Why do you insist on ignoring the fact that top many being able to walk is intrinsically fun and immersive? You may disagree, but the core value of space legs is having legs.

Sure, I've seen both Strange Days and Avatar, but you have to remember what happened to the guys who thought so in those films: one got his brain cooked, and the other got turned into a Smurf. Having fun with legs obviously has a bad history. :D

This thread is a mess, to be honest. we don't allow "trolling, insulting, and/or badgering posts directed to fellow forum users", even if they are talking utter bullocks, but we do allow mud-slinging against anyone else even if it's not backed up with any facts. It's moderated perfectly fairly within the rules, and the rules are perfectly fair, but somehow, it's a cess-pit. People like Henkka who just want to tell us how much they enjoy SC get lost in the noise of the pie-fight, and that's not right. And when Ben (and me) try to explain real stuff that is real, we get drowned out by *cough* and that's not right, either...

Still, it's a no-holds-barred deathmatch. Kind of fun, and I don't have to be here. :)

PMSL...

Ya the problem with the conversation with Ben was that he didn't understand what the topic was. See we were talking about switching engines to LY, while he was talking about switching the Logo to LY. Of course switching the Logo is easy, the sad fact that it took CIG 2 days to do it is just par for the course. See we assumed that when CR told everyone that the switch had happened and it took no effort he was talking about actually doing the work and switching the engines, not the logo. Can you really say you switched engines if you are not even using the code?

That sounds a bit too semantical to be honest. They're using Amazon's version of CE regardless of whether they've started merging in LY commits.

"And after all, no one is forcing you to use it!"

In this case, yes. If someone wants to walk around his hangar, or walk in his ship from the cockpit to the SRV, that doesnt influence you at all. Heck, those dirty 'immersion people' actually will progress slower than you do! But I guess around here every feature must be awesome for everyone, or people will complain. Got forbid someone else has a bit of fun... ;)

Sidenote: around this time of year many people make NY resolutions. You know, stop smoking, become a vegetarian, hit the gym. These 'newborn' people are often the most unreasonable, annoying and irritating people at parties. Where they used to be decent people before, now they go around like a bunch of lifestyle-Gestapo agents.

Sometimes people who invested heavily in Star Citizen and then ask a refund are very much like it...

But they are not. 3.7 is the same for both, there is no LY 3.7, it is just that the licence for LY lets you use old CE code, code that CIG already had and was using. LY does not actually start until 3.8.

Sorry but no switch has happened, CIG just changed the logo, and moved to Amazons servers. Ben confirmed that no engine switch has happened, just a licence switch.

Ah I see, so personal attacks on others, that is ok. Nice NY resolution you have there. I also find it interesting when a poster has to resort to personal attacks, it always stems from a lack of an argument.

Yeah, I don't quite see the place for walking around in ED. Sure, it might be nice to stretch your legs while cruising to Hutton Orbital, but that relies on there actually being something worth-while to do but which also isn't obligatory. And since ED is something of a killer app for VR, you can't really make it too movement-based, at which point you have to question the use of having it at all.

It is obvious that space legs WILL arrive in ED. It is also ovious that FD will be very cautious to introduce them because of a) solid gameplay which requires quite amount of development b) VR issues (which might require some FD 'magic' because they seem to know their way around new technologies);

Actually nothing says that FD have to implement space legs, they very well could find out that it kills the game in some way. By making VR useless or by taking so much development time and the rest of the game rots, like what happened with EVE online.

While I can see why people want space legs, I don't see the point. It will be way too much work in order to implement in such a way as to not be a throw away. You are basically making another game on top of the current one, while those resources are not going toward improving the current game.

Welp, it looks like certain doctor has screencapped my summary of the Lumberyard argument. I don't want to be famous :( At least not among the group of people that frequent his twitter.

Ok, you're saying that if they are using 3.7 from Amazon (which doesn't yet include any LY commits) then it's no different to using 3.7 from CryTek (what is what CIG were originally using) and therefore, apart some header changes, licenses etc no other work as actually been done. All sounds a bit smoke and mirrors with the 2 engineers 1 day for an engine switch that isn't really an engine switch at all...

