The Star Citizen Thread v5

That letter made me lose a lot of respect for Chris Roberts when it came out, mainly for two reasons;
• A CEO of a company writes like the average internet rant'er.
• The letter was directed at the Escapist, but somehow manages to mention Derek Smart 23 times. (Try a CTRL+F for "Derek")
The letter (TL;RA) introduced me to Derek Smart and his refund story. Few days later after doing some research I got my refund request in a and dozen of weeks later I had my money back. Also without this I would never have found out about the hilarious SC thread on SomethingAwful, because I didn't know about goons involvement.

So yes, CR mentioning DS 23 times was a good thing. :D

^^^^ well that explain things^^^^

Video from LevelCap (well, his brother) on the latest update

https://youtu.be/WF2RAvzm_2Y

what the hell is this video?

Thats some active shilling and false advertising. Theres no new play styles for these ships because theres no mechanics in place. Theres no refueling in place yet the guy keeps talking like ship to ship refueling is already there. There is no to almost everything he says in that video. Its all hopes and dreams still. How can you market something when you dont even know what the product your marketing is. Seriously what in world is this guy on.
2.4 could be summed up in 3 sentences in that video and persistence, shopping and starfarer gemini.
Rest of time he spends talking from his ass on what he thinks game will be in future. theres approximately over 100 future pronouns used in that video thats 1 every 3rd sentence

Do point me if i missed anything he said about 2.4. But that videos is really load of Bull

Ah Levelcap. Yeah he's nice and balanced alright, here's some video titles to show how balanced he is:

"STAR CITIZEN's STARFARER IS THE LARGEST SHIP EVER RELEASED"
"STAR CITIZEN IS TOO EPIC! UPDATES AND UPCOMING FPS MODULE" (yes the canceled one btw)
"STAR CITIZEN - LARGEST CROWD FUNDED PROJECT IN HISTORY" (video released 1 year ago)
"STAR CITIZEN - SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY"
"STAR CITIZEN ARENA COMMANDER 1.0 LOOKS AWESOME"
"STAR CITIZEN THE ULTIMATE SPACE SIM!" (Hangar "gameplay" only)

His other stuff is pretty terrible too. For example, he complained a lot about Planetside 2, which would be fine if the things he complained about had any meaning. His main thrust was that one vehicle is more powerful than a single foot soldier, and thus PS2 was imbalanced. Well damn, of course a tank can take more hits than a soldier. He also complained that players use vehicles to farm infantry. And moments after he complained about this, he actually filmed himself farming infantry - though it did not look like he was trying to make a point, in fact he often did this himself. None of his points actually had any meaningful thrust for a better planetside, it was all just drivel about how the skilled players don't have cooler guns and whatnot. He never had the reflective capabilities of the likes of Wrel, who made and makes excellent videos on the subject AND now works at Daybreak games.

TLDR; he's been gushing about Star Citizen without fail, and has become part of the hype machine in a way that isn't healthy for any game. Most of the stuff he was rambling about has either been cut already, or is just very unlikely to ever see the light of day. As others stated before, he talks about features as if they're already in the game. If you take a look at some of his older videos from 1 to 2 years ago, he was utterly convinced that everything he talks about is sure to be ready by early 2016. Well that hasn't worked out, has it?

In a way his videos are a bit like David Braben's early Kickstarter videos, where DBOBE talks about what he would like to do with Elite. Except Levelcap states, with complete and utter conviction, that SC *will* have all that, and more. He's a feather in the wind, blown this way or that way by the smallest gusts.

Major Tom is regularly putting out new vids. I wonder if he needs a subscription model to sustain that ? :p

One of my first post in SC forum.
It was early when I had just signed up giving $ 30.00 for the minimum package. It was the time: '' you can do that guys. ''

If I had to write once on this forum, it would be this letter.

Congratulations CIG! I hope now you have enough resources to finish this game, my 20 years old dream game to say so.

O.K., for me, I have no more request to improve this game.
Oups! No sorry, one last thing: opportunity to walk in normal speed in the hangar and the possibility to close my doors when I'am inside of my ship ! :)
In truth, for me, the yard is already full. From the beginning, so many questions asking by Star Citizens, and so many goals to achieve!
Now it's time to take a break and allow time for programmers do their job!
There are still so many lines of code to write and so many thousands of drawings to make and so many of hundreds of thousands of millions polygons to assembling! All this to satisfy the players and Chris Roberts visions. But that's fine for me.

