Update 13, Narrative and Access to 4.0

Well, there goes my ability to play the game, or to have actually interesting planets - now it's visibly repeatable landscapes and crap features... in addition to game performance loss so bad, I guess it will be a nice SLIDESHOW to load up now and then.

I don't need the game performance and UI downgrade to Odyssey's code base. I'd prefer to keep my fully working version of the game, kthx.
You might want to read some more of the comments here before you accept complete doom...moving to 4.0 client is optional...

so long as they have "valid" customers on this 3.8 branch, they wont succeed in any of the goals they noted for why they wanted to bring 4.0 to horizons. Like none of them. Because they can't make the narrative only work for some players in different versions of the client.

The status quo we're in now remains exactly the same as after this change if 3.8 remains for players. The only upside i can see for this is that you can ease players in horizons into this new codebase and have time to make fixes there before making it mandatory since they may contain large amount of users who never tested in odyssey. But none of the benefits will be seen (for fdev) until everything is on 4.0. Unless they are really prepared to leave 3.8 players behind yet still let them login/purchase the game.
If you lose 3.8, you lose the remaining console players. Are Frontier ready to grasp that poisoned chalice yet?

The way I read it, that will be the case, that the narrative will only be 4.0 and Ody. They've left console player behind, so they could easily do it to 3.8 players too.

Yeah, you're probably right...

The consoles are presumably at whatever is equal to 3.8 on those platforms until the end of time...so I'm projecting that to PC as well..
Yep, that's what I am thinking, Consoles will (have to, by necessity) remain on 3.8, but able to do Azimuth/Thargoids/storyline (continuing after Salvation SuperWeapon IMHO, BTW)/CG's/PP/BGS/etc.........................until Amazon servers switched off.

<<Thoughts>>......Actually, this could be good news for consoles, as it is enabling them (me included on PS4) to play on!

What do you think?

I think 3.8 won't be included in future developments, it will be moribund until Frontier chooses to shut it down.

See Darth Ender's reply above to the message of mine that you quoted...

If players have the option to run 3.8 or 4.0 then FDev can quite reasonably make 'narrative content' 4.0-only. If you want the narrative, run 4.0.

are they going to stop players who are purchasing new from acquiring 3.8 ? because it seems like if not, that's going to be a pretty big disclaimer they'll have to make sure people know before buying that they're buying a game that is EoL and that only 4.0+ is being supported by any kind of new / ongoing content.

Kinda goes against the whole point fdev dances around to make upgrades to the client not hold any exclusive content central to the game. They're creating exactly that with this option to retain 3.8 ... free or not.

The alignment of the core features in both Horizons and Odyssey is the best thing I have read in years. And this is coming from someone on Odyssey. Great going! o7
Hi all,

We have just published the following article to our news page on the website and encourage you to have a read!

This ☝️

Please bring back the Bio/Geo Planetary POIs for significant concentration of such features
Or fix the general gameplay mechanic of material farming so we don’t NEED such POIs in the first place. Know what I mean?

It's not an "upgrade" to 4.0 as such. Players will have the option to launch in 3.8 or 4.0, whichever they prefer. We'll make this clearer in the post.

4.0 is not required for Update 13 or to experience the conclusion to the Azimuth Saga. Interpretation 2 is more accurate.
Is the reason for keeping the 3.8 branch alive due to the 'modern' 4.0 code still performing so poorly in comparison?

Its great that Horizons is getting the SRV and some of the graphics updates like the UI, even though some of that is a step backwards. I'm glad its being aligned though.

The only thing I would raise is that I really think all planets should be available in Horizons. Afterall Horizons is exporation and Odyssey is space legs.

Odysseys FPS gameplay doesn't appeal to everyone so stuff like the extra planets feels a bit like a hook to get those of us who arent excited by Odysseys content to buy something we don't really want. Its not really worth it though.

Thanks for opening up discussion about the next stages.

Reconciling the rough edges between Horizons and Odyssey is something foremost on my mind. These include but are not limited to:

  • The loading screen and main menu. On Odyssey we still see flickers of the Horizons loading menus and pages, especially after a network error where the gorgeous SRV/station purple shot persists* but surely a future folding-up of Horizons into Odyssey will remove all the extraneous compatibility things and make things more robust and simple?
  • Interface redundancies and incompatibilities - seeing the same notice pop up on the front HUD display and the Odyssey "toaster" for example. Also, quite a few now dated-looking interface elements in the ships now superceded by developments since the original launch to reduce clutter. The work done so far however is promising.
  • Reconciling wearing an Odyssey suit, complete with its own life support system, and the ship's Life Support unit and interactions with the canopy. When life support fails, shouldn't the Odyssey suit take over? On a related note, I still want to be able to shoot a pilot through the blasted hole of a broken canopy and kill the pilot hence neutralising the ship potentially for capture.
  • Similar to the above, something more versatile when it comes to Holo-Me and suit customisation. Bringing in more of the Horizons Holo-Me cosmetics in alignment with Odyssey suit customisation would be amazing. I would love to wear my Horizons shades with my Odyssey stetson again.
There are probably others, but these are some thoughts just now.

* Is this place RAXXLA? You can tell me, I'll keep it a secret. 😜
Running out of “air” has royally ed me off since day 1. Anyone with a simple scuba tank knows you 1) don’t know to the second how much air you have 2) know you won’t run out with a life support system weighing several tons in a ship the size of a building. However, flying through hyperspace in a convertible? Wouldn’t that cook you? I’d rather see that canopy warning called “emergency radiation shield” with a countdown, referencing some kind of protection that you would need. As you say, with Odyssey air makes no sense, but even the suits have temp and radiation limits.

I imagine if you buy Horizons, then you'll get the same options as any other Horizons owner.

all those ganking targets in one galaxy at last. GG FDEV.

I mean, that existed before odyssey for like 7 years and it was readily observed that you can play in open for weeks and not see a single player while staying in the bubble if you avoided a handful of CG or engineering systems. I dont think ad-hoc meetups will change much at all.

this mostly improves the situation for any remaining player groups or community events (not referring to cg's). Assuming the horizons players opt to play 4.0. Which at this point is unlikely as they'd probably have gotten odyssey by now if that was in the cards for them. So that wont likely come to fruition until 4.0 is mandatory.

Why would you run out of air, just synthesize more if you can't make a station in time.

Because they can't make the narrative only work for some players in different versions of the client.
Of course they can - the first Community Goal which required the Horizons as opposed to Basic client to complete it (back when the split was 2.0 versus 1.5) was just two weeks after the 2.0 release. Barnacles - narrative content requiring Horizons - followed not long after, and there was plenty more before the "everyone gets Horizons" merge.

Unless they are really prepared to leave 3.8 players behind yet still let them login/purchase the game.
Why do you think they wouldn't be? They need to keep it running on a "critical fixes only" basis for consoles anyway, but there's nothing they've said which suggests any intent for them to do more than that, and no way to realise the development time savings otherwise.
