The Star Citizen Thread v5

Major issue is that SC wants to be "everything", and Andromeda will have space buggy and walking action like in Mass Effect 1, so comparisons aren't fully unjustified, but still...incredibly different games :D
Yeah, the point is more that, as soon as the “no competition” claim is made, you're already falling into a vortex of infinite scotsman regress. It has plenty of competition, but the one who makes the claim will almost always add on more and more conditionals to try to disqualify the very obvious candidates, to the point where, if you let it run for long enough, you inevitably end up with “…but SC has no competition in the genre of being a Star Citizen game currently being developed(?) by Chris Roberts” or some similar vacuous truth. :D

Wouldn't it attract the same sort of demographic as those who will be interested in SQ42?

Good question. I think RPGs in general have wider appeal than space shooter campaigns. However as we know absolutely zero about SQ42...I guess if you remove RPG part it is very similar to Mass Effect.

Believe in the dream!

Disbelieve in what any other nobody might type out on the internet!

Follow the dream!

Follow your own instincts and be a part of the greatest gaming experience that will ever be!

Buy into the dream!

Don't buy into anything that isn't part of the SC dream!

Preserve the dream!

Dislike anything that isn't part of the SC dream!

Respect the dream!

Worship everything and anything related to the dream. Consider all undreamlike things to be heretical apostates.

Further the dream!

Buy a Polaris!

Even if nothing gets released in 5 or 6 years, or ever - it'll still be worth it - we will have journeyed with the dream :D and been part of the mind of Roberts!

Can we stop saying Mass Effect is space sim? It is space opera RPG. Story driven content, from best AAA story RPG developers.

Yes, but in terms of "I like space, so which game do I put my money down for?" it is still competition. It's like comparing the Culture series to The Expanse: Wildly different approaches, but they both scratch that sci-fi itch...

SC theme song? Well, if we're going down that route...

No no no, they lost that title long time ago. CDPR is miles ahead. :)

I'd have to say CiG/RSI has been the best damn space opera I've ever witnessed in a long long time, you seriously can't make this stuff up, it's been totally enthralling.
Thank you Chris, keep on trying to get up that great big hill of hope for your destination.

Totally agree. CDPR blows away all those big name rpg devs and driven the quality bar through the roof for story.

If SC got those guys to write the story I might even consider buying in again....Might.

I think, I have got worth content for my money (80 $ "investment" back in 2013) and this space opera is not over yet..my prediction is for tragic ending for now.. ;)
Maybe I even will try to play game (tech demo) again, too...but for now I will better watch videos how other people are trying to play the game (tech demo)...and some fun and controversial video on youtube...

Procedural planet with detailed handcrafted parts added.

Well we have the same thing in ED (engineer bases, crashed ships which by the way blend quite poorly into the terrain in many cases, now fumaroles and geysers...), yet I don't hear people complaining about it.

I hereby officially complain about the poor blending of nonnatural structures (bases, debris, ...) into PG terrain in Elite. Engineer bases are mostly fine as far as i am aware (one visited a few). I think the poor blessing is mainly an issue of the rudimentary lightning engine.

What surprised me was the amount of details popping up so close to the camera... Even the ground heightmap was adjusted so close to the view point to the point of being really irritating.

I don't remember seeing that kind of thigns with the last iteration of Horizon.

Considering it is all PG and authored, it can be improved down the road. But it is mostly OK-ish. I wouldn't complain about improvements though.

If you watch the CitCon video, then I don't see anything in the demo that doesn't look like potential footage from ME:A (except the camera angle).

Given that they're using Frostbite, it's not inconceivable that they also have space flight/combat/trading (with awful PC controls).

When it releases it may be more of a 'space sim' than SC or SQ42 o_O.

I think it was stupid rule of cool or something interfering with common sense - if they would move that fly in much slower and build up with music, there would be less sudden pop in. As many on SA forums pointed out this simply can't be something they were ready to show at CitizenCon.

I also don't think it's a deal breaker, but the looks of structures when approached from orbit are very unnatural. It really looks like first-second generation 3D games: flat surface of uniform color and almost no structure (from the distance!, i.e. LOD settings are harsh) and on top of that a couple uniform dark polygons. It gets better close, but still something is missing for it to look real. But yeah, i'm sure FD are aware and at some point it will get better.

Can you imagine the crowds reaction if they had something like this to show at Citizencon 2016?

I'll honestly admit this:
When I first saw that I was ALMOST to bite the bullet and pay up some cash.

In hindsight it drives me literally up the wall the way the whole thing was handled.
Look- they could have honeslt yhandled this is small pieces, release a first limited version (Squadron 42), banked on that and keep on building all the vision Chroberts wanted along they years.

It could have worked. It could have been a contender... Damn his eyes. Damn. Damn forever, it COULD have worked! D:<
