Update 10 - Odyssey and Horizons

calm down, in my view both you and obiw have a good reputation in writing good and helpfull comments. and both of you have valid points, in my view patch10 is one of the better ones, but still not really good. i agree to your point, ed offers enough gaming variations to avoid introduced bugs, but i also share the frustration that frontier still has not implemented a QA or created some testing procedures before releasing a patch. hope that your assumption comes true and they use todays downtime to fix the SRV scooping stuff.

I think this assumes all QA can be completed before the update meets the live server. If - for example - something in the netcode causes a ping delay and you drive over a material, your QA tested client might be working fine but since it didn't get a ping that you have the material, it can't be removed from the planet yet or put into your cargo space. Example.

Our client updates are forward facing, they're the bit we see but it seems very possible to me - in fact probably quite likely - that the servers get just as many hotfixes behind the scenes as the client does and there's a dance going on between front and back end updates that sometimes takes a couple of days to settle down.

Either way it's not constructive to pillory devs for development, if anything it can make things worse if they get into rushing fixes. It's clearly important for them to get the game running well, a very real bottom line to their actual employment. Of course they have a QA department but they'd need 50,000 staff to test the game to the extent players do, across hundreds of thousands of systems, planet, base, faction rep and state combinations.

The problem is the bugs that effect all player, in all situations create the impression that no testing is occurring, I am sure that they are testing before release. High pings and other networking issues could easily be replicated for their test servers, and it is obvious that there are problems with the testing procedure with these universal bugs getting through. At the moment many player are jaded with the state of Odyssey since release, which has improved no end and I find enjoyable. But I am finding it difficult to remain positive when each update produces these significant bugs, because it is hard to see the improvements made when you have to work round the bugs first. As I said earlier first impressions count.

Thanks to the Dev's and CM's for all your work, I report bugs to help with development, not to rant or personally criticise.

Greetings Commanders,

Post-Odyssey updates have reached double digits! In this round, we see a series of optimisation improvements and a large batch of fixes. At the time of this post (10:00 GMT/UTC), servers will go offline for approximately two hours while the update deploys.

Changes will come to both Odyssey and Horizons each listed in their own sections below. These will see some overlap in cases where certain changes are happening in both versions.

Odyssey

Optimisation
The following features have received optimisation improvements:
  • Looking at/through glass
  • Cockpit glass
  • Galaxy and System Map functionality
  • Avatar decals
  • Forward lit VFX
  • Planet fine textures
  • Shadows
  • Emissive rescaling

Rendering
  • An issue causing artifacting on the local view in the System Map was fixed

  • Polyporous growths on brain trees can be splattered once again
  • An issue with teammate Navlock was fixed
  • Deposit fragments will no longer get stuck inside asteroids
  • Damage values on thermal conduits have been corrected to scale with ship heat between 90-150%, capped at 160%

AI
  • AI will spawn at POIs in multicrew as expected
  • Omnipol corruption was addressed: their mission-givers will no longer assign illegal missions
  • Deceased NPCs can be scanned once again at offline settlements.
  • Hostile ships will once again appear as such on the radar

Settlements

  • Midnight Black paint jobs were adjusted

Interactions
  • Gravity will be re-enabled at Guardian Sites so that caskets no longer float
  • A quantum-physics issue allowing multiple players to collect the same item was fixed

Factions
The Pirate Attack faction state will now:
  • No longer trigger when only criminal factions are present in a starsystem
  • Temporarily make weapon commodities legal in most jurisdictions
  • Cause factions to lose influence to criminal factions present in that starsystem
  • Criminal factions will no longer experience active security states and their Security Points will lock at 0
  • Odyssey settlements controlled by criminal factions will now prefer to export commodities (at the usual favourable pricing) that are illegal in other jurisdictions. Their exports will return to normal if control changes to other faction types
  • Odyssey settlements that were incorrectly exporting Meta Alloys will no longer do so
  • Incorrectly negative faction consequences when selling salvaged commodities for a relatively low value were fixed
  • The Black Market station service will now activate when the controlling faction has an active Civil Unrest state
  • Faction consequences from selling commodities are now based on satisfying available demand at the Commodity Market
  • You can now support a faction by buying commodities from it, based upon satisfying available supply at its Commodity Market
  • When buying and selling, it's generally more positive to a faction to satisfy a higher supply and demand (green 3-bar icon) than a lower (red 1-bar icon), and it's generally more positive to trade more expensive commodities than cheaper ones

The wait for Odyssey on Consoles is nearing double digits too, pal!

