The Star Citizen Thread V2.0

I've just finished 4 days at EGX as an E:D Ambassador. During that time I spoke to numerous SC backers (some of these conversations took place in a pub at the end of the day).

I have to say that it was very nice talking to all of them, and in every single case I found them very nice people, perfectly reasonable and fully understanding that it's early days for SC and that some things could do with improvement (in their opinions).

None of them were blind fanboys, and they all had respect for E:D.

So I think that either people say one thing online, and another face-to-face, or (what I think is more likely), this so-called massive hate between E:D and SC backers is completely overblown and totally untrue.

Small, rabid subsets of each group, like religious fundamentalists.

As with most things I think its a minority and many of that minority are heavily invested in SC.

It reminds me of a poker game. You have cards in your hand and sometimes the blinkers go on and you are convinced that no matter how poor your hand looks this is the hand to go all in on when it would be probably better to fold and use some chips on the next hand.

If you equate the cards you get dealt initially to what you can currently physically experience of a game and the possible cards you might draw as your perceived vision for the game.

At the moment and it might very well change, because of where we are in the development cycles an ED player has been dealt a better hand than the SC player. Go back to December 2012 and it was completely the opposite.

Well SQ 42 will be rolling out mid 2015/Early 2016. But yeah the PU probably wont be out until end of 2016 as a full game. They plan on having the PU alpha at start/mid 2015.

They planned on having the Arena Commander alpha 1.0 out last December and almost 10 months later they've still not achieved that. So forgive me if I'm a little dubious about CIGs release schedule.

It's the vocal minority that's so vocal, they make impression it's the majority.

I kinda think that "vocal minorities" feed off each other...sort of like the sum of the voices is less than the whole noise..if that makes sense.

I'd like to think the ED community is more...relaxed...but it isn't exactly easy to state anything like that definitively...and certainly not without annoying some people!

Simple fact is that when you have alot of people who have invested serious amounts of money (in computer game terms anyway) then you're going to get strong opinions as a consequence.

I think STar Citizen shouldnt be ashamed to admit that its meant to played with a M+K... that way all the Joystick users wouldnt try level the devices.

Or CIG could use the same Input Method Elite is using.. but I doubt they will do that. The Mouse control is just like the old freelancer - and isnt freelancer ther closest to Star Citizen?

I hope the gamers finally accept mouse play. Its not that bad. I mean I use my JS in Elite - but iN SC I use my mouse.

Oh good, if CIG doesn't like it then they can give us back our $55,000,000 and go find a publisher instead - or better yet, let the mouse commanders fund the game. Back when they needed money Star Citizen was going to be a Space Sim and spiritual successor for Wing Commander, not Freelancer 2.

This isn't about accepting mouse play, it's about not having it be in the state it currently is in the first place. CIG specifically said that it WOULD NOT be like Freelancer with point and click mouse controls. In my country, when you pull off a bait and switch it's called FRAUD.

Exactly. Ben said that.
Looking forward to seeing what comes out of this.

I agree. It's not a shame at all.

However it will conflict with the whole "Best Space Sim Ever blah blah" and them trying to please everyone and their dog... so I doubt they'll suddenly change their methods.

I can't see them making any radical changes now - they survived the original forum onslaught of mouse complaints.

At the moment they have happy M/KB players and unhappy hotas - can't see them going out of their way to make M/KB players unhappy too...

I'm still in a state of shock that they're selling ships for $350 which haven't even been created yet...

...and people are buying them

Guys, I need your honest opinions:
I was thinking about actually jumping into SC universe at some point - buy a cheap ship and access to arena commander. But after reading forums and looking at the opinions and videos from the actual arena commander module I have second thoughts.
First, I dont get the whole hype around the damn game. Arena commander looks arkadish as hell and apparently plays better with k+m, not HOTAS (yes I do know that its pre pre alpha...). And apart from the great promises we don have anything that represents the actual gameplay so far.
So what is the deal? I would love to hear some opinions from actual star citizen pilots if this project is really worth supporting.
ps - i don't want to ask this on SC forums because from what I saw most of people there are very aggressive fanboys of the projects.

I would hold onto your money for now. Or you may be end up like the rest of us that have already backed it - Bitter at the meagre results so far :(
