Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

One of the things I find interesting is Frontier calling it "modes", when in reality it's two separate games. Horizons 4.0 vs Odyssey feel more like modes, since both are the same code, one just has some things disabled. But as I've said in the past, Horizons 3.8 feels as different from 4.0 as X3 does from X4. Sure, they are very similar (4.0 being an evolution of the 3.8 code), but they are truly two different game installs, and going forward they will be using two different servers. There's no denying that they are truly separate games now.

It's also kinda weird that one of the modes is called "live", as if the other mode was offline. Technically both are live, one just won't be receiving any more updates from Frontier.

I still think the new Horizons / Odyssey game should just be rebranded Elite Dangerous 2, but I'm not a marketer..

I'm PC user and I'm supporting all console users. In short words: Odyssey was crap at release and now is not well finished program. Maybe in FPS/on foot game it is finished enough, but in terms of exploration (my role) it is still buggy enough to repel me from accept new version as main.
Please read the entire discussion. The question was do you need a €2000 PC to run HORIZONS 4.0. The answer to that question is still: Nope.

So, I caved in and decided to try Odyssey through GeForce Now on Xbox and it works surprisingly well. The graphics are pretty bad though, some of the text is hard to read, but overall everything is fairly responsive. So now my question in regards to next week's update. I did a console profile transfer in September and just last night accessed that profile with Odyssey. Since September I have been playing my Xbox profile off/on, so when this split comes am I going to have three profiles? My current Odyssey commander, the mirror of the Odyssey commander in 3.8, and my Xbox profile with the little bit of progress since September?
Yes we will, get everything off the console cmdr(s) and onto the PC cmdr(s), (preferably a carrier).
Post split, credits and commodities can be redistributed from the Legacy account.

I'm RPG single player passionate. Horizon Zero Dawn, Witcher 3 and Dragon Age Inquisition played at high or ulttra graphics settings... but ED is unable to run at this settings, Strange.

Exactly so. Plus, I'd played Horizon Zero Dawn - not sure - something about 720 hours, and did not find any bug - except of german language was sometime a bit out of lip sync.

Imagine if Frontier had, instead of bollocksing up the code bolting on features that broke existing features, in some cases apparently irreparably, focused on building a completely fresh version of the engine built to support these features from the ground up, rather than bodged together with badly tied knots in the spaghetti code. And launched it in 2021 or early 2022 as "Elite Dangerous 2", performing this same full port of the galaxy into the new game on launch.

I take it this is the situation you are facing right now?

If so, I think StuartGT's suggestion is probably the best, start the FC carrier decomissioning process and talk to Frontier about crediting you the FC balance once complete to your PC account. The FC part is just credits at the end of the day, it's the progress/skins etc.. that's most important to bring over.

@Bruce G Would the above be a possible remedy to the situation this CMDR and others are in, regarding the time-frame to decommission Fleet Carriers?
Yep, i don't see the issue in doing this procedure. FDev Support will likely message back "we've seen that you decomm'd your FC from your console account, and so i've deposited XYZ credits to your PC account. Have fun, CMDR o7"

The last game I'd played on PC was BioShock Infinite, while the pc is quite some years older. Plus it has a ATI Video card. Didn't expect GeForce Now would be running at all.
You should look into it. I think the name is confusing as it's not related to having any NVIDIA hardware on your machine. It's their cloud game streaming platform where you can stream games running on cloud machines, I think, up to 4090 quality to any device capable of receiving the video packets to display it, ie; as underpowered as a Chrome Book. It's a paid for service but they have a free trial, and still would be a lot cheaper than paying for an equivalent gaming PC. Buur Pit posted a very informative video about it just recently.

Greetings Commanders,

We have an important announcement to share with regards to future game modes as of Update 14 which is due 29 November! Read all about it on our website and let us know what you think in the comments below:

Thanks for the heads up. Overall sad news as, in my opinion, the spaceflight experience in 3.8 is currently more enjoyable than that of Odyssey/4.0. Fingers crossed future updates bring the same [*relative] polish to Odyssey.

