To Solo Play Players: If You Could Disable PVP, Would You Play in Open Play Mode Instead?

I've also come to the conclusion that the problem many players have with the open mode is that by playing in open you consent to PvP combat..
For some, the issue is that Frontier don't offer an Open PvE game mode for players who don't want to engage in PvP to be able to play co-operatively with other players without being bothered by those who can choose to shoot at anything they instance with in either of the multi-player game modes.

Recent stats indicate that the vast majority of players don't get involved in PvP (which corroborates a statement by one Dev, some years ago), yet both multi-player game modes are PvP enabled.

Open play: PvE (you will not be able to harm other players in any way unless you ask and consent to a fight, like in Borderlands, for example).
Do you have a viable proposal for ramming damage and especially people griefing others by pushing them off the landing pad while they are trying to land?

Yes, I feel sorry for the people that are practically banished into different PGs because they don't want PvP combat! I'd imagine that they'd really like to have an open PvE mode, and I'd suggest that the game is poorer for not having such a mode. But this is just my personal view, and quite possibly very misaligned with how FDev envisions the game.

I was over MMOs when I beta tested Eve Online.

Solo FTW.

Oh, I like to have my friends/family fly with me - when we can instance together (few and far between).
I like seeing other commanders - except when I am in a stripped down ship coming in from exploring.
I like the "realism" of having space murder hobos as a "real" threat - oh, wait... no I don't.
Git Gud - why should I have to put up with all this extra kafuffle when I can do my own thing, like the promos all said

It's as if Frontier realised that some players would abuse the ability to obstruct players in a PvE environment and designed out the ability.
Yes I agree.. I find it kind of ironic that they implemented cooperative PvE (with close to no gameplay) and quite neatly solved the PvP combat problem. No weapons deployable, ghosting and they even teleport you to your seat on a FC so that you can't even block others gameplay.. I even praise the Brebus that they disabled bunny jumping, as far as I'm concerned they could even disable running... :)

Though I must say that if it's really 0g in the stations, then I'd love being able to jump and float across space to get to where I want to go..

The idea people would be hanging around just to murder passer’s by when you’ve only got a sheet of tin between you and the most hostile environment imaginable, is nonsense.

Piracy would happen for sure - I’m confident my mining Cutter can hold it’s own against someone who’s got to carry hatchbrakers and cargo racks - but flying an expensive dedicated combat ship solely to murder people for s-and-giggles? It’s the sort of thing that would only happen in a game.
It happens in game because players are immortal and there are no long term consequences for their actions - every negative status can be washed away in relatively little time.

How would you stop two players landing on the same pad at the same time?
If player damage is disabled that would also include ramming damage between players. As for people pushing you off landing pads, that could be solved by disabling player collision in those areas. Perhaps when your docking request is granted, collision with you from other players is disabled.

There would be no issue with landing pads either because the station designates pads one per commander.

Yeah, and as long as the C&P is so weak, people will choose to avoid Open. Which is a shame as I’d love to see just how many Pythons are at Sirius Atmospherics. There’s always loads of chat, but everyone is in solo.
I doubt that C&P could ever be made a strong enough deterrent to persuade all players to play in Open - as even the most draconian C&P will not dissuade particular players from engaging other players in unwanted PvP.

Don't forget the effects of the bad instancing.. It's not enough to jump to the same place in open, you have to actively work with team invites to hopefully get everyone into the same instance.

One would presumably have docking permission?
Fair point, however it would still be quite something to see the station firing on a ship that's inside another ship, both on the same pad, one with landing permission the other without. Can't see it happening myself, especially when PGs already exist and can cater to a variety of needs.

Because Frontier doesn't use AWS TURN servers to bridge randoms. They are expensive. By using a wing you declare the non-randomness of the encounter, hence the necessity of a TURN server.

If one of the lot has a dedicated ipv4 address and forwarded ports, then this shouldn't be necessary.

No, somehow I can't see it happening either.. But I suspect that the people concerned would happily trade some inconsistencies for the ability to play together without consenting to PvP..

It's funny I remember Braben talking about the open mode and how he thought that non consensual PvP would be a rare occurrence.. :) And who knows maybe it is. Still it isn't much fun to watch your fully loaded T-9 explode at a CG, just because you chose open and some random commander thought it would be fun to watch you go boom..
