UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

Yeah, it was just research materials or something similar to that.

Might be worth rechecking though, this was in beta, obviously all you need is a cargo scanner.

edit: yeah sole hunter = troll. Came in about 6-7 months ago pretending he knew the answer to the UA, claims he'd hacked the client, of course he was unable to deliver and in the end was more of a hindrance than a help due to some folk taking him on his word.

And as I remember it all started to get a bit heated when people in this forum were choosing not to follow his "theories" with a mod eventually stepping in (twice I think). Obviously none of this was helpful.

The mods stepped against me only once and my first original post was edited because it contained bits of information and offsets which I shouldn't have posted and I got a warning for it so that's on me and I admit it. They even messaged me afterward because some people got angry and questioned my move but that's fine I get the blame for that one.

I however never made any claims that I knew more than what was already in the game. I simply offered my own theories and perspective which is what most of you "who are quick on bashing me" do as well most of the time so I don't see why you need to call me a troll because between you and me you lack proper understanding and don't take the time to read properly. I obviously may come as obscure and troll'ish in my behaviors and how I post but that's how I stay in character. At least I always offer somewhat of a "baseline" for my theories and don't come up with ridiculous stuff that has nothing to do with how the game mechanics work which is what some of you guys do but that's fine and I don't care because I sometime do it as well. You don't like it? fine, just ignore it and move on there are plenty of people who rep me.

You'd be surprised how many people actually message me in private chat and keep telling me how some of the people here like to pretend and assume as if "they've" (few individuals) put themselves in charge as the authority of what goes on (quoting someone from my PM's, not my own words). I have literally 3 pages of people sending me the same exact feedback every once in a while after I make a comment. As much as there are many people who like what you guys do there are as many people who don't contribute or tend to stay away from any discussions with you guys due to these concerns.

On a side note : I'm pretty sure discussing the user (me) and baiting me into an argument and making inflammatory comments towards an individual is against the forums rules so who's trolling here?

So please respectfully cry me a river.

- If a dozen UAs are placed in a group- are there wave patterns discerned in their group transmissions? Are they synced?

Version 1.4.
I jettisoned a large amount of UA twice:
1) 6 UAs in space.
2) 10 UAs inside the station.

They are not synchronized, the sounds overlap each other and all this cacophony of sounds is very LOUD.

But I have not recorded or analyzed their sounds.

neliodv, I think you must've just got lucky with that probable UA convoy... I've been dropping into every signal source I can find, and nothing like that has happened.

I'm not a big fan of file trawling and general hackery but has anyone tried fixing the typo in the file name?
This is probably NOT a good idea. We don't yet know where the Barnacles are supposed to appear. Best case scenario, renaming the folder crashes your game. Worst case, it simply prevents the barnacles from appearing, preventing you from ever finding them.

On the topic of searching the galaxy, I've added Jellyfish Nebula to my list.
Which is:
NGC 7822
Dumbbell
Spirograph
WitchHead
Sadr
Veil Nebula West
Cone
Barnard's Loop(and the nebulae near there)

A second look in any of these sectors would be very helpful in case I missed something. Especially near Barnard's Loop.

To re-explain why I am doing this. The Meta-Alloy mission text says they are found on a planet. The description says they are only found in space. I assume this was meant to imply Deep Space(outside the bubble of civilization) on a planet.
You must be able to reach the area, acquire the Meta-Alloy(s), and return within the mission time limit of 6 days. So I'm guessing less than 10kly out.
Nebulae serve as great way points or beacons, from a gameplay standpoint. Due to their visibility on the Galaxy Map and in game.

Checking HIP 15609, near star a strong source signal, with 4 T9, 1 T7, and another strong source signal with T9, Anaconda, several Vultures, speaking: "Have you asked what this thing is? All i got told was don't ask. Sheesh, transport out", and another dialogs
Very interesting. There was speculation about whether the UA transports were still around since 1.4, when it became quite easy to find them in the 'shell'.
There has even been a Biscuit Barrel Run to try to find those transports, but none were spotted.
This seems to suggest they are still out there, though without the cargo scanned, we can't call it confirmed. Might be interesting to follow them once more.

Hi. For those searching in Orion, I have a personal feeling about it, although it might be crap.

See my original post on this:
I'm sure this has been commented already, but throwing it in here just in case... I definitely didn't read the whole thread here to check...

Pleiades
Half sisters of the Hyades. Seven sisters converted into stars by Artemis to protect them from Orion.