As far as I yesterday heared (from a Cmdr who initiated transfer yesterday) FCs won't be migrated from 3.8 to 4.0 anyway

Hi All :)

One Question, I've got Horizons (Playing on 3.8) and Odyssey, though with my present graphics card Odyssey isn't going to run very well.
With the update 14 does this mean (I presume no) that any new ships after this update will be also available in Horizons 3.8?
If this being the case, then I would think a few players playing the Legacy 3.8 version would like the opportunity to at least have some of the long awaited ships, the Panther Clipper for example plus maybe a few more that's been hinted at in past topics...when Update 14 goes live.

Jack :)

After the update, everything you do in 3.8 will not carry over to 4.0 and vice versa. They become separate savestates.

Sorry if this has already been asked:
Will legacy mode be available for Odyssey?
If not (which is to be expected I am afraid) then this is bad (aka incomplete implementation of the splitting of the BGS).
PS: This is different to asking if odyssey players will have access to legacy mode. I understand they will have since they have access to 3.8 horizons mode already.

Yes it will. After the update, your CMDR will be cloned so you will have a 4.0 (Live) license and a 3.8 (Legacy) license which are separate savestates. 3.8 will not be removed for Odyssey owners.

BGS actions in 3.8 will only affect 3.8, BGS actions in 4.0 will only affect 4.0.

The way it is presented here suggests it wont:

Live Mode

As of Update 14, version 4.0 will become the “Live” mode in which all new content and events will be introduced.

Vs:

Legacy Mode

While “Live” will continue the unfolding events of Aftermath, we understand that some of our players have fond memories of the galaxy as it stands in 3.8 and as such we will convert version 3.8 into “Legacy Mode”.

Which for me at least presents an additional advantage for horizons players: They can play horizons in two different BGSs with two different cmdrs whereas Odyssey players can only play odyssey in one (live only) mode with one cmdr profile.
This clearly is one feature/option less for Odyssey owners.

I consider it another attempt to "encourage" (force) ppl to buy failure that ody is. I've downloaded 4.0 (Kingfisher is still permit locked in 3.8), and:
  • it doesn't look better
  • it takes more resources
  • it is more buggy
  • it has only one advantage - stored modules are quite nicely ordered.

When I first started it, I was welcomed by big Ody logo - so much about no common space instances because Horizons has another PEGI. This is not Horizons - it is just Ody Lite, and even starting screen shows it.

Summarizing - I'm still not going to buy Ody. I see no reason.

This is the issue when folks still cling to the past, Odyssey is not a failure, maybe you should try it?

Look here:
Every player will have a Legacy Commander profile created from their existing profile with separately tracked progress when Update 14 is released. Legacy mode will be accessible from the launcher as a separate download from the Live game.

And:
We understand that since we granted 4.0 access to all PC players, some Commanders have been using version 3.8 to play with friends who do not yet own Odyssey. With Update 14, Odyssey players will have the option to select either Horizons or Odyssey mode within Live Mode so that playing together remains possible.

So:
PlatformEDH 3.8 LegacyEDH 4.0 LiveEDO 4.0 Live
PC with OdysseyYes, Legacy Save with separate progressionYes, Live Save shared with EDO 4.0Yes, Live Save shared with EDH 4.0
PC with HorizonsYes, Legacy Save with separate progressionYes, Live SaveNo, Live Save will be shared with EDH 4.0 upon purchase
PlayStation 4Yes, Legacy SaveNoNo
XBox OneYes, Legacy SaveNoNo

Furthermore, 3.8 galaxy and 4.0 galaxy will have separate BGS states that will diverge over time and become separate galaxies aka "servers".

In a nutshell, 3.8 becomes Elite Dangerous: Classic.
