To Solo Play Players: If You Could Disable PVP, Would You Play in Open Play Mode Instead?

Just to reframe: you see no problem at all.

Do you feel most PvE players also see no problem - i.e., "If I want to get with other players, I'll just use <social media/forums/etc> to find that group when I'm ready"?
Not that i have found and certainly not from the group of 20+ players i regularly talk to.
why??? Because the group of players (all from my Everquest Guild) are older players like me with jobs and family's, we really don't have time to organise using the PG option and so play in Solo.
If there was a PVE Open like in Everquest or ESO (which we play occasionally) we could just hop in and out and meet up whenever a few of us were online.

A group server for just a few of us kinda defeats the object, i would love to meet up and make friends with new players as i do in EQ and other MMOs ive played, im just old and have a pretty short fuse for idiots, hence gankers and pad blockers really wind me up.
I only ever do PvP when i WANT to be in that enviroment (Cyrodiil for example), if im doing PVE i want to relax and do quests or in Elites case CGs and the multitude of other things the game has to offer.

I mean, Kumo are a pirate faction, no?

It's not so much players using that as a smokescreen IMHO & aren't they the "bad boys"?

I'd be very wary of any Kumo affiliated pilots (I'm unpledged)
Pirates are one thing, gankers are another thing. No problem with RP Pirates at all, they are in fact vital for our squadrons playstyle. This specific cmdr I wrote about killed me shortly after the Kumo Crew Onionhead (Gamma) / Helix Production CG, where I was hauling for the Kumo Council. At least he did somehow try to justify ist with the chat text "If you are not a member of the Kumo Crew, you are no one". I wasn't pledged to any Power and did not have a squadron or were member of one at this time. And because I just before did support the Kumo Onionhead campaign I was extremely enraged about this (Allied with the Kumo Council).

Fair, I can see how that must have been upsetting.

I remember that CG - it got me my T9 iirc.

I suppose it would be useful if you could see who players are allied to in terms of BGS (but I'm stumped on how that info could be presented)

To paraphrase Athletico Mince - "Gank bangers - you gotta love 'em"

Meaning they going to do what they're going to do.

That was the first CG I ever participated in. Just bought the game some weeks before. I did the CG in an unengineered Krait Mk2 and did know very little about the game then. In the retrospective it was curious and gave me a misunderstanding in terms of PvP. I knew about the evasive drill by some Youtube Videos and had even trained it sometimes with a Ingame friend. At the CG itself I was interdicted around 4 times by a player (can not remember exactly). But I always managed to escape by low waking. I was not even interdicted again. So I thought everything cool and engineering is not so important. From my today's experience level, I would say I was very lucky at this CG but thought this is the normal way. So when I got ganked killed the first time by this ganker and in addition to my support of the Kumo CG I really was upset. This event however was the initial push to join this forum and I asked for help and advice. Thanks again to zikolach, Snowygerry, northpin and brrokk who helped me a lot with explanations and advice together with some Ingame friends I had found back then.

When I met this ganker again at the 3.Phase Colonia Bridge CG, I was able to escape him with ease. So if you put aside all rage and angriness this event was vital for me to understand more of the game, gave me the ambition to engineer, learn FA off and more.

I think that's a typical experience for a lot of people

I do think that the difficulty curve from NPC to CMDR is too steep and there is very little in game to prepare a new CMDR for the new experience.

I'd like to see some practice drills added on for:-

Outfitting. An gruff engineer type gives you a run down on what the numbers and letter mean. Voiced by TF2s engineer

A mission to get to a station by avoiding interdiction (e.g learning to use the scanner). NPC voiced by a flirty Scarlett Johansson.

A mission where you're in a hauler, or similar where you lose the interdiction and then have to high wake out of there. Voiced by Liam Neeson

A mission (with online leaderboard) where you have to use gravity wells to get to a station in record time. This one voiced by a petulant 9 year old child.

Yep we are "criminal powerplay pirate" faction... so definitively "bad boys" (and girls :D ).

That's very unfortunate indeed... I remember that CG as it was one of the two or three which have happened in our space. FYI on XBOX we played that CG as "lawfuls", I mean somehow offering protection to traders supporting Kumo Council (enemy players did have to "pay" for it as we RP'ed that way) even besides it's Feudal faction, so not a keen one for the Archon, but I remember we tried to address our peeps more or less the same on the other platforms.

.... where players in each affect the galaxy and where players can shoot at any player they encounter.
Indeed so!

If I don't want to 'interact' with time wasters, I don't - PG is the perfect solution, I get to play with like-minded individuals (or present the opportunity to do so) and have plenty of fun doing so.

I am completely in favour of choice, if it wasn't there I'd not be playing.

There's the irony. There are people who don't like other people having choice... in a sandbox game...

Indeed - it seems to be an insistence that some players can play how they want to (with no regard for what other players want) and other players should be forced to play the way the first group want them to play....
Exactly. All the complaining about gankers and how C&P for open should be rendered draconic to prevent such has become tedious.

As have the complaints from some players that players in modes other than Open are affecting "their" game, proposals / demands to variously remove Solo and Private Groups, make players in Solo and Private Groups have no effects on the game, force players to play in Open to engage in one or more existing game features, etc...

And yet the most consistent complaint regarding game modes always starts with another incident of the great ganking plague.

The complaints are lessening, possibly as a result of the playerbase being split between Horizons and Odyssey... Or even that players who don't wish to waste their 'valuable' play time being sensible an using a mode suitable to that which they wish to achieve, who knows?

The hilarious part is, of course, that with the lessening number of "gank plague" posts, there appears to be more shouting out how unfair the modes are and that open only is the only way.. Isn't that curious?