Also thanks to CIG for giving us informations about this game and start the monthly reports!

Fortunately, we don't have to wait years before to play this game. The game will be released by patches, modules and chapters. Just for that RSI,it's

wonderful. Thank you again.

So everything is perfect. Just months before Squadron 42 first chapters release, i will begining to play enough with the DFM by the mid-april!
So , all is in place.

It only remains for me to say a prayer at least for the next five years :

Please,
To economists of this world, work hard to stabilize the economy.
To politicians , please work very very hard to establish peace and harmony.
For Mother Nature: please stay calm.
Amen,

Thus, CIG can finally finish this game and and allow players to play Star Citizens for many years.

Peace and love until dogfight.

Good luck.

Best regards.

Here, my illusions about SC seriously beginning to disappear.
I had no need to wait CS to play a good SPACE SIMULATOR.

Courage and do not despair.

I can wait another three years, four if necessary. A clean version, of course, without bugs.
It's long time to wait. But so what.

BTW, I would must admit, and I think everyone knows this, SC enter in a very critical period of time.
In 8 months, we'll see if Cloud is in the right direction or not.

Everything is still to prove here. Like Crytech engine is really the good one for Star Citizen?
The software will work correctly, even with all the changes they need to do to ?
This game is too complicated to make in a relative good period of time?
The space will be big like they said ? Mmmmm. i want to see it before to believe it.
Does CI hide to us serious programming problems? I really don't know. And I hope not.

Frankly in truth, for me, nothing is really done yet. And that's why I prefer to know as little as possible about this game. Although I visit this website every day since the beginning.

CIG , really good luck for the next months. And If i may, you don't have to talk to much anymore.
There are a lot of things that have already been (promised ) to the backers.
So please just work to finish this damned game.

Anyway, I expect you in the corner next january.

Thank you.

P.S. Meanwhile, to help me (or you OP ? ) waiting - and now it's very, very more easy - I play Elite Dangerous each day ... and relaxing between stars, a lot of stars to say the least. Enough to get dizzy. Big time.

For 2 years now, I look from afar development SC. I expect myself to anything until 4 years. If he is able to complete the game to make it playable. What seems hard to believe now.

Fly safe Commanders.

the huge neverending influx of cash never felt right to me, atleast not the last year or so.
wouldnt surprise me, to make it appear larger than it is. "to big to fail" etc, resulting in higher confidence and more real money.
to citizens this is ofcourse just an absurd and impossible conspiracy theory, as always.

For asking the entirely innocent question of when he/she can get to fly one of the really big ships they pledged for, this RSI forum member, and obviously a backer of Star Citizen, gets effectively banned from the forums for 10 years... For asking that question....

What is going on there at CIG?!?!

I doubt it was for asking that question, but who knows with CIG. If you have any contact with that backer you can ask him as there should be a note in red on his login page explaining (albeit badly) which comment was deemed so offensive. I wonder which of The slimy RSI moderators did it. My money is on DarthMaul or Whitemagic. Toast is often pretty reasonable.

You clearly don't understand propaganda development, by probating a subscriber for asking a perfectly innocent question they prove they are not totally desperate for money.

It's that or that the projects so far off the rails that any criticism real or imagined terrifies them to the point where they probated him without noticing he's a subscriber.

That is typical CIG and star citizen, they don't like customers, only when they give them money. Unfortunately with the new ToS CIG can pretty much do what they like.
Forum dictatorship comes to ones mind.

I would just end the subscription, at least you can do that.

TLDR
[3:42] Q: Drake ships do not have ejection seats, how does this square with the perma-death concepts envisioned in ‘Death of a Spaceman’?
A: Drake ships are a little like Russian military hardware: rugged, functional but doesn't necessarily have all the extras (like ejection seats) in order to offer better value elsewhere (like bigger guns). While an ejection seat might allow you to potentially escape, "Death of a Spaceman" means that even if you are blown up with your ship you are instantly dead: you wake up in a med bay after being patched up. However you can only do this a number of times before you old character passes away and you have to move on to a new one. So Drake ships are more risky but if you are aware of that you should still be able to get out and EVA away.

