Yep the only way to make this work for a large ship on a long mission would be to mimic real ships with 2 or 3 times as many crew and bunks as you have vital crew positions, or hot-bunking with a double crew (one out one in, not nice if your opposite number doesn't shower but no matter in a game). Either way you need to find people who are actually willing to regularly and reliably work shifts in a video game (people actually did that in EVE lol).

Not to mention crewmember 13 who only agreed to go along to open all the doors and airlocks to cause explosive decompression immediately after launch.

They obviously haven't thought this through, which begs the question is that because they've been bluffing along without a plan for 6 years or do they know they'll never need a working solution as the game will never reach that point. Or both obviously.

I'd worry about the uninvited goon who's glitched into the cargo bay and waits until everyone is asleep before ramming a station.

What am I thinking? The netcode won't support enough consecutive sessions to make a large ship even remotely viable!

We should merge this thread with the telepresence and ship transport discussion ones in the main forums :D

GOD no! the universe will implode and existence as we know it will end.

Ah, i see where its going now.

Buy an extra bed for your ship! Only $50 per bed from our store! Be the envy of your friends with this delux double bed with tiger stripe sheets and mirrored ceiling. Barry White will play when you get into bed.

Doubt it since ship equipment is supposed to be ingame cash.

but, since we are supposed to be able to BUY ingame cash they could make certain items more expensive if they need to balance them and double the price exponentially per ship.

- Additional bed for +1 crew logout (10$ / 20$ / 40$)
- Additional lifesupport to support +1 crew (10$ / 20$ / 40$)

Then you add additional rework of the hull to handle the oversized life support.

But im pretty sure some WOULD get the deluxe double bed with tiger stripes as some kind of bragging right.

A nice thread where people celebrate being seduced by CIG into spending far more than they intended https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitize...nyone_else_originally_get_this_game_thinking/

Meh, no worse than what I have forked out since I started gaming in a gazillion different hobbies like EVE, WoW, Warhammer 40K...( god...the amount of plastic one purchased for 20 years...)

Only difference is that this is a more risky purchase due to unknown release date but at the same time, a giant load of MMO's have shuttered mere months after release and this would be no different.

More like people pay up front for X product and hope the company does not go belly up before release date.

I just wanted to share a laugh..

I was going through youtube and decided to check out an SC video for kicks.

What's the first thing to pop up? An ad for Elite Dangerous. I giggled like a little girl.

Targetted advertising. A SC fan might not see that. They might see an advery for something else, like Hello Kitty.

That is one thing that annoys me though with targetted advertising. I once mentioned EvE in a comment on facebook. For weeks afterwards i got bombarded with adverts for EvE. Took me a while to remember i could actually click near the advert and tell facebook its not relevant or whatever. I think i actually said it was offensive to me :D

Can't say I've heard of a giant load of MMOs shuttering mere months after release.

In all other games where I have ended up spending a decent amount of money, its been on subscriptions and that's only because the game and its gameplay is good enough to keep me subscribed.
Comparing the purchase of game assets prior to a game's release to playing a game for many years is a really bad comparison.

Well, perhaps a bit of hyperbole but the point was that even games that gets released might not survive long.

That whole bed thing got me thinking, so i questioned it in the reddit thread, but ill post the same questions here:

Hmm.. i've just noticed the reverse side effect of this. What happens when you login, after going to bed, but you went to bed on a ship that wasn't yours?

You login, the owner isn't online... wow, the ship is yours! Time to fly into a sun for the lulz. :D

And does this mean it will be like Ark, where all objects persist, regardless of who is online, or would the ship magically appear when the first person logs in?

It certainly raises a few interesting questions.

I was reading a thread about that on reddit where a CIG dev explained it, you need to find a bunk to log off that's like the save point and an occupied bunk stays occupied until you log back in. This is space stations and ships, so you can take a 2 person ship with 4 people on a long run as long as you are willing to "play" in 12 hour shifts or return to base for you all to log out. Obviously logging off in the bunk of someone elses ship and never coming back to the game would be naughty. Also people with any real life responsibilities are screwed.

This is not a joke.

Thanks for that.

Please report back on the results of player theory-crafting! Interesting questions for sure.

