How much better is a class 7 shield on the Imperial Clipper?

I'm wondering if it's worth the investment in a class 7 shield.

Kinda related ... but do the larger shields take a lot longer to recharge or is it just me?

I have a B5 shield, B(can't remember - asp sized) generator and A(again asp sized) distributor ... but to get a single ring at 4 pips takes over 5 minutes without popping a shield cell.

They said those shield values were wrong, but they aren't.

If you go pewpew and check the relative strength of each shield the numbers stack - it might be that a clipper has 400 shields and lasers do 5, it might be that thye have 200 and lasers do 10 but in proportion to the other ships the numbers stack in my experience, perfectly.

Thanks ''Derath'', I guessed they were keeping tight lipped over them, I mean I can get more information on area-51 than the workings of their shields at Frontier. I'm sure ''Derath'' has been through most of those shield values in combat anyway chaps. Numbers look good to me anyway, anyone got a link for similar armor values please.?

ahhh the infamous derath, with an estimated 8 million bounty on his head.

Not trying to be offensive but without knowing how the data on that table was gathered or someone from FD backing it as truth it is about as useful as the other table.
That one and the version on the wiki (link below) were calculated according to the figures and method one of the devs discussed with us in a thread.

Edit: Here's the thread if you wanna check our math ;)

That shield table is not correct. I wish people would stop tossing it around as fact.

Look at the shield values:

http://i.imgur.com/omzijnI.png

It has equal or better shields than the Anaconda. All other non-freighter big ships are tiny in comparison - the nearest being the Clipper with shields just over half the value of the Python shields. The Clipper is also close in basic price to the Python; closer than either are to the Anaconda, but the firepower of the Python is more.

The Clipper is the ship that most favourably compares with the Python in that size category.

On top of these tanky shields, the Python is no slouch in turning. Imagine a Cobra (in terms of movement) that is more than four times as tough, with three times the firepower.

If it is 'medium', it should lose most of the shields and large hardpoints.
Just so you know that table isn't really correct at all.

Even without the dev quote, the table can be tested to be false. It's wrong. Please stop using it.

That chart is saying almost exactly the same thing as the other table, as far as relative shield strengths, but the other table is closer to the few in-game figures given.

Even without the dev quote, the table can be tested to be false. It's wrong. Please stop using it.

Is it giving even a vaguely accurate impression of the relative differences between ships and different shield modules on the same ship?

Thats not the same table.

They both provide figures that are very similar in relative terms.

Here's my table:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Xq2fmxhjfNiwtR2fBR1MAZrwEcjFudSuSjTOLwfcqlM/pubhtml

Not claiming it's completely accurate but it's based on Mike Evan's comments on shield strength:

If your hull mass is equal to the shield's optimal mass, the C-rated variant of that shield will have exactly the same shield strength as listed in game.

If your hull mass is half of the shield's optimal mass, your shield strength is 150% (of the listed number).

If your hull mass is 2.5x the shield's optimal mass, your shield strength is 50%.

Anything in between is a linearly interpolated value.

Lower/higher ratings give a 10% bonus/penalty per rating level (this part Mike didn't mention, but it fits data from testing).
