To Solo Play Players: If You Could Disable PVP, Would You Play in Open Play Mode Instead?

But that wasn't what I really meant when I was talking about balancing the game around 1v1's vs wingfights.
The thing is that the average life expectancy of the first focus in a 4v4 wingfight is about 5 minutes, sometimes even less. Most 4v4 wingfights don't even last longer than 7 to 8 minutes (and it's not even really worth it to mention bigger fights like 5v5s and upwards). 7 to 8 minutes are just about right, but if you want to weaken ships significantly in order to speed up 1v1 duels, then wingfights will be way too fast (it would not worth it to spend 5 to 15 minutes to set up an instance for the fun of a 1 minute long fight, in which the 1st focus would probably be nearly instakilled). And 1v1s aren't even particularly long as things stand now, see the other video I posted.
I think people lose track of the unintended consequences of implementing their preferred solutions.

I don't want unsolicited PvP combat... but I'm not dead against it either.

Last night I took off from Deciat in my nearly fully engineered T10 cargo barge and got attacked by an FdL with some seriously good weaponage as I took off. I got seriously owned; no kill but I managed to escape to PG, reboot/repair to bring thrusters back online, and pay the Cr 2M to repair. I was shooting back but his ship was... HARD. I also blocked the involved player.

Were I not in a massive hulltank T10 with engineered shields, I would have been one-shotted. I have no doubt whatsoever. I think the ganker was surprised I fought back and lasted about 2 minutes before limping off.

I found the experience irritating but exhilirating at the same time. I thought initially I might be able to actually survive it and beat him; but no chance. BUT... and here's the thing.

I was in a T10 with lots of engineering done. I have been playing for 15 months (although I'm no combateer). I know what buttons to press and when, and I don't panic much under attack (maybe a little but not a lot). I was just able to survive without paying a Cr 24M rebuy. This isn't how I see "enjoyable" PvP playing out. This is tin-can-on-a-wall stuff. I don't think this particular CMDR did anything wrong - but I didn't like it much when I weigh up everything in my head.

A n00b experiencing this, would have no idea who the attacker was; would have no idea that blocking existed or how to achieve it; might not even understand that they had been attacked by another player; would not necessarily know about (or have chance to use) escape to PG, reboot/repair, limp to station... it would literally, for the n00b, have been (a) take off, (b) BOOM. No opportunity to save himself or do anything about it. THIS is the part I find offensive, and difficult to swallow. That n00b might never come back to the game. He might tell friends it wasn't a good experience and those friends might never try the game. Not only is it a lose/lose for FDev and the n00b, but the ganker gets literally NOTHING out of it.

We are starting to repeat the same arguments, story's, experiences and solution proposals again and again. As a almost from the beginning contributor to this thread I am getting tired. No offense at all to anybody here, but this discussion is pointless. Maybe interesting, but pointless.
It kinda depends (the OP pinned this as a DEV post so I assume they're one of the dev team) whether the OP is reading every single reply and collating notes to make actual changes to the actual game.

I can only hope...?

And that's why this thread is great: it acts like a sewer, and all the Open vs Solo threads that taint the forums are now converging into this one.

Just to clarify, the OP did not pin this as a DEV thread, but a while ago one of the Frontier CMs responded to it, which auto-flags the thread with the DEV symbol.

Starting?
The entire thread is a repeat of stuff that's rehashed in every Hotel California thread.
I suspect Robert has stock posts saved to copy & paste when appropriate.

 "ships go boom" cit.
A player ship go boom exactl the same way as a npc ship. So why booming player ships as they are also more seldom to find then npc ships? Could it be, that it is not the pure ship booming that makes someone happy? Could it be that it have to be a player ship? A player alone? Does it even matter if it is a ship? Booming players (in space or on foot) seem to make some people happy. Why?

It's irrelevant.

It's how it affects you and your gameplay that is more important.
