My first impression was - how can STORY and ACTING be worst than WCIII/WCIV? I mean WCIV is light years away from what WC movie is.

I've never played Wing Commander. I do remember watching somebody play it in a local computer shop in the early 1990s, but I did not have the money to buy a PC back then, it was only a few years later that I got my own PC, and by then X-Wing had been released, so I spent what little money I had on that, and a soundcard and joystick.

Cheers Ian - You've saved me from watching the whole thing - But I still loved it!

The best thing that I can say about this movie is it's not quite as bad a Battlefield Earth...

I would rather play the hangar module, in VR with a HOTAS, non-stop for a month - than watch that, that, steaming pile again.

Just finished watching that Spoony guy's review.
It's...I'm speechless. That sonar thing was the APEX of retardation that I haven't seen in a long time.
And now, this B-movie director is making an AAA (cost-wise) game.
I'm now sure that SC will be, when finished (IF), a big pile of u-know-what.
Worn out, cheap, cheesy jokes, unoriginal story, characters, ships...practically everything.
People really should watch Wing Commander movie, then they'll understand SC development much clearer :D

I'm still pretty sore about the WC movie. I thought a proper director could have gotten something really swashbuckly fun out of it in the Guardians of the Galaxy vein I guess - wisecracks and knowing cheese galore. Sure they could have done a decent old-school kilrathi with animatronics and a fur coated muscle suit - all doable in films of the time just fine, but no. Nonsense, just garbage. Only stands up ok as a geek drinking game for each time a line makes you groan or they do stupid stuff like stay quiet so scanners can't hear them.

oh there you go! only 4 mins in he's on point so far!

You'd need several bottles of whisky, and geeks with very strong livers.

I've just watched the clip by Obsidian Ant on SC. He seems to enjoy it, saying the fight model is much better now. Then he goes into combat and to my eyes it seems like the same old thing, ships are moving strange and he's mostly standing there shooting and turning.

I'm really trusting the guy and I watch his ED videos so I'm kind of confused. I guess I will have to try again for myself.

Every time the Wing Commander movie is mentioned on this forum I feel compelled to mention that the guy who rearranged this (Jamie Treacher) is also this guy:

..who can occasionally be found on this forum.

So technically, and the way I like to look at it, in that movie the Kilrathi were able to sneak in and pinch that navigational macguffin plot device and put the entire human race at risk entirely due to the incompetence of an Elite fan dozing on the job.

Chris Roberts approach to make business, games and movies is pretty much like this:

He really did. He had a fully functioning physics model, coded from his very hands, four years ago.

As someone that was taking Physics at Manchester University before I dropped out to make games full time I can assure everyone that the physics model is COMPLETELY accurate and it’s a full rigid body simulation. I know because I wrote the code.
Amazing since development hasn't even started yet!

Richard Garriott explains zero-g movement to confused physics expert Chris Roberts :

I love that quote, especially when juxtaposed with the video. It becomes very obvious that he doesn't even understand how momentum works, and refuses to accept what someone who has actually been in space is telling him about some of the physics that comes with being in space. This explains a whole lot about his claims about himself. I wonder how much of that has rubbed off on other parts of the family…

Didn't he say in one of the recent interviews or shows or whatever that he had "a background in art"? Maybe he was referring to drawings his mum put on their fridge.

ETA: Yes, it was in the first Kotaku article:
His background in art is probably about on the same level as his background in physics (ie. on lower-than-secondary school levels.) Now, with that in mind, remember that he usually made comment about how the camera should work based on “being a cinematographer”… [hehe]

Thats it. Doesn't look any better to me and zero order controls are still there but whatever. Nothing wrong with people liking it, Star Conflict is quite popular.
