VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

4008x3192 getting 70 fps in space 50 odd in a buggy. That's 100% steam slider and 160% per application
Works ok. Oddly but thankfully on foot is 90fps solid. Which is why l like this setting.

I looked at FDs car racing game "Manager 22" it is not VR supported when every other car racing game that is any good supports VR. FD just can't seem to get in the game.

Or to turn it around, if there were more VR uses of the base Horizons game, it would have made putting it into Odyssey on foot play essential....
My first couple time in Odyssey VR, I remember being really mad at fdev.... But then I realized, I honestly believe they Really, Really wanted VR in Odessey, maybe even more than most of the actual VR players. The thing that made me realize this is the fact that they not only left in the bootleg grey-bordered VR screen in, knowing they would get negative feedback... but that they also squeezed in the true VR experience wherever possible like the Fleet Carrier jump that is Post Odyssey release... and also full VR 3rd person camera officially in the controller section post release..... I feel pretty certain that if they ever get the code to work with full VR legs with even just decent fps, it will be back to high priority. I think the bootleg grey VR is just them saying 'we are not forgetting!'.

On a side note, for Robby... I started trying out your EDDi after I made that 'Mandatory' thread and man... EDDi is ridiculously powerful... very well done! However, as a 90% VR user, I don't use it as much as I would like to (I tried using OVR-toolkit, one of the apps that allow you to use a functional app-screen to attach to your wrist (or the wall in ship) but EDO VR is already too demanding... works fine in some other games but not EDO.
However last week I just enabled your voice pack plugin which seems to be very useful for VR users. I saw that there are check-boxes to enable/disable what is announced and there is a text editor that I haven't tried yet.... One of my favorite features that I found is the ability to see '12/12 objects discovered' or '3/12' letting you know the system is not complete... this is an awesome time saver when playing in 2D.... Is there a way to get that announcement by voice in VR when entering a system? (but be careful if you say 'yes', cause I'll end up having a list of about 100 different things I'd start requesting being enable/disable capable... eg: enable only 'Alexandrite' Hotspots or certain biologicals in system lol)

I suspect there's still some desire in house for VR, yep. If also some serious business concerns about the ROI. (It's worth noting that it took a major community backlash before they even committed to launching EDO with native VR at all ;))

My suspicion is that they canvassed staff on who would be prepared to implement/maintain vehicle VR in EDO, and got a positive response from some devs. And given community interest, set aside the comparatively modest budget that would require. (Possibly involving some of those devs time sharing with other projects etc).

My further suspicion is that that've left the path to on foot VR clear throughout EDO's development. Where they could have introduced blockers, they didn't (no canned animations on transitions from SRVs / ships, panel interactions etc). And much of what they've introduced sits within better VR practice (large in-game panels for simple interactions, ammo counters on the gun rather than UI, etc).

The question mark over whether they can ever walk further down that road is still pretty huge. But at least the path is still open ;)

With Half Life Alex and NMS having cracked the code so successfully what is the hold up?

I'm not a coder or anything but I think ED is using some custom world building engine, 'something forge' or whatever. I guess some of those other engines already have code for VR built in but with fdev i think they have to write everything in themselves. I have Alyx, and a few other titles that use your real body mechanics and individual finger input and it is breathtaking to see things in your virtual hands... speaking of breathtaking, one of my sims (Onward) you can actually see your breath when you're in a cold environment... It was supper trippy the first time I saw that.... and the free game 'PokerStars VR' where you can have cigarettes and cigars and blow out the smoke while you're at the tables... there were times where I didn't smoke a real cig all nite but felt like I did cause the VR was that good lol.

Stellar Forge which has nothing to do with VR or pancake display, it's the engine that creates the galaxy of Elite, the graphic engine is the Cobra engine which has been doing VR since Elite Dangerous first launched in alpha I think, definitely beta though. There are any number of reason we don't have proper VR for Odyssey but my money is on it being it being a step to far to admit that they simply cannot get performance good enough and are unwilling to spend the dev time attempting to do more than to get it to run at a reasonable-ish rate in pancake mode.

This thread is a never ending loop.

Don’t buy it.
You can turn on the vanity camera and I get good preforming VR, just the camera is wrong.
