Update 18 | Update Notes

30GB -> more sound files -> bigger explosions and a friendly greeting from your FC. (just a guess, I'm sure FD would not announce this !)
I was wrong about the friendly greeting, but I have noticed that flying low over planetary surfaces seems to me to be a lot smoother than before.
There appears to be far less popping in of surface details, you can still see it if you look carefully, but is now less noticeable.
I run everything on ultra level settings and haven't changed any settings, either before or after the update.
Perhaps new textures and a new texture mapping system account for the 30gb.

Anyone else noticed this ?

A number of "people" .... you know streamers and people in the streamers' chat, have said that they believe there's been some changes to the graphics. This includes textures on ships looking better/sharper. So maybe there's been an overhaul somewhere that's also contributed to what you see.

Nothing, except a fix for a very specific issue with SRV and ship shadows vanishing.

In what way?

The shadow presets haven't changed, and I have noticed any changes in their implementation.
Since this update I get insane flickering on shadows on stations (outside and inside) ,on approach until getting closer - using ultra shadow settings as I had previously. Also on my Anaconda at times, in Supercruise at least. The only way I could address it was to lower Directional Shadows to Low - which just screws up shadows when in the lower part of the dock.

Was it glitchy?
Because i've built a combat Conda for the last bounty CG and while i was visiting engineers i did collect quite a number of materials.
In Sirius alone i got like 8 HGE, and a bit more in another engineer system.

Then, in the haz res (were i got like 40+ millions in bounties) i kept picking materials that were of interest (G5 materials and Chemical Manipulators mostly)
And i havent noticed any issue - all materials being picked manually (no collectors)
Definitely - i was having weapons stowed in the HGE, but in the CZ i dont think i bothered to stow the weapons 🤷‍♂️
It is for some people. Maybe it's my paint job, my 240 fps or something, I dunno.

Try changing ambient occlusion to any other value, save, than set it back to before.

Did they do something to the graphics? This looks very different than anything I have seen before (the smooth sandy ground in particular):

Last night I found that I couldn't jump into SC, even after my FSD had fully charged. The FSD charged up and then there was no countdown. Tried to jump into a different system and it was the same. Then, I found I couldn't even hop out into the main menu. The only way to get out and back to normal was to force-kill the game. Not sure if that was an existing issue, prior to the update, but that was a new one for me.

The game has always had shadow issues that can be highly dependent on the specific area and relative position of the sun. It's possible that something changed with the update, but there were no changes to the shadow cascades themselves and the only LOD changes mentioned are for the Type-9 and the GU-97, not stations.

It almost looks like it's not loading the proper LOD textures and models. It might be what it looks like from very far away.

That's exactly what it looks like. Might need to restart the game, reenter SC then land again, or clear caches. Could also be VRAM contention, if you're borderline on VRAM capacity.

I do not think it's due to any specific change to any asset in the update, but I haven't checked for increase VRAM utilization that could have this as a symptom.
