I occasionally bounty hunt with a Class 3 shield in an Asp. It holds up fine against weak AI, especially those that try to run instead of shoot. :) Tried to wipe out an Elite Cobra that had gimbal beams, and that didn't go nearly as well, but the shields actually held up for a fair amount of time. So, they're OK, but worth upgrading at some point.

Yeah, that's the point, they still do protect for day to day running etc, just fine for trading I'd say, just not the best against a decent skilled npc/player or station walls. :)

Please remove shield cells. Game is much better without

PVP battles will be more balanced and no drag fest.
PVE will be totally more balanced since npc is not using them. And anacondas will be feared as should.

Trust me. Game will be much better
 
Nah. Then it becomes even more about Alpha Strike. The planned changes to the SCB's should make it better for everyone.

Then give them to npc's as well. And I like long combat. There's no rule that says it should be quick.

Not everyone is here just for hardcore combat / PvP gaming.

Wow, sorry but the OP has obviously never had anything above a type 6. Asps, pythons, type 9's and Anacondas from what I've played have extremely expensive hulls. I had a rather nasty run in with an Asp, elite the other night that managed to take my type 9 down to 9% hull before I managed to down him. 2 mill creds! I'm now in my anaconda and 3% damage cost me 250k. Shield cells are there for the smart combat pilot. If you want to pvp, then pack them. Don't be suprised if you end up dead if you don't.

They've been balanced, they work as intended.
 
Shield Cells are being tweaked to make them run hotter and also have a longer lead in time meaning to use them effectively will require more skill in timing and awareness. This is a much better solution than removing options from a game that promotes choice.

Best balance is to remove them in my opinion :)

Another thread where the Search the Forum-fu is weak.

I know the other running threads, sorry about that. But I was just struck with total mind convince that game would be much better without and would balance itself :)

Elite isn't about balance.
 
Try fighting more than 2 ships at a time and come back! Try a high intensity combat zone maybe, or several pirates at once attacking on you. Shield cells have their place, they just need proper balance. Like gimbals weapons and chaffs, extremely agile powerful ships or whatever.

As for 'difficulty in PvE', maybe the rank of the NPC should actually matter and encounters should be more difficult depending on the enemy ship combat rank. Right now is a joke, all the combats are exactly the same (regardless if they are harmless or elite).
