The Single Player/Offline Discussion Thread

I think there's supposed to be a mode where you connect only once initially, and then that's it.

Of course, you'll never get any updates.

From my understanding the "Solo" mode will be the same as Multiplayer but no other "real" players will appear.

Missions and trade prices etc will still be via a server that everyone will access.

Ie if you play Solo and I play multiplayer and we are both at Sol at the same instant in time we will both see the same trade prices

I dont think there will be an offline mode as such just a Solo and Multiplayer - sure someone will correct me if wrong

im sure i read that there was an offline mode, similar to solo but the universe only changes based on your actions, but once you reconnect it updates all systems to current online stats
This way is good for 3 reasons i can think of , first if you lose net connection for any reason you can still play and second if you have limited upload/download amount you could exceed it so going offline can save you from that and third if you have a bad connection/ ping rate you can go offline once updated so not to suffer lag
solo , which is online, and offline are essentially the same just with different potential benefits and we all get to play no matter what

I think the offline mode made you connect once to register and then that was it, you never had to connect again unless you wanted to. That said surely you would want to download patches etc anyway even if you don't want to play online?

The single player online doesn't make any sense to me if the market is linked to the multiplayer market.. what if someone/group crashes a system economy or hacks it... while you are in single player mode... will it filter down to single player version?

I can understand connecting to update the game with expansions but not much else...

If you are playing single player online then yes. Your game world will be updated accordingly. Same goes for injected events, news, missions and other types of meta data. Basically, every other online player in the world will become a very advanced "AI" for you that helps simulate the world and make it feel alive. You will also induce change to the online world in the same way as everyone else. The only difference is that you simply won't meet any other players.

If you play single player offline then you and only you will induce change to the world, but as a result it will be a lot more static. You will never be able to bring this character into the online world either due to the worlds being out if sync.

There will be a full multiplayer. Online single player where player actions effect the galaxy and economy in the background (but you never actually see other players). Then full offline mode.

But even while fully online you can choose to only play with friends etc.

As far I understand it, the game modes work like this:

1 - Single-player offline
You connect once to register, and after this, do not need to connect to FDs servers, although you may want to connect occasionally to pull down patches (bug fixes, minor updates, etc).
You play the game in a relatively static galaxy, with no injected events from FD, although the galaxy may evolve along PG lines.

2 - Single-player online
You play in the same evolving galaxy as multi-player, but will never encounter another human commander (NPCs only). You see the same injected events, and markets/political systems change according to the aggregated behaviour of other players.

3 - Multi-player online
The same as 2, except you may now encounter other human players as well as NPCs.
Multi-player online can also be sub-divided into private groups (in addition to the default 'All Players' group). If you're in a private group, you can only encounter other human players that are in the same private group.

Characters cannot be moved between offline and online - they stay in the mode in which they originated.

so far the "offline mode" seems like a solo which i still need to connect to the official server

There is one better one. Please turn off your PC and fold a piece of paper to an elite spaceship design and pretend you are the Elite of the Elite.

Have fun!

I wouldn't want to be online... I hate online gaming and i'm just going through Alpha and Beta to test, support the game being made and not interact with other commanders... Offline is the only way I want to play this game... online has no appeal to me... I don't seek or see a challenge in other players... they ruin the game for me...

Having discovered that playing Elite is NOT like riding a bike, and my initial efforts blundering around crashing into things, I sympathise with this view: at least in single player AI wont snigger at my incompetence, just kill me.

On his Twitch stream, Kerrash described how at E3, they were using a version of the server that ran on the local PC, like having your own personal server. He seemed to be under the impression that this is how single player offline mode will work. I can see how this approach would simplify the main client program.

Anyway, eventually there will be single player online and single player offline modes, as well as the ability to play online with just your friends. But not yet.

On full release we should have three main options, multiplayer online, single player online and single player offline. The difference between the online and offline options are the requirement of an internet connection and whether you play with the same background situation as other people.

There are also various grouping options with multiplayer that we haven't seen in game yet. You will be able to play multiplayer either with the 'all' group or in private groups with a selected group of friends.