[7:12] Q: Will there be an event planned for Gamescon?
A: Due to venue issues we won't be doing the same “Big presentation” like we’ve done in the past couple years, but instead we’ll have a booth on the show floor showing off new stuff coming up for the game and having a playable build of the current release as well as having pop up events, like the big garden event we’ve done the last couple years where it’s meet and greet for the fans with developers and such.

[9:30] Q: Will you receive a notification if you are away from your locked ship and a pirate is trying to disable the lock and loot your ship?
A: One of the next stages is to put in security systems which partly come with item 2.0 stuff. With that is other levels of boarding mechanics to hack or blow open a door, all in the stages of getting fleshed out and then get implemented. This would also involve notification to your Mobiglass within a reasonable amount of distance if you were, say EVAing somewhere else.

[17:48]Q: Anything from the E3 expo that really amazed you? What do you think of how big space games are now?
A: Everyone seems to be doing space games now all the way up to mainstream titles like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Cool stuff with Mass Effect and Battlefield One. Star Citizen FPS stuff in the works that we’ll see in the not too distant future.

[19:22] Q: Nyx still in the works? When will we see it?
A: Yes! The landing area and environment is done, but we’re in the process now of integrating it into the huge star system and how it works with planetary tech. You should see it around 2.7 and ArcCorp won't be in 2.7, but it won't be long for that so you won't see loading screens anymore when visiting Nyx and ArcCorp in the future and we’ll continue to build upon that from that. We’re working on having all that come together by the end of this year.

[21:15] Q: Will AI opponents have any aspect of self preservation?
A: Big AI technical session in Frankfurt recently and they’re in the implementation stage of the grand design. Going to unify AI and mission stuff into one system that has different levels and scopes and knows how to talk amongst itself, which will in turn allow things like self preservation and a more seemingly intelligent AI.

[23:30] Q: Will you eventually pass along the knowledge you gained where CryEngine is concerned from SC’s development?
A: Absolutely. I believe it’s important to share the knowledge that we’ve learned in order to help the industry evolve and advance like it has in the past from other people sharing what they’ve learned.

[25:30] Q: Will Hangar Module and Universe Module be combined for better immersion? Ex: Walking from your hangar into a space port and requisitioning a ship.
A: Yes, 100%. For him the goal is to get the game to a point where you’re not going to the Hangar Module or ArcCorp as separate modules, it’ll all be one. Setup may be slightly different than right now.

[26:58] Q: Planned role for Vanduul harvesters now that planetary landings are in game possibility.
A: We’ll definitely have them planned to appear when the systems that Vanduul occupy or threaten come into the bigger Star Citizen universe and the potential that the procedural tech gives us is unparalleled compared to what we had originally planned a couple years back. It’ll be very exciting the various scenarios you’ll encounter down the road.

It gives information at least, but not the one that most people would like to hear (I don't talk about fanatics). No major mechanic until end of the year.

If the money is right but not the source it means someone else is funding it the black op way? or I don't exactly understand the wording??

Or they've taken a large bank loan/government grant and are using it to trickle charge the tracker. I've been curious for a while since many of the guys in my org were simply melting, and it seemed that a lot of people in the concierge forum were doing the same. Sure there'd still be some new money coming in, but not the levels they've shown.

Did we know what will be inside 2.5 and 2.6 because now we know that Nyx will (probably) be in 2.7. I am starting to find their roadmap very difficult to follow. But as always with SC, assets first, the rest will (eventually) follow.

This project is, to put it mildly, in a whole heap of trouble.

*Edit*

Said that through gritted teeth, and I suspect with no small amount of sweat trailing down his face as the realization of what was revealed at E3 by the Big Guns doing space games too, when compared to where Star Citizen currently is, started to sink in.

Also, this 10ftC basically admitted that Gamescon is going to be another low-key event showing nothing new. Whilst it's almost certain that Activision will be there with CoD: IW and the whole 9 yards too, with perhaps another sneak peek from Bioware of Mass Effect: Andromeda as well.

Wow...
