Update 15, the Upcoming Feature Rework and More

So, which part of Update 15 is considered a part of "Major Feature Rework"?
I only see the added content for AX and bug fixes here and there.

None, it was clearly stated mutliple times that the major feature rework has been put off for later in the year.

Major Feature Rework
Last year we announced a major update that would rework a long standing feature. This is still being investigated, however a number of changes (not least the Thargoid War itself) have required our attention as a priority. We will share details of this investigation and our plans towards the end of this year.

Beat me to it, was updating my post at the time lol!

I do feel that fdev should get a break from the vitriol over this ‘major feature rework’. The thargoid war is a significant piece of work (which I enjoying immeasurably), which we’ve been receiving for Free. You don’t even have to buy Odyssey to play over 95% of it. I know there are people who say that they don’t find thargoid combat interesting, but they’ve made enough non combat ways to contribute to the war. I see a lot of lazy comments about the thargoid war just being recycled content, but there are plenty of new scenarios in there, but you have to go looking for it.

As far as the new rework, I’m beginning to think that it will be a rework of the BGS to integrate Powerplay into it. The reason I think this is a lot of the other functionality is about 95% of the way there. For example, Engineering needs an easier way to get lots of mats (especially on foot) to cut down the grind. Crime and punishment needs a better way to deal with player killers and a couple of the discrepancies between on foot bounties and ship bounties. Multi-crew needs the gunner role sorted out. (I don’t think we’ll ever get the fixes that cqc needs).

But messing about with the BGS, that’s a huge amount of work.

So just before people were expecting the rework to be dropped and we get ohhh we haven't even even looked at that yet ( 1 year later) why not keep us updated ? Surely they knew after the many fixes and improvements that they weren't going to get there with the rework . But again left it to the last moment oooppsie our bad .
The Thargoid narrative is a basic BGS really . But with fdev fiddling the numbers. Oh look a new enemy, I know here is a new module to help but we need this and this and this. Wow never seen this happen before ?? rinse and repeat. In the end the triumphant humans will win the day cos we are the good guys ?? Aren't we ??

Update 15, the Upcoming Feature Rework and More
Greetings Commanders,

We trust that you have been enjoying Update 14 and all the action the Thargoid War is bringing to the bubble. Amidst everything going on, we are taking a moment to update you on our upcoming plans.

Update 15
Update 15 is set to build upon the narrative and unlock the next major stage of the Thargoid War. This will be among the biggest moments in the game to date and we’re excited to see how you react. To allow the necessary time for development and ensure the update meets expectations, Update 15 will release in May. An exact date will be confirmed closer to the time.

Major Feature Rework
Last year we announced a major update that would rework a long standing feature. This is still being investigated, however a number of changes (not least the Thargoid War itself) have required our attention as a priority. We will share details of this investigation and our plans towards the end of this year.

Player Made Factions: Applications Closing
Player Made Factions have played a key role in expressing your will over the shape of the bubble. This goal is at the heart of our plans for Elite and reflected in the Thargoid War. Our focus is now turning to investigate how upcoming systems will allow every player and player group to have a meaningful impact on the galaxy’s landscape. This means we will be closing applications for PMFs, however we will process any remaining applications.

Console Profile Transfer Portal: Returning Next Month
The introduction of Live and Legacy modes required us to pause the Console Profile Transfer Portal in November last year. However, we’re now ready to begin processing further requests and will re-open the portal in April. We are pleased to announce that this is a far more complete process than we anticipated. We look forward to more console Commanders joining us on PC, especially to enjoy the features offered by Odyssey. To see which elements of your console profile will be transferred, see our forum post.

Live Mode as the Default Download
In addition to the above, we will be making the Live version of Elite the default download. This will encourage new players to try the main version of Elite with access to future updates while keeping Legacy as an optional alternative. Implementing this change will cause an update to appear for all Steam users, and Legacy players will need to re-download that version to continue playing, existing Live players will not require an update. This will have no effect on your save files, so if Legacy is your preferred mode, you can continue playing normally once it is re-downloaded.

While the above announcements outline several major plans for the upcoming year, further announcements will be made in the upcoming weeks and months. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please leave them below!

@sallymorganmoore Does he mean "all" players( console as well ), or just the ones on p.c. ?

That’s because you’re interested in what’s replaced the “major feature rework” some of us have were looking forward too.
I don’t see the thargoid war as a replacement, all I’m doing is acknowledging that there is a lot of effort which has been put into the thargoid war which I don’t feel is being taken into account when the people discuss the major rework. I expect that the feature rework will happen, but I hope it’s not just another rework of engineering.

The issue is Frontier's errant judgement in what they can achieve within a certain time frame. The players didn't decide what was achievable, Frontier did and missed their own target.
See above point. There are some things that you can’t plan for when you make plans more than a year in advance. Maybe key developers left and a new team has to learn the code to catch up, which is why we’re seeing new faces on live streams these days, or (and I expect this is the case) that they’ve decided to expand the thargoid war content to round it out properly and not rush it. If they’d done that then we’d have the usual issue of fdev getting to 95% and then walking away. I prefer to have content that feels complete, not another powerplay, multi-crew or CQC.

That is, according to you the war with the Thargoids will be finite and not turn (roughly) into a PowerPlay. As soon as humans learn how to destroy the Titans from the other side 3 more will come.

I completely concur. -it is plain as day that they've been working hard on this chapter all around and i have a notion it is not quite done yet. ;)
They need to make sure the current course is good and let players acclimatize to the "new normal" while also not rushing it.
-them taking their good time to deliberate how to approach a major rework is not only sound, it is healthy.

Bad news for us who are in rural America where Internet sucks.
Replace "America" by "places around the world" and "us" by "all of us"
→ "Bad news for all of us who are in rural places around the world where Internet sucks."
My today's complains against Internet providers :)

a major update that would rework a long standing feature. This is still being investigated,
Anybody else want to play a 'geoguessr" game ? I've read the 47 pages and saw "I want X" again and again. I know this is a long standing key feature but I doubt Frontier will overhaul players.
So here's the idea let's try to let our feelings out of the game and try to guess. I've taken notes about all I read, added a few I could think about and now put K and L for what I think are Key features and Long standing features. Would you also put K and L to see what we think about them ? Feel free to add new features if it's not in the list. We might find all "LK" features that may be reworked not only the ones we want or would not want to see reworked and maybe find "Neo" :)

Note : I didn't put K on features I don't use and some I never used even with /played > 2000h . I thought they aren't key features as I can play without them while doing key activities (trade, "solo" missions, mining, bounty hunting in ship and on foot, etc.).

L Wings
L Multicrew (telepresence and physical)
L Community Goals
L External camera
L Powerplay
LK Route (Is waypoint a new key features or could be considered a rework ? IDK)
LK Player Minor Factions
L CQC
LK BGS Faction influence and status
LK BGS Commodity market
LK BGS Ship fitting market
LK Missions
L Squadrons
LK Planetary landing
LK Game modes (Open, PG, Solo)
LK Normal Flight model
LK Supercruise Flight model
LK Fitting eg I read sthg about Gimbal with SC using a one-class-less instead of less-damage)

Total power move not only did they put off the rework, they put off even saying what the rework was going to be in the first place.
they looked at what to rework and have come to the conclusion that all major features are so janky that they need a major rework, therefore they can't decide what to start with. and i don't blame them. that's true for software development in general, but especially so for elite, which has like a decade of development entopy in its codebase.
