There have been patches every 4 months on average - all with fun new content. You should really log in more often than every 2 years.
For all we know maybe they did included half of the new ships (models and skins) only in a deactivated state. So when they do became available in a future update, it too will only be a 30GB download instead of 60.
Good for us and less load on the servers too.
Phasers. I want to be able to shoot one at a wall and have a big hole show up when the glow fades away.

I came to that conclusion also.
I've not been particularly engaged with the Thargoid war (it never affected the things I do in game), but had some fun with the new content as it came along before 'play as normal', although the assets that came along (spire sites are just amazing!) with the ongoing story were good.
Me still hoping that the 'war' does suddenly become galactic once the torpedos have been fired, I guess, then I'd have to be involved in it, rather than able to go about my days innocently whistling as I liberate expensive cargo.

30gb, wow now im excited to see what new toys we get to play with! Alas I'm not going to be able to really get me teeth into the patch until Tuesday (bloody work and real life grrrrr!) With BGS support and the new patch there aren't enough hours in the day, maybe I should just quit work and play Elite!

Out of curiosity I copied the game's Win64 folder (the one that has everything other than the binaries and the shaders) and will compare it to U18 after the patch drops.
Not going to look into it in much detail, but the delta of the folder size and file counts should reveal something of the updated vs. new balance...especially since Frontier seems to keep everything in the client in separate files for some reason.
Motion vectors so we can finally get some kind of AA better than post-process blur filters or hideously expensive supersampling.

I might also lock myself out of the internet when the update is released and the servers are back online.As a VR player, I would kill for proper AA. Seriously. If the access to working AA was locked behind the conversion to ganking, I would. In a heartbeat.
While i'm not overly fussed by the really bad AA in this game, having some proper temporal aliasing and the likes of DLAA and the FSR equivalent would be bliss !

A 'new AA engine' was mentioned a couple of years ago, if my memory serves, then nothing more was ever said about it.
