Hello everyone. I have finished grinding all rank in federation and empire and so i will now stop doing mass deliveries. This is going to be a pretty long post.
But here it is, the science behind tip-offs:
All in all i have done something around 3000 missions since 2.1 released.
- Around 500 missions all across the bubble directly after 2.1 release in an effort to figure out mission rewards for materials. This is pretty straightforward. The rank of the mission determines which grade of material you are going to get. But this is irrelevant information for this thread. What is relevant is that i received 0 tip offs from doing this. Most missions were done for factions that would jump on cordial after completing the mission. So none of the factions i worked for were on friendly/allied status.
- Around 200 missions in Sothis afterwards got me a solid 9 tip offs. It was ghastly how quickly they accumulated here.
- Around 1500 missions blowing through empire ranks in Shu Bubassi. I have got exactly 1 tip off from doing this.
- Went back to Sothis and got another 9 tip offs over 800 missions.
Things that were done
- I have never got a tip off from a faction i'm not allied with.
- I have done tons of missions for a faction that i'm allied with and only got one tip out of it. (Shu Bubassi)
- I have done tons of elite rank missions and only got one tip out of it. (Shu Bubassi)
- The rate of tips acquired exploded when i work at Sothis, where i'm allied with all factions.
- Doing missions for only specific factions, like Federation Unite! gave me tips, but the same is true for other independent factions. So the high rate is not unique to just one faction in Sothis.
- If transport, source, combat zone and mining missions give tip offs, i simply didn't luck out to get one from it.
I have done way too few assassinations, liberations and acquisitions to make any guesses.
So what gives? The only consistent thing here is that you need to be at Sothis to get tip offs fast.
It is a mystery.
Now on to the tip-offs themselves
- It appears that there is a limited amount of new tip-offs released each week, at server maintenance on thursday.
- Tips will fade out over time. At some point the wreck is gone forever and you lost your chance to see it and its message.
- The package value is completely random for every player that scans it. Values from 100k up to 2m have been seen.
- Tips appear to draw their contents from a randomized table.
Messages
I already wrote this down in the spreadsheet, so i'm just going to use a screen of it here.

The exception
Up to a certain point it appeared that the Flair text and the wreck messages were unlinked. It was until 3 days ago that
CMDR WarLord101 found the Pardal tip off wreck. This is truly exceptional as the context from both the flair and the wreck message heavily imply ties. Here is are the messages.
Other cool stuff
Apart from the Pardal wreck. There are other nice finds. If you wish to check out these places, visit
this spreadsheet for all the information. It is the same sheet that Panzertard linked in the OP.
- The infamous Kuru wreck, with the crashing problem
- The ghost ship wreck in Omega-1 Aquarii on the planet with 2.25G, we get a date
This is very cool and could lead to something interesting.
- I discovered a new tip off yesterday in Bakawa. It was a normal sidewinder wreck with a data core. Upon checking the wave scanner however, i found another signal. After only a bit of driving i find a DBE wreck with another data core. Two data cores. This is unheard of. Possibility: It is another tip off that can be handed out right now and this is the wreck for it. I heard that sometimes you can find other wrecks nearby. It is possible that wrecks are randomly placed somewhere near the co-ordinates and those co-ordinates will still be used for other tip-off spawns, further reinforcing the notion that tip-offs are randomly generated using premade texts and locations.
Edit:
How could i forget! Of course we have the alien related wreck messages.
