The X-Rebirth Thread

Please Don't Do This...

I am so sorry in advance for the fact that I am going to mention a product from another games house, but I sincerely believe that this is important...

With that disclaimer then...

On Friday I took delivery of "X:Rebirth" from Egosoft. I have been fanatically loyal and enthusiastic Egosoft Gamer since X:Beyond The Frontier, and have amassed hundreds if not thousands of hours playing every title in the X franchise. Then came Rebirth.

Well, it should have been called still-birth. This is, without doubt, the worst space sim I have ever tried [and failed] to play. It's incredibly buggy, it can't even recognise the most basic hardware [Logitech Wingman joystick? Forget it - you're screwed] and although it looks *staggeringly* beautiful out in space, the rest of the game is a complete and utter steaming pile of poo.

Please, please, please, David & Team: order a couple of copies of this new release, and install on a couple of your test machines and give the game a try. Whatever you do, please, please, please *do not* release anything that bad...

It's riddled with bugs.

It runs like a dog on top-end machines [common complaint]

It crashes to the desktop, or hangs, or randomly minimses it's own window.

It's first-person sequences [walking around stations] are cringeworthy they are so bad. *** This is a serious one, Frontier guys... I know that David is keen to have us explore inside stations, and stow away on ships. Please don't do it like this...***

It has the most pathetically fiddly interface, ever. Stations are vast and incredibly detailed, but the player has to identify and then land on tiny little docking pads. They're not obvious. You can't auto-pilot to them. The docking sequence itself is non-intuitive.

It has unbelievably annoying little "mini-game" features. There are abysmal "space highways" connecting parts of a solar system, and each highway is divided into 9 lanes in a 3-by-3 grid. Except other ships pass the player ship more quickly, so to get anywhere in reasonable time the player is expected to "bump" their ship from lane to lane, to take a tow from faster-moving traffic. Really? Really?

I hate to write this. I've been a fan of the X:Franchise since they started.

But the truth is that this is the worst and least playable game I have purchased in *years*. Please, please, please Frontier: take as long as you need to write a great game, just don't produce crap like this.

Apart from the bugs, why are the game mechanics and production quality a surprise? I mean it was all obvious how it would be from the preview videos and trailers.

I honestly don't get these complaints and IMO it's blown out of proportion.

Worry not! None of what you complained about will occur in Elite: Dangerous. The very reason they're not including "in person" stuff from the start is so they have the time to do it right. And, of course, the focus is initially on really amazing spaceship gameplay :)

I have a high level of trust for Frontier, and I honestly think they care too much about this game to let it fail. Things like the first-person element are likely to be alpha/beta tested just as the original release will, so players' opinions will be voiced long before the point of no return. I don't think you have anything to worry about, but I can see why you are worried, especially after the disappointing continuation of the X series you really seem to love. :(

I'm starting to feel really sorry for the X: Rebirth devs now... Poor guys.

I think this just shows how important is to communicate with community if you are about to do drastic changes to established game play of series. Lack of communication during pre-order period clearly plays huge rule of this sad situation.

Agreed, totally. :(

*sigh*

You know guys, all this whining is really quite pathetic. In truth, its probably the worst part of online forum communities as they "always" come to this. I remember back in the early EVE days, we'd get a patch and the crap would hit the fan ... every ... single ... bloody ... time! Not once in ten years did we have a smooth patch roll out. People would DL the patch and go into insta-whine mode. Then the forums would go into this stupid "FLAME ON" mode as selective parts of the so called "rational, friendly community" got bent out of shape and seek to utterly slam the devs for the smallest bloody things.

You lot do know this chack is going to happen here as well as the future unfolds. yes? We've got all this kind of stupidness to look forward to every time FD release an update patch or bit of DLC. FD could release the cleanest, smoothest game ever and it would still get swathes of nonces getting on the forums to ranting and trying to roast the devs over the pits of hell in flame fire.

I wonder, I wonder if the nature of space games these days can be played by the kinds of people that have the attention span of a fruit fly? I mean, they want all, instant gratification but depth that lasts months, years? Oh yes without any effort.

I can just hear the cries and whining now, in game and on the forums here; "It's too complicated FD, it's too hard, it's too easy FD, it's not hard enough! The weapons need nerfing FD, they're too powerful, they're too weak now! Where was the alpha/beta/gamma testers? ... You guys are a joke!" Oh yes, we've got all this kind of idiotic rubbish to look forward too. Wonderful!

Err? wait a minute ...

