The Type-8

I didn’t think either Cobra Mk2 actually worked well enough to actually crash.
i could be wrong as it is from memory......... but wasn't there a rumour that a single cobra mkII was bought up by some billionaire or something and was still surviving somewhere in a hidden collection?

or is that some fan fiction someone made up??

Fan fiction (may have been part of a Oolite expansion pack)

The FFE manual as pictured above is the most detail any official source goes into about what happened to the Cobra Mk II - the original Elite manual just says
"the Mk 2 only reached prototype stage and was abandoned due to a design fault in the hull"

I'd guess/hope there's no way this thing comes out without moveable containers of some sort. I'd think the containers would be attached on top of the prongs, as there seems to be some devices aimed upwards. Maybe it creates a magnetic lock to these containers. That'd account for the cockpit being the low point, the field of view is clear if the containers are fixed above.
Then you'd have this ship able to land on smaller pads but can move huge amounts of junk.

I wonder what the big round hatch on the side of the ship could be ?

P.S. I looked closely and it seems to me that these two large sticks (horns) and are compartments for the same boxes along the length of the ship.
And what we see in the front on the horns is a winch mechanism to move the containers along the length of the ship for unloading from the back.
Maybe there will be 10 pieces of class 5 containers in it ?

thanks... after writing my post i wondered if infact you had not already corrected me on that front once before............. old ingrained memories are slow to die however.

the yellow circled one on the side looks to me like some sort of a docking port to transfer - possibly people, possibly transfering materials - from the ship to something else when landing is not an option.... mind you if so then maybe the engines would get in the way :/
but it could just be for show without any function.

It would be cool if carried cargo was visible externally.

From what I've seen of the Type 8, I think it looks good. I can't wait to buy it just to see. Same with the Python mk2. I won't be buying early access to either, price is a bit steep but I will purchase them at their release. I'm kinda hoping for an exploration type ship, something that rivals the DBX, maintaining a small foot print with the ability to have a really good jump range, even greater than the current DBX capabilities.

It’d be cool if you could pull up to an outpost where you can’t land, and use limpets or and alternate docking mechanism to transfer cargo. To keep the game somewhat balanced, this would be slower than landing. So basically you’d trade speed for size.

And with the new ship, there could be an option to have an external cargo pod, which would mean you can only land at stations with large pads (or surface ports since they don’t take you underground) - or remove the pod and land at outposts.

The hatch at the side caught my eye immediately also. It actually looks like an airlock, though I say that knowing that I'm throwing red meat to the 'ship interiors' crowd that could lead to wild speculation and another ride on the great expectations rollercoaster.. I don't think this is 'ship interiors confirmed', but still.. that's what looks like to me.

Otherwise, my first impressions are that it looks amazing. As far as the discussion about internals vs. the Python MkI go, I thought I heard that the 'prongs' were there to make room for the hardpoints, which would plausibly leave more internal space for storage options, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the Type 8 hold at least the same max cargo as the Python, and likely more.

I also think that the low-hung cockpit (missus) is reminiscent of the Krait and think that this could have fit very well as a Krait Heavy or something. Overall, I love it and I'm hopeful that the internals do it justice. I'm really liking the design direction these new ships are taking.

The canopy is 1:1 with Type 7, which also has the cockpit low in the hull. I think it's very likely T8 is a heavily modified version of T7: shortened and chopped hull, engines, hardpoints and other mechanicals moved to outriggers, similar internal capacity. The side "hatch" looks kind of similar to the dorsal dome of PII, it might be something about FSD and SCO capabilities.

Anyway, for me the main questions are:
1. How fast, how nimble, can it jump?
2. What's the hardpoint configuration, can it mine, can it fight, can it pirate?
3. Will the interior look nicer than the T7 and does it have extra seats?

I've been admiring the T-8 and considering Arf's comments on the stream.

My impression (that is all) is that he has implied it is going to be quick & capable - and good cargo capacity, although how much? Dunno Guv.
Said impression working on the logic that the 'new' SCO ships are intended to thrive in PP 2.0, so able to handle a bit of aggro, and dish it back...

Other impressions are available (y)

That's what I inferred from the livestream, too, but we may never know how exactly it will be before it becomes available to buy for credits or arrrs. I hope it can boost to around 530...540 when not loaded, jumps about as well as Krait MKII or Python, handles similar to Challenger (the maneuvering thrusters on the prongs with most of the mass concentrated to the midships should allow for some good pitch rate in theory) and has something like two large, one medium and two small hardpoints for all the toys:p

Once again, the Clipper is for the middle court.

Looking at the P2 I wouldn't be surprised by a direct copy & paste of the T7 cockpit.

It's the overhead prongs that make me think of the Krait, specifcally, but I see what you mean about the cockpit being in the same place as on the T7.

We wait and see! I have a feeling the hardpoints might be more in keeping with a T10 than a T9.

Almost every ship has a hatch, I dunno why people think this one is spec...nevermind. ;)

What matters is the hatch size, location and shape. I looked around at my Cutter, FDL, ASP ... and haven't found anything like it. Can you give me an example of such hatches on other ships? Or just one?
(I know where the cargo and fighter hatches are located on other ships).