Merope
The youngest daughter of the Pleiades, and often called the “lost Pleiad”. She was the only one to marry a mortal, thus becoming one herself and lived on the island Chios. She was attacked by Orion.

Orion
The great hunter, slayer of animals. Pursued by Mother Earth with a giant scorpion after he threatened to kill all animals on Earth. Blinded by Oenopion after he attempted to attack Merope. He pursued the Pleiades, amazed by their beauty. After the Pleiades where converted into stars, Zeus made Orion into a constellation so he could keep on pursuing them in the sky.
In some cultures the Orion Constellation is seen as the home of the demons.

Now I know that the connection with Greek Mythology has been done before, although I think to remember that it was discarded with the thought that Thargoids don't have any reference to this. But it is very strange in my opinion that out of 400 billion stars, Merope is the chosen one.

Merope is between the Pleiades the only one that became mortal, thus represents in my mind humanity better than anyone.

The star Merope seems to be a relay for the UA's, be it to send or to receive, so it is plausible to think that there has to be another star somewhere sending and receiving as well, basically the counterpart.

Orion has a direct mythological connection to the Pleiades, especially to Merope. The Pleiades is basically between the bubble and Orion (more so Orion Dark Region). It would make sense for having the relay between the receiver and your target, and would not make sense to have it on the other side of the bubble, so basically Orion lies in the right quadrant.

Someone said that you can't see stars in the barnacle's images, and thus there might be a dark region nearby (Orion Dark Region?).

So, these are my thoughts. I don't want to throw anyone off track in case this is crap, so decompose and destroy it if needed be.

Regards

If Merope is a communications relay, it needs a counterpart. A star probably that sends and/or receives information. It needs to be in the same quadrant, and ideally would have something to do with Merope/Pleiades, so I see Orion as a strong candidate. But where to look in there?

Just yesterday I started to look at the Orion's Belt. It consists of three stars, with 2 of them classified as blue super giants. Alnitak is not too far away, but I found most intriguing the middle star, Alnilam (found in-game as Epsilon Orionis). This star is around 2k out of Sol, but is a blue super giant and lies in the right quadrant. It is also one of the brightest stars in the sky.

I will try to get out there to check, but these days are horrible with the holidays and I only have 5 days and 6 hours left in my mission timer, so let's see...

Destructible test was done here:

UA dropped on Merope 2D,
unrecoverable due to terrain.

Coords:

UA just destroyed itself.

That was dropped from ship.

Have the UAs only be found on the edge of this 'shell' around Merope (130 - 140 LJ) or also inside it (<140 LJ)?

I also left UA in the crater on Merope 1a.

Could someone please check this crater?

A sweet, these spots may be a good place to do POI now then.
And perhaps bring a Meta-alloy mission to see if that increases the chance of getting a special POI there.
The question is when if so, how long do we need to wait.

Good work. o7

Mine was dropped from SRV and just rolled down the hill.
Should have been intact.

A quick summary of misc random test while in Maia with a UA.
We had two ideas for the final tests:
a) Destruct: Destroy on ground, and hope that a 'seeding' took place. Need to be revisited later, in days / weeks to recheck if something happens.
b) Non-Destruct: Leave it intact on ground, for the 'game to despawn it', perhaps 'permanently seeding' the location. Need to be revisited later, in days / weeks to recheck if something happens.
Option b was chosen.

The coords:
Maya A 2 B
-10.0493,-10.8135

Other tests conducted:

System-map sound testing
Checking System-map for audible clues, both while on planet, while in subspace and from a different system. Tried locking on to the location and listen for 'unexpected sounds'.
Nothing out of the ordinary in system map nor while tuning in to the planet + system from either.
Video in this post: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=195658&p=3347247&viewfull=1#post3347247
Same tests done with Galaxy-map, nothing out of the ordinary detected.

Drop test from ship, 70m above ground.
- UA degraded as expected from a ship ejection.
- Picked up with SRV, re-ejected. Degaradation stopped as expected.
- One wingmember noticed 100% health on UA. I noticed 99% health (after drop from SRV). I jumped out of system and came back. UA health was still 99% for me when I returned, (while wingman sat there watching it so it didn't despawn).
This indicates that the state of the UA is persistent, even if it shows different attribute values to wingmembers.

I'll attach the video later, altough the sound from the mic is pretty poor at stages it may be of value to get an idea of the UA soundscope in these situations.

Have the yoyager probes been found again? I've found a vid from you on YT, but I'm not able to open it. I only knew that both probes have been disappearing some time ago...

