The Single Player/Offline Discussion Thread

This should be a mod, when Frontier eventually allow mods, that is. And the game should check for this and if you try to run the mod in anything other than offline mode, disable it.

im sure i read that there was an offline mode, similar to solo but the universe only changes based on your actions, but once you reconnect it updates all systems to current online stats
This way is good for 3 reasons i can think of , first if you lose net connection for any reason you can still play and second if you have limited upload/download amount you could exceed it so going offline can save you from that and third if you have a bad connection/ ping rate you can go offline once updated so not to suffer lag
solo , which is online, and offline are essentially the same just with different potential benefits and we all get to play no matter what

This will also be my situation, living in South Africa and with the servers in England/Europe. Is there more/updated information concerning this?

According to http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Elite:_Dangerous_FAQ
No, it will be possible to have a single player game without connecting to the galaxy server. You won't get the developer injected events and you probably won't be able to sync between server and non-server (again they'll investigate).

Has/is it being investigated?

If you want to do single player - do online single player

I know it's way too early to discuss this but those for various reasons want to do single player, I welcome to do that with online mode.

Benefits are numerous:
#1 You will be able to switch between online modes - so if you want to have fun with friends, you will be able to do that. Or if you feel lucky and there's some big event going on, switch to 'all';
#2 If none of above interests you, consider you will see all big changes in PU. You don't have to sacrifice anything to see galaxy evolving around you. It will require network connection, but it will be much less taxing playing with other players. In vice versa, your changes, your trades, your skills in combat against NPCs will also give input to changes in universe;

I know there's lot of good things with SP offline too (like if you are very careful about your security, can play on plane/ship/whatever offline site), but I wanted to get this out, as it seems lot of people miss this information.

Have fun out there!

Latency and unreliable connections will keep some players like myself playing primarily offline although I'll have an online account which I will most likely play single player only just to see what's going on from time to time.

With purely offline there should be the opportunity for mods as well which will mitigate anything lost from the online experience.

Latency and unreliable connections won't be a problem for single player online in my opinion. Server could do a very long ping for that mode, and I believe that's how it will be designed.

Also offline will get same updates as multiplayer (in terms of expansion material, new surprises in galaxy, etc), and I think FD have said they will try to minimize differences, so experience could be somewhat similar.

If you can surf the web and check your email single player online will work just fine. :)

I concur, take care and Elite!

Latency and unreliable connections won't be a problem for single player online in my opinion.

As you say, the latency is bearable when no other players are about. At my place the connection is usually pretty stable, but at my girlfriend's place where I'm usually on the weekends (and where I keep my HOTAS and pedals setup) the connection can drop once every 30 minutes, sometimes more often. At other times it can be fine for hours.

Does anyone know how offline single player will work?

Will it be fully offline - meaning no need to log in and authenticate, thus allowing people to play when they have no Internet connection?

Fully offline has been promised to be supported with only a once off authentication required when you install the game. Check the latest newsletter - you can see the menu where single player is actually implemented on an internal build of the game. The demos at E3 were apparently run in offline mode as well.

So single player ED already exists, we just need to wait for Frontier to make it available to us.

Just to reiterate some of the points here.

There is definitely an offline mode do not fear. This was cleared extremely early on during the KS as I was a major proponent of this feature :)

You can however also be SP but online so you will never see any human players but you can experience all the richness of the online universe.

So you have MP of course with several options but you also have SP online as I described above and of course SP offline.

Remember though you can't jump from online to offline to online though to my understanding as this would cause problems.

Hopefully there are multiple "save" points so you can experiment. :)

Some people such as myself prefer the old style of SP offline and this is possible. It is also on the FAQ's on the Elite Dangerous Kickstarter campaign that you can find here :) https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous

Do you know if they can be moved between single online and multiplayer online?

Look up!

Yes...the install hit after bedtime in Sydney Oystralia and then I had to go to work...so I have been on offline mode for the last 18 hours.....I see the offline mode as reading the forums, trying to discern truth from rant to best inform my new shiny cobra's config and wether I should bother hauling or killing never dying npc's....

...sooooo looking forward to getting home....need to send the family out somewhere though...

Single Player

I noticed today that we can download the single player version for the standard beta.

When the standard beta starts at the end of this month, will single player still be available to play or are we forced to play multi player only?

Almost 100% sure you'll get both. I'm a premium beta person and we got access to the single player shortly before we got access to multiplayer and we can still choose to go play the single player scenarios. I assume it will be the same for beta backers and I assume it's the same for Alpha backers.