Interesting.

Not they have to, but they want to, and it makes perfect business sense. Fact it might be issue for VR doesn't really change much - ED isn't VR exclusive title, and people choose to play game their own way.

So no worries - or do worry if you oppose space legs - they will arrive at ED at some point. Question is when.

That is what Ben has said has happened. We all thought that when CR said it was an engine switch they actually switched engines, but CIG just switched Licences. Basically CIG stated an intent to switch engines. How much effort and work will be required for the switch is still unknown. But from Ben it will be very hard.

I am just saying you seem to be fanatically against a game, and very unreasonably to someone who is kind enough to provide some technical background info here. You can lash out at me or anyone else too if that is your thing, but I am not sure what you are hoping to achieve here. Ben has been saying time after time that the 'engine switch' did happen in two days, it is not a Ultimate Solution To Everything as some SC fanboys claim, nor is it 'just smoke and mirrors with no benefits' as distractors claim. Make of it what you will, and enjoy your crusade.

It might not make perfect business sense, again it didn't work out well for EVE online. You are making a conclusion with out all the facts, it could just as easily kill ED as it does improve it. Time will tell either way.

Actual benefits right out the gate are quite small (except using AWS), so there's that. So far it is on par everything CIG has done this year - they are smoke and mirrors to make crowdfunding money flowing from clueless backers.

How am I lashing out? You are the one issuing personal attacks. And you continue to do so in this post. Not sure why you think it is ok to attack another poster.

Did you bother to read what Ben said? He actually said the switch did not happen. It was just a licence switch, and CIG are still using the same code they already were.

With the difference being that when you change fork you can use things of the different fork that are better than what the first fork had. So they spend a little bit of time so they have some options they didnt have before. Remember that CIG didnt even mention it until players noticed the logo in 2.6. It was then the media who went ballistic, claiming a massive engine change at this stage would surely spell doom. Meanwhile Ben tries to explain it took a little bit of time for some work that may have (strong) benefits in the future.

It doesnt matter at this point what CIG does, some here will just bash it anyway. Completely new engine? HAHAHA, see I told you! Minor changes for future benefits? HAHAHA thats not even close to what needs to be done, you need a new engine! Keep working on the old SE fork of CT's CE3.7? HAHAHA, they dont even dare to admit its a dead-end!

Its quite sad really. Most of this topic is just light-hearted fun, with most of us actually hoping the game works out in the end. Some though really want the game to fail. Which is a bit... odd.

Feel free to report my posts to the mods if you think I am attacking you. I have no interest in another reply as this clearly wont go anywhere.

Errr, no. Avatars didn't work out well for EVE online because their developers didn't get a clue how to make them work within EVE universe, which is really player trade empire/strategy emergent universe, not built for direct interactions. ED is quite opposite of that. Do FD has good ideas how to implement space legs? I don't know, and it remains to be seen. However why would it "kill ED"? What does even mean? Either FD comes up with best solution/idea they can implement and it offers truly compelling gameplay, or it has similar issues as for example 2.0 (mechanics are there, but nothing much to do) and we still will be able to walk around, but nothing much to do. Not seeing it as 'killing move' there.

ED has planned spacelegs since the kickstarter. They always mentioned it, and they keep mentioning it to this day. EVE just threw it in as a way to market cosmetics from out of nowhere. Spacelegs will come at some pointm, unless FD goes broke.

Heck, I am sure I am not the only one here who would enjoy a hangar where you can walk around all your ships. Beats the debug cam we have now if you ask me...

Actually yes. CCP gave up on it because it was taking too much time and they were letting the real game rot. And when the players found out they started to leave. Not that they could not get it to work, they ended up not even getting to that stage.

Simple it takes away massive development time from actually implementing gameplay, keeping the game stagnant and driving players away, same as what happened with EVE online. Kill is perhaps not really the right word as it is very hard to actually kill a game. But it could do some real harm to the playerbase.

It is not really about FD coming up with something, it just how much resources are they will to devote to it and can they implement gameplay to justify those resources.

FD will have to model every ship, then give you a reason to walk around.
