Shield visuals and the general role of shields in the game.

At the moment the shields just seem to be useful for protecting you against weapons and collisions to a certain extent.

I'd like to see the role of the shields increased so they can also be used to protect you from radiation (heat now, but others down the line) and show your shields glowing in the direction of impact (solar wind direction relative to you) as they do for weapons impacts.

Stronger shields and shield generator allows you to get closer to white dwarfs, etc for longer without damage but your shield power is sapped over time.

You can get pretty damned close to stars, I think they are protecting you (mind you no shields doens't make any difference AFAIK, so...)

Exactly my point. No shields makes no difference to what you can withstand from stellar radiation/heat which is a missed opportunity I think.

So basicly effects like in X: Rebirth when you get hit? I'd like that.
And maybe some aurora effects when close to the sun... as it is probably a very strong magnetic field :p

But for now that is not a priority...they should get Wings done first :D

Hull too heavy for shield generator?

Seriously?

So I've got a Cobra Mk III and I sold the shield generator I had so I could buy a crappy little 2T cargo bay.

Sounds crazy, but this gave me just enough space to accept a particularly profitable mission.

Next I flew to a location where I could upgrade another cargo bay to something more sensible.

I sold the 2T cargo bay and attempted to replace it with another shield generator.

However despite there being loads of shield generators, my hull is now considered too heavy for all of them

Help? What have I done wrong?

The number part of the class system for modules relates to the optimal and maximum weight of a ship the modules are rated for.

Ie my exploration Adder has lower number reactor, thruster, and shield modules as they are optimised for my lower weight, i don't have rreught, weapons or armour weight to worry about.

Ok I think I've found the answer.

Technically I didn't sell the 2T cargo bay before attempting to but the Shield Generator.

Instead I was trying to do both at the same time. Apparently the system can't handle this.

Anyway now I have actually sold the 2T cargo bay and I have serval shield generators available.

One other question is... which one is it likely came with my Cobra?

Normally one down from what the slot can take max. So I think size 3 maybe, default comes in a size 4 slot no?

[Edit]
Though, fit what you feel is best - I max out my shields on most ships (more shields = less hull to fix)

You did WHAT!!!?????!?!?!?!!!??!?!??!?11111111oneoneeleven

This is literally the most ridiculous ship fitting error ever

Oh I agree entirely. It was literally the only way I could put my cobra over the edge at the particular station I was at.

I now have the mission and have upped my other cargo bay at another station.

Now all I need to do is pick the correct replacement shield generator and I'm good :D

NEVER EVER EVER EVER take the shields off.

Have traded most my entire ED career without Shields and earned -millions- because of it.
Potential repair bills can be kept to a minimum with decent flying skills, and the slot that would normally take up valuable cargospace?

Agree with you that it's -lots- safer having a proper shield, but my experience tell me one can escape 9/10 of interdiction attempts, and a little patience while docking will save you hull damage there as well.

(Imagine how much less you earn per traderun With a shield-generator your size rather than a 64 tonne cargohold)
The earnings far outweigh the risk .....in my experience

I just installed a shield cell bank into my Eagle. I set it to a fire group and tried to use it just outside of station to test it out. It knocked all systems offline. I sat for 5:30 minutes until my oxygen ran out... Is that a bug or are they not supposed to be used with full shields?

Having everything deployed at once might have overtaxed your powerplant.

switch a few systems off, or use the power priorities to keep your deployed power < max available power