"communicate with community" you say? So, a load of YT videos on "X Rebirth - Features explained" through the months prior meant nothing then? Ahhh... so visual and audible communication is not enough? I get it. direct neuro-net upload next time then? Got to be better right? As for pre-order, as a follower the information Egosoft were giving out and as a player of their games, I had a real good idea of what I was pre-ordering, strange you didn't? Real strange that.

Care to explain why some games get universally positive reviews from both critics and gamers and some do not?

It's not just that fans are nasty bunch you. I don't believe people are inherently evil, but they just ignite too easily. There has been much expectation for XR. Fans have probably imagined something different from what they've received.

I haven't ordering anything, because I never found X series appealing (despite them claiming to be Elite successors). I don't say that Egosoft haven't done anything. They have explained game features quite clearly, and as I said previously, they're not big surprise to me. Still...if your fan base are very angry and very local, something clearly has gone wrong. Maybe "we are doing this game to introduce new fans to X series universe, and we will do X4 too" letter or something...I don't know. As I said, it is difficult case, but it is clearly a misscommunication too. And also if there would be at least half less bugs, uproar wouldn't be as big.

I have huge suspicions that problem was advertisement. Egosoft maybe explained lot of details, but advertisement promised same X just boosted to AAA levels (making clueless SC community members even speculate will SC be able to deliver something better visually), leaving critical changes in game play aside.

Said that, I can fully agree that gaming online community isn't shining example of objectivity and constructive criticism so what's happening in XR and Steam forums must be taken in with caution. Lot of emotions about failed expectations usually don't make you objective critic. However, there's other side to this story, as industry easily exploit popularity of the series or genre to cash in. So it can create background for such anger too.

Maybe because those kinds of games you are referring to tend to be short term games, not long term niche games like, Elite, X, EVE, etc etc? Critics tend to go on instant game accessibility and seldom get deeply into the game before they write their reviews.

Also many gamers will hear the "hype" of niche crowd games and want to take a look. Niche crowds tend to be very vocal and supportive, yet your casual gamer will come along pick up the same game and get ed off with 10 to 20 mins of play.

I get the feeling there are a lot of people who are claiming they have played the earlier games but in truth only skimmed the surface or read about them. Now comes along X:R and they expect something insta action, insta story, more Le GTA is space ... they don't get that and they get ed off and start ranting.

Yeah, as Egosoft meant to do this to themselves

As per PacalB I echo his sentiments - pretty much *every* online game I have ever played has during every patch or upon initial release had problems.

It's going to happen with ED ...

Very true, though ED will have one up by proxy of it being disclaimed as alpha/beta/gamma. Did XR have no such testing phase? I always see the biggest uproar with fans where there's no testing phase, not to be mistaken by PR betas.

As moaning immortal often said ... 'you cant be serious '

You have X Veterans who have been playing the series for a decade who have trashed it. You have moderators on their OWN forums saying this. I have put in hundreds of hours into it myself and I am saying this. The real question is why are people so offended that players have such responses.

Then you get some that say .. ahhh offcourse I expected XR to be like that. Let me refresh your memory..

TRADE! A fully simulated economy in which every action has consequences. Every ship you see has a task.

Every ship in those highway lanes has no purpose .. just follow one and see.

FIGHT! From small scale skirmishes to epic fleet encounters, battles in the X Universe know no limits.

No limits? I cant even auto-target an enemy, cant follow an enemy past the front view .. cant .. ahhhh

BUILD! Create your own empire!

Cant even complete the first trade tutorial mission .. the first TUTORIAL mission designed to introduce new players to the game dosn't even work.

THINK! A rich, detailed history and a deep complex plot await you,

Yea.. get on a station.. open the SAME crates over and over again to get loot. Find free loot in space just floating around for no reason.

If a game stinks, then I say it, and this one reeks. Its not a question of bugs. X games gave always had bugs. Its the failure in design.

There is a positive side to all this where more people will migrate from the X universe to this one - hoping ED will be what XR should have been.

Won't be long before we find out.

Interesting game launch with all the discussion it has produced, but I really see little reason why we should discuss it on the Elite: Dangerous General forum. These are two different games by two different developers. They will _not_ be the same, so why worry about them being the same?

I agree PacalB; I followed the early videos and have (attempted to play) the earlier releases of the X universe games. I'm only playing the Campaign, but have had almost no problems doing so! I see the niggling complaints people are talking about, but have not had any of the major problems people are talking about. No CTD's, no fps problems. I suspect these are in the other part of the game-The 'freeplay'. Yes of course we'd like every release of a game to be perfect. Sorry folks! this is just the way things are; Egosoft has a very good record of listening to their purchasers and they will nail down the major bugs in the part of the game I haven't played yet....