Yes, I think I saw some comments on the voyagers quite a few pages back. (20 to 200 .. yeah I know).
Did you mean the video there is 'unavailable'? Could please you pm me on youtube / here, I'd like to check why it's unavailable (germany perhaps?).
I'll see if I can search the thread, I may be wrong but was it RedWizzard that had rechecked them a while ago.

Ah, hold on:
September then, but at least you have some instructions there as well.

Hello CMDRs!
Last night I scooped an UA and dropped it in the darkest Canyon, on the darkest side of a pretty nice moon of the UA shell.
You should really try it yourself, the UA glowing in the dark is something to see for sure: its green and purple halos light up all the surroundings in a very peculiar way.

Moreover I had a final confirmation to the UA morseing the planet's name, and not decaying, after being dropped by my SRV.
If dropped from my ship, it started dacaying and morseing my ship's drawing.

I then killed it with my SRV repeater until its scream echoed in the night.

Here's the amazing video, for your amusement: UA by night.

About the meta-alloys mission, mine is still active: I'm still going up'n down the Galaxy, with or without UA, but no Barnacle POI so far. :(

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZfKzhRIMvQ

Thank Riz, that was really quite interesting. I replayed the death scene several times & noticed what appears to be a "spike" of energy that results in a green cloud about two metres behind the "tail". I wonder if this is the "space barnacle" "seeding" mechanism & the UA has to expire while stood on its tail to seed the ground-makes sense on a rocky world so the seeds/larvae penetrate the rock. This spike has been observed before when UAs have expired in space- is there a directional preference for the spike?

I have seen a couple of videos with a UA balanced on its tail & rotating, so a couple of experiments if anyone's interested (I'm thinking this experiment might be best on a metal-rich moon):
1) can a UA be balanced on the ground on its bulbous "head" end? If so see what happens (Earth barnacles clamp onto the ground), & if nothing after a while kill it & then observe for a while longer
2) balance a UA on the ground on its tail & kill it
3) recently UAs have been reported moving towards moons, so monitor how they behave during terminal approach to the moon's surface (which end do they preferentially land on?), observe it, & if nothing happens then kill it.

In all cases capture the video so we have a record of the behaviour & the coordinates If this is the seeding method then after a while maybe we'll see a "space barnacle"??

Edit: And before I get remarks that this is bad science & we have no evidence to support any such linkage between UAs and Space Barnacle or Meta-alloys, I think I should point out that this is conjecture based on the hypothesis that they are related. This is not bad science, it is the way science works! Perhaps we should have a link to the wikipedia explanation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method) of the Scientific Method on our thread first page(s) :D

@ Cmdrs Paraszt & PanPiper

How is your hunt for the location of the Horizons release trailer going? It came to mind because I've just been taking part in the Personal Gifts to Clauss Port CG & noticed that at the supply end of the route Njambalba has Barnard's Loop & 2 other nebulae quite visible in the sky. I think from their apparent size that this is not far enough out from the galaxy centre to be the trailer location, but it struck me that in setting the CG there FD might be giving out a hint to look out in that direction. Just interested in your progress!

If comfirmed, this could be the first UA Convoy spotted in a very long time!
This could support the theory that some of the infected stations, and Warkushanui is the first that comes to mind, are infected by this activity. This thing needs further inspection, remembering that the odds of spotting an UA convoy could be VERY low, if the spawn rate is the same as in 1.2.
HIP 15609 is on my list. I should check the map to see if it is close to the old spawning locations (ex. TIMOCANI)

I'm just on the way back from NGC 7822 and didn't see anything out of the ordinary there within the S171 cluster but I may head that way again in a week or so as I need to get back and repair my hull. I'll wait until FD have confirmed the Barnacle error is fixed first before going out again for a more thorough look. All there was in space was salvageable wrecks with survey data.

About point 3: I'm away from my gaming computer until the end of the week, so this is not firsthand knowledge, but from what I understand the UA drifts towards the planet at about 7m/s, so it would probably take anywhere from weeks to months of following a UA, depending of distance to the planet, for it to reach the planet surface. So I doubt it's an experiment that we can do in-game, but I'm happy to be corrected.

About the Barnacle/UA/Meta-alloy/Planetside mysterious structure linkage, I agree with you %100. It's perfectly good science to postulate they are one and the same and then test that hypothesis. All I've done in the past is raise a flag when I've seen someone referring to them in a way that could lead others to believe that it's known or universally accepted that they indeed are the same. So science away commander! :)
