The Zoolympic Games

I don't think I can join this competition. The Zoo file won't open, so I can't finish it (and I was almost done with it). I will try again tomorrow, but after tomorrow, I will be away from my computer until this competition is over. To be honest, I made it way too big, so I kind of deserve this.

Edit: nevermind

ugh .. looks like this one might be one of those challenges that might just be too hard to do hardware wise, or time wise. Maybe extend the timing or put it on pause until you get back, I know I have plenty of other zoos to work on in the mean time, especially my Madagascar Zoo for the official challenge this week. See what everyone thinks on the challenge.

Aw I'm so sorry Mr Hyrax, that totally sucks :(

Definitely
Guys does everyone want more time for this challenge?

Until 1st December?
that would work, I could try again when I get back, this time a much smaller island

Please, forgive me for the question, but is Madagascar okay for the theme? I know the original title was Island Chain and at least 3 different islands but then the rules were updated. Is it still a requirement to have multiple islands or it could be just one?

You could always add the islands around Madasgcar. The Seychelles include Aldabra. I have that included on my Madagascar part of my World Zoo. Even if they are just stepping stone islands the zoo keepers use.

On to Round 6!

Friday 8th November - Monday 18th
Sunday 1st December (time extended for everybody)

(as always, if you need an extension to the deadline it's fine, but post in the group so that we wait to score until you've submitted)

The most popular theme by vote as of today is...

Create an Island Chain inspired by regional island nations or clusters e.g. Japan, Borneo, Hawaii, Iceland etc.

That's fun! I'll set the parameters for this build:

EDITED TO BE FREER AND ALLOW MORE CHOICE
  • Must include at least three islands
  • Must include at least three animal species
  • The animals must be from the islands they live on (but mods and subspecies swaps are allowed, i.e. the red fox can be used to represent the ezo fox for example).
I imagine pathing and zookeeper gates are going to be the trickiest aspects of this build, so have a think about how you're going to manage that before you start! Please do all your landscaping and pathing before you place in the water...take it from me that it's really hard to fix things once you've added water!

We've also got some decisions to make as a group about how scoring is managed going forwards. There was some discussion about this here and here.
Please can you comment in this thread to vote yes/no or add your voice to the discussion?
I will make a final decision and announce it by Monday 18th November before the next round of scoring begins.

1. Yes or No: Increase the scoring to points out of 10
2. Yes or No: Swap 'Realism' with 'Level of Detail' in the scoring categories
3. Yes or No: Remove 'Animal Welfare' from the scoring categories

Time extended for this challenge until 1st December due to popular request :)

Please interpret the challenge in any way you like. I originally set the rules to be much tighter for this round but lots of people had different creative ideas so let's blow it wide open!

Update on the vote for scoring decisions:
Option to keep or lose animal welfare from scoring categories is currently tied. Vote if you have any preference. If still tied in a week or so I'll add my vote to keep it.

So far it's looking like a certain 'yes' to make scoring points out of ten, and also a yes to swap realism for level of detail (good idea @KönigDerKaffeebohnen - thank you)

Tagging @Marvinb @Hugo98 @BiologicalHorror to make sure you see this in case you're joining in 💚 not tagging people who are clearly very active on here at the moment so as not to be a nuisance to you! :)

I think going forwards I'll aim for one challenge per month with 3 weeks of building and 1 week to score, wrap up and set up for the next round.

The next round will be the December round then - holiday theme anybody? :) "Winter Festival" - all interpretations welcome ?
That could be fun, maybe I can do something similar to the Zookeeper's Animal Packs map, but winter/Christmas themed

Yeah, I will have to skip this time because my mind is too scattered and I struggle with focusing on a complex project like this.
I use this game to relax and while sometimes I can plan something bigger, usually I prefer to think about one habitat at a time, without a big theme for a whole area.
Good luck everyone! I'll be glad to join the judging :)
