Update 18 | Update Notes

One thing i dont need is more credits :p i pretty much "solved" that.. i was hoping by the time i had built my armada the game would have birthed some new things to do with all that stuff, but the reality is without the guardian grind and goid bashing i have made little meaningful progress, the credit is worthless in this new direction the game has gone. I cant use any of my engineered ships for goid content and without any guardian gear i cant even build something that wont get squashed.. i get that is entirely a "me" problem, but i dont want to chase my tail now tooling up for a goid fest only to find by the time i finish grinding out all the mats for the right ship its all over and i have gotten behind on some new thing.. might just hold off a while and see what happens
Like I said you don't really need to "grind" to try the thargoid content, but you do you. If you don't even want to try, then just keep complaining on the forum instead! ;)

i guess i didnt anticipate elite becoming an on-rails story.

Is it even worth trying to get into the AX stuff now with no guardian gear or experience with AX combat? feels too late tbh.
The story isn't really one you have to stick with - it's there....

yes , get some Enhanced ax multis , join a discord, (have fun with scouts at first)
Guardian modules are less useful in the current war , i have ax ships with no guardian things - because Glaves

Re: the 30GB update size, probably worth saying that I've heard from several reliable sources that after the update has been downloaded and applied the final size of the Odyssey game installation actually goes DOWN by about 6GB. One possible explanation for this (which ties in with reports of siginificantly improved framerates at settlements) is that FD have converted the game's textures to a smaller and/or more efficient format, which could easily affect a large number of the already installed game files and requires a significant number of them to be downloaded again and patched.

I have to say, if there's any truth in these rumours then it's really bizarre that FD wouldn't mention it - a) because improving framerates would be a massive thing to shout about in the patch notes and b) because it would address all the damaging speculation and expectation surrounding what the additional 30GB could mean.

Edit: my install increased by 0.3GB so it seems like rumours of a significant reduction and anything that might mean are just hearsay.

Or...
C. The new textures will be a downgrade. And Fdev would prefer it to go unnoticed.
Interestingly, well, not really. I had commented/queried here somewhere as to how much the 30Gb was overwrite compared to new coding.

The game didn't get smaller. I still have the U17 asset directory (\Win64), which, sans logs, is 99%+ of the game*. If someone's install is going down in size, something else is being removed. A 6GB reduction sounds like someone accidentally deleted a year or two's worth of netlogs.

I haven't see any changes to performance yet either. I haven't tested CZs yet, but the tutorials and other settlements are well within margin of error.

* specifically, U17 patch 1 was 89,466 files with a total of 55,369,878,864 bytes, while U18 is 90,821 files and 55,706,915,815 bytes total.

Random one... any reason the updater (standard Frontier one) decided to ENTIRELY fill up my C: drive when the game and launcher are located on a separate drive? This actually caused issues and I had to manually remove a load of "temporary" files the installer did not clean up on its own.

My game folder, just the elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 one, is 55GB, 59,271,876,608 bytes. Wonder why it's different?

I'm disappointed with myself for not being so used to disappointment by now that the release notes failed to disappoint, but I'm not, and they didn't.
