Universe Wide Chat... Why Is It Not A Thing?

I'll tell you why it's not a thing.

1) Log into WOW
2) Spend more than 5 minutes on Trade Channel or General Chat
3) Gouge your eyes out because you would be better off blind than seeing that useless garbage

well to be fair i do that only thinking about wow , let alone log in

This was one of my original "must have" features.. but once I saw the IN SHIP UI and the lack of any sort of mouse interface I knew it was doomed.

There won't ever be a chat feature or any form of real UI in the game. Sorry..

Might have been mentioned elsewhere, a solar system wide chat even when having dropped out of SC would be nice. A CMDR hailed me while I was dropping out of SC. No way to reply. (and no intention to return to SC).
ps: Sorry CMRD in the Vulture around the Cayutorme system. I have been in my ASP, CMDR Ray Mobula. Next time ;)

It's probably been mentioned in this post (I haven't read the whole topic) I don't think a 'universe or global' chat would benefit the game, however, a station chat i'd be more than happy with, not even system, just station.

Not that I'd use it in any way or form BUT... Science has advanced in ED's future to let us fly amongst the stars but no one thought to work on and advance communications/radio/comms/morse code/whatever you wish to call it. I find that MORE immersion breaking!!!

Agghhh... I really have enough of all this people on forum that says:

"I dont want a player owned stations" Fine ! Dont buy one - simple ?

"I dont want a players guilds mechanic" Fine ! Dont play in guild - simple ?

"I dont want a General Chat" Fine ! Turn it off - simple ?

.... and all they have to say is that implementing these features will ruin their game immersion ... ?

Um...actually...anyone who knows physics will tell you that we already have faster than light transmission of information. It's called quantum entanglement.

Um...actually....I must apologise for reading your post in this guy's voice. It helped with my immersion.

... if players like you and gluttonyfang want to sit in the dark and play by yourselves, then you have that option, but other players who would like to have the global chat, there is no option.

Gluttonyfang and I are each others nemeses.... nemesisis....nemeses'.....er.. whatever.... so we don't play by ourselves!! How dare you make such an insinuation. You sir, a cad and a scoundrel.

None-the-less, my dear friend, thank you for being the spokesperson for all the other players. Now I have sad-face, because "there is no option". :(

Anyway, I looked up that quilted mangling thing you mentioned - and it would appear that you're right ... and Google, Wikipedia, Steven Hawkbling ... and that black science guy are all wrong.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm more of a medicine kinda guy ... this science stuff bores me. More pew pew, please. ;)

Major faction chat - fine (perhaps only after some ability to pledge becomes available though)
Sub-faction chat - fine (same as above, would have to be a pledge system first, like powerplay)
Powerplay chat - fine
Systemwide chat - ugh... ok.
Friendslist chat - fine
Private Group wide chat - fine
Global chat - hells no.

I mean, they would all have to be optional toggles. Nobody wants to see continuous spam.

But global chat - everything i've ever seen or heard about global chat just makes it a joke. I have no idea why people think its a good idea unless they have never experienced gobal chat channels before. People speaking in a dozen different languages, spam, 14 year olds explaining what they did to someone's mother. How on earth can any of that be useful to anyone i have no idea!

But there is a possible technical issue lurking here.

As we all know, the game uses P2P for a lot of its networking. One would presume chat also uses P2P. So, currently, when you are chatting with someone, its a 1 to 1 way connection. Let's now look at local chat around a busy station. That's at max a 32 to 32 way connection. Each person who speaks is sending to up to 32 clients.

Now, global chat, where you poor network needs to be aware of thousands of client addresses to send to and create thousands of connections every time you want to send "LOL"... that's going to play merry hell with your network as making so many simultaneous connections is just going to fry your network card/router.

The "obvious" answer then is have comms route via a central server. That's extra cost on FDs side. Extra cost to enable random players to inform other random players about various aspects and states of their anatomy. I'm not sure FD are going to be interested in catering to that.

So you say faster than light travel is possible (sidewinder), but not communication ?

Anyway :

"However, some argue that superluminal communication could be achieved via quantum entanglement using other methods that don't rely on cloning a quantum system.[clarification needed] One suggested method would use an ensemble of entangled particles to transmit information,[4] similar to a type of quantum eraser experiments where the observation of an interference pattern on half of an ensemble of entangled pairs is determined by the type of measurement performed on the other half.[5][6][7] In these cases, though, the interference pattern only emerges with coincident measurements which requires a classical, subluminal communication channel between the two detectors.[citation needed] Physicist John G. Cramer at the University of Washington is attempting to perform one type of these experiment and demonstrate whether or not it can produce superluminal communication"

edit: .... and Agony_Aunt dont want global chat , ok - he is resonable saying why not, we should discuss not just state " i dont want it coz i dont like it"

The ships in Elite can travel the whole galaxy by having this weird future amazing capability to bend space time and therefore relocate at faster than light speeds. That kind of is the premise for Elite to work.

How would you explain the physics of a galaxy wide instant communication, since the electromagnetic waves of your communication would have to bent certain physical dimensions as well. And this would be a bit of a deal breaker for me because:

If you can send instant signals to anywhere in the galaxy, the manned spaceships would be redundant. At least for the remote activities (exploration), the dangerous activities (combat, pirating) and the trading piloting. All that would be much effectively and cheaper done with drones piloted from a chair in a futuristic communication center. The only valid profession would almost be passenger transport (which isn't implemented yet).

But hey it is a game, and with the Facebook generation and all, I suppose it is something that they will bring sometime.

Instant signals must be possible. How else do you explain npc interdictions in uninhabited space. They always say something like "the rumors were true".

I was gonna say - Fine, as long as it's optional. But I agree with this ^^.

Quantum Communications

There is Absolutely No Reason for Communications to be limited to the Speed of Light in the Elite Unverse/Time Frame...

It is quite possible that Quantum Communications will be cracked in Our Lifetime or that of our Children or Grandchildren... Thereby allowing Instantaneous Comms across our Solar System if not the Galaxy...

Here is a Snippet of info written for the Average Joe:
https://chrispacia.wordpress.com/2013/09/13/a-glimpse-of-the-future-quantum-computers-teleportation-and-superluminal-communication/

There are Numerous Technical Papers available explaining the Scientific Theroy if you want to read in more detail...

But maybe we shouldn’t resign ourselves to only light-speed communication just yet. In the bizarro world of quantum mechanics, it seems as if anything is possible. As we mentioned, with quantum entanglement any change to the state of one of the entangled pairs causes an instantaneous change to the other. The mind-blowing part of quantum entanglement is that information can be transmitted from one half of the pair to the other no matter how much distance is between the photons. This phenomenon has been confirmed in experiments. If it were possible to encode one half of the entangled pair with information, you could theoretically transmit that information instantaneously to the other half of the pair. We could have one of the entangled photons here on Earth and the other on Mars and use them to communicate in real time. How is it possible that the information regarding a change to the state of one photon could be transmitted faster than light? I have no idea. Physicists are still working this stuff out.

Overall I support the idea of adding a Full Chat Suite as a Tab in our Comms Panel.
Setup in such a way to be Configurable by the Pilot. Allowing System, Multi System, Intra Galactic and perhaps Pilot Defined Channels... Or Turned Off Completely...

Happy Hunting!

I want more than just a galaxy wide chat.

I want dynamic Galnrt info based on current system statistic sent via push notification to a commander's cockpit.

We need information delivered to us, not a research project every time we want some current game info.

I don't have an hour a day just to fly around the galaxy to see what the conflict zone status is. I also don't have time to do 15 hops just to find out the conflict zone is gone.

Real time info please.
