Here ya go:

edit: wait, is moon/planet a distinction FD/ED makes? They've consistently called all bodies you can land on 'planets', right?

Binary planets are indicated by lines that goes up from both of them and connects, moons are indicated by a line that goes down from the planet.

Well the narrow's it down to a 10-degree square area then :p

So perhaps we can narrow the search down to planets with something like 14% metal, ~297K and 0.18G ?

everything but the temp. 0.18G and less than 15% metal.

90% sure that post came out right after Barnacles were confirmed to have been found, it triggered as a result of the finding.

Correct, I saw the Galnet post after I saw the posts for the first discovery.

I just have a feeling that the Galnet post was going to be them throwing us a bone to find a barnacle if one hadnt been found yet (and probably time based). I imagine there's a timeline that FDev wants to proceed with in all these discoveries.

OK so I did some alternative sciencing with the help of Ziggy I quantum leaped to check for spawn consistency here are the results.

(before I forget I apologize to all the people I was pulling a magic act on)

VVV Here is the format VVV

(Instance) - (Number of Players in group) - (Barnacle spawn while in SRV?) - (Barnacle spawn while in Ship?)

Open - All - Yes - Yes
Mobius - 17732 - Yes - Yes
Group 1 - 207 - No - No
Canonn - 144 - Yes - Yes
Group 2 - 7 - No - No
Solo - 1 - No - No

Should be some good numbers for FD to mull over.

Best moment in testing is in the Mobius group when the Barnacle complex appeared out of nowhere looked/sounded like a huge explosion (shards of spires everywhere) and it dropped in from the sky like a flash... also player ship skins populate just like they do in the preview at outfitting.

Fun stuff but honestly is this a permanent point of interest? if it is not sure the mechanic is working right it should definitely be there in Solo and it isn't.

Found binary planets in Pleiades Sector LX-T B3-0, around 100k Ls from the drop in point. That system is 23,26 Ly away from Maia.
Nice, those were suggested by zero-fill too. I was thinking about going there but... ugh.. that SC travel..

I found the crashed Anaconda from the article (possibly). JC-U B3-2 1.
Coordinates are 20,8659; 91,7340
It seems you're being quite a busy bee! I'll head over there and have a look see :).

@JosephStalin: We dropped a UA on the barnacle. Nothing obvious happened. But we only watched for about 2 minutes to keep the UA from blowing itself up.

Galnet post comes out with coordinates to a barnacle.
Suddenly barnacles are found.
I call shennanigans. I bet a virtual switch got flicked "on" and enabled the appearance of barnacles.
Too coincidental IMO.

It was found before the Galnet post, but less than 24 hrs after the mysterious downtime we had yesterday.
Also, conveniently found by someone who was streaming. I would be a liar if I said I didn't have doubts.

Also for the record I think that clue points to our wonderful HR-1185.

Why?

1. Has Black Hole
2. One of the first free floating UA's have been found here
3. It's about 23ish LY from Maia.

Guess I'll hit it up after work this afternoon.

Great work everyone.

PLEASE can people who are experiencing Barnacles failing to spawn add their experiences of it to my bug report here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=222440&p=3393141#post3393141
The only way an issue can be solved is if it is reported and looked into. It is indeed a permanent point of interest it was working fine for me in Solo mode. It is just bugged ,I had the same thing with the fixed Anaconda wreckage (which is what I filed the bug report about) it seems it is a bug that extends throughout multiple types of fixed POI so could you please mention that you've experienced it with the Barnacles too so it can be fixed? :)

if you are talking about the one on merope 5c, it spawned for me just fine in solo mode. I just had to drive a bit more, turn that scanner back on ;).

Distances for the main Pleiades stars from Maia...
Code:
Alcyone 20.14
Atlas 5.58
Electra 21.51
Maia 0.00
Merope 4.28
Taygeta 25.98
Pleione 5.52
Celaeno 6.42
Sterope 3.33
Asterope 11.45

Taygeta has a set of binary planets, 1 landable. Going there now to have a look. Grav: 0.21G. No volcanism or atmosphere. 68.8% ice, 21.1% rock, 10.2% metal. Not tidally locked.

Yeah, he said it would be easy to know if you were near but it sure isn't. They don't show up on ship radar, they are barely visibly at 1KM altitude and make no sound unless you are right on top of it. People may have been passing right over these things because we expected them to be at least visible from 2KM altitude. They *do* emit a different sound on the wave scanner though. It is a deeper tone than a small POI of gold. Still though, they are barely recognizable.
I was going to post this stupid spoof image... but then an actual Barnacle was found... so, here it is anyways... please enjoy my stupid picture.

It was supposed to be based on MB's quote about how it should be apparent when you are near one... or something.

Calling employees of Frontier liars on our forums is a swift way to getting your access to these forums completely revoked. This is the only public warning I'm going to give regarding these sort of posts. We do not tolerate harassment of employees on our forums.

Post respectfully and constructively, and we won't have issues.

Thank you.

While I absolutely agree, it is also painful to think about how many hours were collectively wasted by CMDRs searching for barnacles in SOLO play. They simply aren't there, and many of us (me included) conducted hour after hour of search in SOLO.

Apart from SOLO, I also never get the barnacle site to spawn in my own group (WOODHOUSE).
