To Solo Play Players: If You Could Disable PVP, Would You Play in Open Play Mode Instead?

your ship comes with two fixed lasers - why did you remove them?
not the smartest option.
Because he just wants be a Trader and not a Combat Pilot , gankers tend to pick on ships that have absolutely no chance of defending themselves and so are effectively bullies . Other MMO games have a PVP on or off toggle and some like World of Warcraft have a far larger playerbase than ED . It's amazing how the PVP minority are so very vocal on these forums ..........

Two basic fixed lasers against fully engineered killing machine. Yeah like threatening a tank with .22 :D

No one here is asking for 'Randoms' though are they... everyone is demanding that every encounter they have be with peaceful, friendly like-mindined individuals who have all chosen not to PVP and not to be in danger of PVP, even in the most notorious of PVP hotspots, in the most PVP vulnerable ships engaging in the most PVP attracting activities....

What you are asking for is literallly called 'Private Group' in the log in menu.
Private group with unlimited player number and ENFORCED rules.

Yes. All that. With randoms. Randoms in the sense of: unrestricted, open to everyone. From hot Brazilian dancer to arctit polar Finns.

When I want to play with gankers, and I do occasionally, though not in a few months at this point, I play in open, otherwise I stick to PG with friends.

It would be great if I could make friends in open doing the things I want to do in the ships I want to do them in, but my experience, over and over again, has taught me that is not possible without gankers...over and over again...

Lets think about somewhat analytically, current players open do it for short list of reasons: 1. PVP, consensual or not. 2. Having that additionally challenge, from pvp'ers. 3. Meeting random people, and perhaps getting new friends, or at least coop pve teammates. 4. Noobs who really don't know.

Ok Open-PVE or unlimited group would hit that category 3 people. 1&2 would remain, likewise 4.. Of course people in cat 3 and 4 provide most of non consensual PVP targets. For example no fun in trolling people who ARE there to be trolled.

It's not odd at all. Tiberius' is a good suggestion that achieves what the OP says they want to achieve, without penalising PVP'ers by drastically changing the way they interact with people they meet in game, and without having FDev invest considerable resources in making a change that for almosteveryoneonvolved will havelittle to no perceivable difference to their game.
Whether it is called a "Private Group with no membership limit and enforced rules" or "Open-PvE" the result would be the pretty much the same - players who prefer PvE (and specifically not PvP) would have somewhere to play with as many like-minded players as possible.

In what way would effectively removing PvP completely for players who choose to play that way "have little to no perceivable difference to their game"?

Perhaps our dark jedi thinks about Open with PVP toggle, so that you would actually see those untouchable ships in current Open. That would needlessly irritate people.