German magazine heise.de did a piece on Star Citizen, mentioning the growing unease as the project is delayed over and over: https://www.heise.de/newsticker/mel...r-Kernschmelze-fuer-Crowdfunding-3723223.html

The comment section is flooded with astroturfing and up-voting of all pro-SC comments.

Quick n dirty tranlsation....

Permanent-Alpha Star Citizen: 150 million collected, fear of crowdfunding meltdown

The mega-project Star Citizen has collected more then 150 million US dollars but a release date is not available. A collapse might have dire consequences for the crowdfunding movement.

The crowdfunded game-project Star Citizen has collected more then 150 million US dollars. This has been announced via CiGs official fund-tracker. No other crowdfunding project was able to collect this amount of cash before. Since development started the CEO Chris Robert has brought up great expectations. Star Citizn is supposed to become the most complex space simulation to date, allowing the exploration of whole planets and providing multi-leveled economy mechanisms.

Earning money with virtual spaceships.

Players can continue to support the development by purchasing virtual spaceships. Not for petty cash tho. The newly announced spaceship Aegis Eclipse LTI goes for 275 US-dollars, the warbound edition still is 250. Today CiG increased these prices without any statement to 297,50 and 327,25 US-dollars. The previously listed Constellation Aquila is priced at 327,25 US dollars. Insider admit to heise online in march 2017 that a possible collapse of Star Citizen would equal a meltdown for the crodfunding model.

Star Citizens sale sites show an information that the game is still in Alpha. However development started back in 2012, by Cloud Imperium Games and numerous subsidiary companies. The next alpha-version 3.0 is announced for july 20th enabling players to land on planets. A final release date isnt available tho. The single-player campaign Squadron 42 was delayed, is still supposed to release 2017. Notes on the SQ42 website indicate that this game too is still in alpha.

Change to Vulkan

in march 2017, the lead graphic developer Alistair Brown stated in a forum post that Star Citizen would use the platform-independant interface Vulkan. Microsoft DirectX12 interface was disregarded, future support of DirectX11 was questioned. Its possible that these Vulkan-integrations are responsible for further delays of the mega-project Star Citizen.

Heres my favorit from the comments so far....

Misunderstood Businessmodel

Why should somebody finish the game? In the end people are going to be unhappy about it anyway. It has bugs, its too simple, somethings overpowered, expensive ships, bad balancing, doesnt run on Linux....all the internet ever does is complaining....especially the gamers. It makes more sense to promise everything while delivering nothing. Money is still coming in nevertheless.

I bet that's exactly what Chris Roberts is thinking.

No we won't. The game is never - ever - getting that far.

The goons would have a wonderful time with this.

Over on Spectrum, a CIG employee answers the question 'How many people can be in an instance?':

Clive Johnson CIG @cjohnson Yesterday at 11:36

In a single server instance we can currently have up to 40 players in Area18 or 24 players in Crusader. Matchmaking tries to put you in the same instance as your friends, but beyond that it is luck of the draw which instance you will end up in. However @H0wland is correct in that our goal is that eventually everyone will be in the same instance.
There quite a few engineering hurdles we need to overcome before this can happen. Server performance needs to improve a lot, so there are several tasks to address this that are either currently underway or in the schedule. This will only get us so far though, and won't be enough to fill a solar system with players and NPCs. To go further we are going to have to connect multiple servers together in something we're calling a "server mesh." Each server will take on the processing load for a region of space, and these regions will adjust their boundaries to best balance that load with their neighbors. You will be able to see (and fire) across the boundary from one server to another, and, as you fly through space, will move seamlessly from one server to another. We will also be able to dynamically add and remove servers to suit the current level of demand. This technology will allow us to scale almost without limit while keeping everyone in the same instance.
The problem we still need to figure out is how to handle everyone heading to the same place at the same time. I'm not sure there's an engineering solution to that one, so it may require some game mechanic to prevent too many players congregating in the same place.

TL;DR - yes, once all the pieces are in place and the kinks have been worked out, you'll be able to stalk your prey, and should always be in the same instance.

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/.../how-many-people-can-be-in-an-instance/198078

So they will have a system that will 'scale without limit' by limiting how many people can actually be in the same place at the same time. Doh!
