Thoughts on an Exploration based SRV

So we got the official word to expect a twin-seat SRV from FDev recently. Sounds like the rumors about the Scorpion may be finally coming true. I'll definitely be interested to see how this pans out. That said, it got me thinking that we'll now have a general purpose SRV and a combat SRV. Frankly, I see the general purpose SRV making a good fit for salvage ops and surface prospecting. But there's still another major aspect of Elite: Dangerous to consider, and that is exploration.

It can definitely be argued that you know longer really need an SRV for exploring, but not having one completely eliminates any possibility of surface prospecting (would love to see on-foot mining tools added) and moving around to collect biological scan data can be really tedious. Often times you're either getting back in your ship and taking off and landing over relatively short distances, or you're running on foot for what can feel like forever.

This is where an exploration SRV might come in super handy. I've got a few thoughts on implementing something I think would fit the bill. First off, I'm thinking it takes a completely different approach that the traditional SRV. My first and main thought is that instead of being a rolling, ground vehicle, base it off of the skimmers and make it a small hovering vehicle. It doesn't fly like a ship would, it only hovers. Next, strip it of all weapons and cargo space and give minimal shielding to tremendously reduce the weight and storage space required. You could also still have it be viable for some surface prospecting by having a low-power mining laser. I'm thinking it would do the job, but not as effectively as the dual-repeater on the Scarab.

Anyway, I think it would be a neat addition for exploration. It would give you some weight savings for those deep space adventures, but also give you a way to bop around quickly on the surface. Plus, it would be fun to run a canyon at high speed while only a few meters off the ground.

I like the idea of a skimmer as an exploration SRV.
After months of exo-biology, I have come to the conclusion that the Scarab is completely useless for it.

Hopping with a small ship takes much less time, goes much faster and grants a better, impaired field of view: a hovering SRV, possibly with tools that integrate the Artemis suit, would be an elegant solution that could make me think of using it instead of just relying on my ship.

Right now, my only use for the SRV in an exloration trip would be to gather materials and to pick up the odd canister, but I don't do any of that, so it's just a dead weight and I might ditch it for an upcoming expedition.

The key feature for an exploration SRV to have, I think, would be a turret-mounted exobiology sampler to save having to get out of the vehicle ~three times per plant.

It would give you some weight savings for those deep space adventures
The weight cost for SRVs is the hangar module, not the SRVs - you pay the same weight for (pointlessly) taking an empty SRV bay out.

I thought about that too. My first thought was to have a separate SRV module that is significantly less weight, but then I thought it might be more practical to use the same module and have a mechanic implemented to reduce the weight of the hangar when the Hover SRV is outfitted.

In principle, I'm positive about these ideas, but that would require major changes to the overall exploration mechanics. Otherwise, I have shocking news for you: I already do this "hovering" in my Cobra, and without the cargo space restrictions. 🤷‍♂️
There were a couple of mentions regarding this such as being able to scan from the SRV and another more generally stating that it could integrate with the Artemis suit. And I'd absolutely go that route. I think my primary implementation would be to include the pulse scanner, but not so much the genetic sequencer. My rationale is that we effectively get three benefits out of it. 1.) It hovers and can therefore traverse over biological and geological obstacles very quickly and easily. 2.) It has an integrated pulse scanner so you can readily see biological specimens that you are looking for without having to disembark. 3.) Being a vehicle that is even smaller than the Scarab, the craft can practically land almost anywhere and in an extremely short amount of time. I know the ships can auto-land now, but it can still take a while and larger ships may absolutely have to move a significant distance from your targeted area.

What exploration gameplay? Is there any?
Scanning weeds n shrooms ain't my idea of exploration, that's biology or whatever.
Till they've fleshed out exploration in oddity myself, and alot of other cmdrs give the whole subject a wide berth.
Fully engineered dom and mav suits...no such artemis.
Did grab one with nv though...mbbe comes in handy for moss detection!
MORE EXPLORATION CONTENT

OP, you read my mind.

I am working on my exobiologiststst career and looking for fungoids in a hilly/mountainous areas is a pain. And a big one at that. I just spent a good half hour looking for a landing spot (auto land is just as useless) and even though I found several the game just wouldn't let me land.

So.... I would love an exploration SRV that could:

  • hover instead of drive
  • be deployed from a ship without landing (just like we can be picked up by our ship now)
  • scan for life forms
  • be quick and nimble

I think we have had enough combat content with Odyssey and FDev could focus a bit more on explorers.

I've been doing a lot of scavenging from wreck sites recently(*) The 2 cannister limit on the SRV is silly.
We need a much bigger ground vehicle that can carry at least 8 cannisters. That way you could scavenge everything from a crash site without haviing to go back to your ship.

(*) mostly because I love landing on the new odd planets, and got fed up with scanning one type of plant at a time.

Hahaha Fdev and exploration, good one ... Whilst the idea is excellent, Fdev don't understand the exploration side . See the new biological's ?? A gazillion planets and 20 planetside bios ...

Hm, an exploration SRV sounds awesome. I love the skimmer idea too, high speed - low defensive capabilities - zero offensive capabilities. I can also think of some activities that it could be used for. Surveying, storing and analyzing plant samples and taking geological samples. In regards to its utility devices, a drill for the geological samples and maybe a rangefinder to mark / survey locations and POIs.

There are 600+ in my current sector...
There are 21 planetside biologicals in EDO that have been found ( canonn vista genomics) . There are a lot of sub species ( blue white green etc some have up to 15 sub species ) I'm not sure of the space ones .
As EDH no longer shows the EDO discovories in our codex I can only go by the Frontier supported Canonn research .
My point is it's still empty and as an explorer, EDO as it stands now does not tickle my fancy . My own thoughts and opinions and no disrespect is meant .

It would be great to have some sort of exploration SRV without a need to hop in/out via black screen.

So imagine 2-seat SRV, your NPC crew in a driver seat and you jumping in and out and giving orders like "stop here", "move in the pointed direction" and at the same time able to use biological scanner (or hand weapon in combat variant).

And being able to mine raw materials and collect cargo (one container at a time) on-foot would be nice addition.

Does anyone know if the element above the radar in the SRV provides any useful information?

If surface mining is ever introduced it will would be logical to have a surveyor/explorer type SRV. This would also open the door for perhaps a heavy transport type SRV with 10t to 20t cargo space.

Personally though I'm hoping for the Tank SRV that we will take in to battle against Thargoid ground forces...