Maybe if Frontier cared to actually offer some form of an update on this, eh?

FDev,

"Midnight Black paint jobs were adjusted"

...but now it looks a lot like Tactical Graphite, making me regret spending the ARX. Please put it back the way it was.

Cheers,
CMDR Therion Cygni
Seriously? They've broken the Midnight skin, one of the very few actually cool and useful skins in game, on which many players spent real money? Are they actively trying to find new things to break at this point?

I mean, they can't. Consoles can't have EDO until the performance is fixed on PC - because consoles are at best a low end CPU with a mid tier GPU.

And I'm not sure FDev know how much work is involved in fully fixing the performance. It has been getting better, but it's not on par with games that have similar visual complexity yet, and it's anyone's guess as to how long that will take.

People call bugs game breaking presumably because it breaks the game for them.

This I'm Alright Jack attitude of some is sad to see. Don't you want the game to be better than that?
Of course most of us want the game to get better it is just a reaction to the perceived misuse of the term. What are they going to call something that really breaks the game not just a bit of it, a game Annihilating Bug?
Constantly and each and every time there's a new patch out it breaks something new and random.

This really is not normal and just saying "just ignore it" on a feedback thread isn't useful. Just keep stumm at least if you don't care.
The truth is that unfortunately this is normal in Elite much as we wish it weren’t.

Too long already.
Looks like they're completely ignoring folks who thoroughly inspect things and have made observations on rendering, finding unfathomable complexity & multiple calls to draw something that's not even visible to the player.
I feel sorry for those folks who spent a lot of time and effort investigating and documenting the issues and even provide possible solutions without those posts ever getting sufficiently acknowledged one way or another from official sources beyond "thanks will take a look" and then never mentioned again.

Thankless task if you ask me and I'm surprised people still bother - fair play to them though for trying at least.

Odyssey does the lighting differently and some of the good looking paints from Horizons were very disappointing, the fix has not broken Midnight Black it just hasn’t fixed it fully.

Sure, from a developer perspective that doesn't necessarily qualify it as game-breaking technically speaking (like CTDs or bugs auto-wiping accounts), but should that really matter to the disgruntled customer? Getting annoyed with a continuously broken product is no good when the product is supposed to entertain you.

Especially when it's as systemic of a problem as it is here. I'd be a LOT more lenient and forgiveable if these issues occurred less often, but it's a meme at this stage what (multiple things) the next patch breaks. Fix one bug, create two new ones, eventually resulting in a death by a thousand needles.

Yes, I think it's much more a problem with the lighting system they use than the skins themselves (in this case at least). I checked MNB again last night in a tourism station (the one with palm trees) and it looked almost exactly like it should be. The problem is, in the majority of situations where the lighting is different it still doesn't, and now looks worse than before in terms of colour saturation (light to medium grey all the way to solid black). Same applies to the Chromed/Golden skins, they can look from absolutely stunning to drab and dull. Not great considering they're 5.5k a pop.

I think the lighting still has major issues in EDO.

I've flown a standard white iCourier since it was gifted away. In some lighting conditions it looks anything but white..

I can confirm guardian wreckage parts are no longer floating ... BUT YOU CAN NOT GRAB THEM FROM THE GROUND!!!!
Tried it several times without success :-(

Anyone else having this issue since update 10?

Opened an issue here: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/47416
If someone has same issues please refer to this issue to get it noticed and hopefully repaired with next update.

THX to all Cmdrs

Hello! So sorry, just playing some catch up today after spending a day yesterday behind the scenes.
I've grabbed the issue tracker ticket (grateful it's in) but I also noted it the other day too. Looking into it o7 thank you!

Heyyyy I'm back from uninstalling the game and redownload just in case some miracle would happen and I wouldnt crash to desktop immediately upon seeing the main menu since U10! I am glad to see that even win 10 people are having the problem, now you got all the windows rainbow that can have this problem! Idk why either some new fluke with the graphics as it's loading in and the game dies as it's streaming the textures in, or maybe something with the netlogs! Compared some netlogs and something weird idd is happening!

So just for shiggles, anyone know which config file to hit and double check if my 5100 port is still open? Im saying this again, jjust for shiggles. I might as well play with the files. I'm getting a little triggered I can't click on omnipols and the scoop bug makes me envious because I don't care about scooping! Anyone wanna switch spots and ctd right after booting the game and seeing the main menu? No???? Dang it. Why do they always refuse to swtch to the worse spot for no benefit at all!

Back to splattering everything in Streets of Rogue I guess!
