At least you're not being too negative about it...No new puzzles about Seo Jin-Ae, No community goal, No Update 15 in April (May is also questionable), No Major Feature Overhaul (never), No PMF, No this and No that. Am I really excited?. No.
Yeah, I've been trying to apply for one since before Christmas but the application system is broken, which was confirmed to me by support, and would be fixed in the coming weeks. Which is irritating since I found the PERFECT system with six native non-PMFs and one non-native, did the work to force out the non-native, and it was sitting there for months while I repeatedly checked the application system. Eventually another PMF expanded in there, and now it looks like that's that.Sad to hear about the PMF's applications being removed. I transferred my account from console (to PC) and just recently was in the process of creating a discord for a future PMF and squad. I found a nice location for a base of operations, moved my small fleet there...even chose a name (which I thought was kinda neat). Guess I won't be implementing that plan for a PMF now...it kinda sucks.
On a separate note, I'm just curious as to how FDev is planning to keep the existing player base around and entice new players to join? It appears that player numbers are dwindling...just a guess here (using google trends, steam numbers), as there's no actual numbers to confirm. Don't get me wrong it's a good game...although there's always room for improvement.
That's a bit of a superficial take. I highly doubt that it is that Frontier have no idea what to overhaul, but that Frontier haven't finalized what they plan to overhaul. I imagine that assessments need to be made on how much work one thing is compared to another, and how much impact it would have etc. What's bothering me a little is that it's not "postponed", they straight up have no idea about what they want to overhaul, which, for something announced almost a year prior is a bit strange.
Just saying, PMFs are very likely presenting a serious issue/complication with thargoids war mechanism due now existing possibility to fully wipe out all factions from a system. Before was impossible remove native MFs from a system and in PMFs case it makes things even worse due expectable players protests. Its very likely possible to program AI to avoid systems with local native pmf, but it may create numerous unexpected issues. Rework of PP makes in this regard perfect sense.
Honestly, that's what my initial interpretation of what they're saying is. It's possible that Frontier want to open up more space for colonization but the current system they have for PMF doesn't allow for it. If that's the case, then it's natural to wind that feature down to implement the more flexible one.And that's why it is time to get rid of them instead of opening more space for colonisation?
<confused>
Yeah, the devs are so enthralled by the Thargoid saga that they just have to stop work to view it all.. :-/ You don't think they mean the development resources that have gone into making the Thargoid War happen in the game? Including that of what's required for Update 15? No, of course not, that would be too objective of an observation..C'mon man, can't even admit that it was just poor planning or timing? Have to blame it on the "Thargoid war". If this is the case, then kudos to your programmers in their fight against the now self-aware thargoids and subsequent AI uprising! That said, I don't really care about the major feature rework considering no one has ever mentioned what it is, so there's that. Just...enough with the excuses. Rework is late, sorry.
With all due respect to your work, this update announcement to say nearly nothing with many words.Update 15, the Upcoming Feature Rework and MoreGreetings Commanders,
We trust that you have been enjoying Update 14 and all the action the Thargoid War is bringing to the bubble. Amidst everything going on, we are taking a moment to update you on our upcoming plans.
Update 15
Update 15 is set to build upon the narrative and unlock the next major stage of the Thargoid War. This will be among the biggest moments in the game to date and we’re excited to see how you react. To allow the necessary time for development and ensure the update meets expectations, Update 15 will release in May. An exact date will be confirmed closer to the time.
Major Feature Rework
Last year we announced a major update that would rework a long standing feature. This is still being investigated, however a number of changes (not least the Thargoid War itself) have required our attention as a priority. We will share details of this investigation and our plans towards the end of this year.
Player Made Factions: Applications Closing
Player Made Factions have played a key role in expressing your will over the shape of the bubble. This goal is at the heart of our plans for Elite and reflected in the Thargoid War. Our focus is now turning to investigate how upcoming systems will allow every player and player group to have a meaningful impact on the galaxy’s landscape. This means we will be closing applications for PMFs, however we will process any remaining applications.
Console Profile Transfer Portal: Returning Next Month
The introduction of Live and Legacy modes required us to pause the Console Profile Transfer Portal in November last year. However, we’re now ready to begin processing further requests and will re-open the portal in April. We are pleased to announce that this is a far more complete process than we anticipated. We look forward to more console Commanders joining us on PC, especially to enjoy the features offered by Odyssey. To see which elements of your console profile will be transferred, see our forum post.
Live Mode as the Default Download
In addition to the above, we will be making the Live version of Elite the default download. This will encourage new players to try the main version of Elite with access to future updates while keeping Legacy as an optional alternative. Implementing this change will cause an update to appear for all Steam users, and Legacy players will need to re-download that version to continue playing, existing Live players will not require an update. This will have no effect on your save files, so if Legacy is your preferred mode, you can continue playing normally once it is re-downloaded.
While the above announcements outline several major plans for the upcoming year, further announcements will be made in the upcoming weeks and months. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please leave them below!

The factions are suspended rather than destroyed - they return if the system is retaken. Several PMFs have already lost their home systems to this - and without checking to make sure I'd be very surprised if there weren't some smaller ones in a fully suspended state by now. (Well, people were asking for a way to remove dead PMFs, right?)Just saying, PMFs are very likely presenting a serious issue/complication with thargoids war mechanism due now existing possibility to fully wipe out all factions from a system. Before was impossible remove native MFs from a system and in PMFs case it makes things even worse due expectable players protests.
The bubble is already too large (far too large!) for any purpose other than "every PMF can have its own 10/20/50/100 systems". Without some very substantial reworking (i.e. not soon even if it is their plan) so that colonised systems have to be actively maintained to avoid collapse it'd just be creating thousands more systems that no-one ever visits except briefly when the nearby PMF expands, takes control, and never sees it again. And that's why it is time to get rid of them instead of opening more space for colonisation?
You kind of answered your own question...did the Thargoid war just happen spontaneously or did they, I don't know, maybe plan it out? If it was planned out, as one would suspect happens in development, then it's poor planning to do a major rework AND a major narrative. No one asked them for a rework, they brought it up themselves.Yeah, the devs are so enthralled by the Thargoid saga that they just have to stop work to view it all.. :-/ You don't think they mean the development resources that have gone into making the Thargoid War happen in the game? I completely agree with you. What's sad is that the same player base has more intentions for ED to grow and develop, than the very developers that are leading to ED's downfall.Could Fdev move to a crowfunding scheme, where they first state their intention and get voluntary funding from the players?
That could work, if total transparency is there.
I would probably pay a "triple A price" a year to ensure this fantastic game is properly funded, provided the objectives are clearly stated and the funds really used for Elite.
Let's build together with Fdev !
PS : And let's close this stupid ARX store, with its limited and quite awful skin options.
That is not correct.
We saw fleet carrier interiors, the major anomaly in HIP 22460, the maelstroms, the orthrus, the caustic generators and new fog and lighting effects being added post-Odyssey.
Major Feature Rework
We will do such things towards the end of the year – what they are yet we know not, but they shall be the terrors of the Earth.

That really sounds like old Fdev again. Next week they will probably tell us that they hear us and they promise to up their communication game. That's incredible... It was announced for early 2023 then never talked about again. And now at the end of March we learn that production hasn't even started. Not a single word on that in the meantime. Very nice.
