was there an optimisation pass at all?

Yamiks showed a 50% decrease in performance between Horizons and Odyssey, just sitting in a station looking at the mail slot. So not even showing a planet you get your frames cut in half? A switch to PBR textures doesn't do that. The graphics system is broken.

If the frame rate was a little lower but the game looked better then, maybe, I could forgive lower performance.

But the frame rate is worse than half of what it was and the game looks worse: There's something wrong with the shadows: It looks flat and 2d. The gamma is completely broken. Holo-me looks like someone's been creating uncanny plastic copies of my commander.

So you're saying that Odyssey will give me Horizons performance in Solo?

iu

No, because even in Solo mode you are connected to the servers, as you know well being a former KGB agent

I also know that very few and infrequent connections are made to the server while in solo mode, because as KGB I use Wireshark to analyze such things. I can tell you with assurance, comrade, that Odyssey's terrible framerate has nothing to do with networking. (Unless you're in a busy location in Open, where P2P instancing network code does affect framerate).

I have RTX 3080, 8 core/16 threads i7 5.1Ghz, 32Gb RAM laptop. Native/Horizons ED on ultra was 160+ FPS always on 2k resolution. Now its 40 FPS, no matter what and where (even in space lol). Why, Frontier?? It is not playable. I'm about to refund or just wont ever play Odissey again. The main point - never would play that again in the current state of the performance. Its impossible. For me ED optimization was always the standart of optimization. It was incredible, amazing, ideal. But now... What happened?...

There is literally nothing to load your system that hard. Okay, let it be on a surface, but the same space with splitted up to 2-3 times FPS I dont understand lol. Could anyone say what they've changed? As Ive heard it's new shaders. If its that - please remove them at least for now, give to us ability to play again please! PLEASE!!!

Oh cool, run a capture in solo mode and post the results here, should be fun to analyze. And revealing!

I'm recommend spec for GPU and min spec for CPU - memory 24GB.
For me the performance and frame rates in most places seem exactly the same as during the Alpha.
In fact if wasn't for a few little tweaks here and there I'd say was still playing the Alpha - except during Alpha the servers stayed up for more than 5 minutes at a time.

This is a below average launch for FDev and their average was never great in the first place.

Just made tutorial with 7 fps ...good game. hope I will not be forced to "farm materials" at such rates...could live with clicking things on station at 7 fps...but combat...

It's better than it was in the Alpha.

Still, it's pretty bad, I sometimes hit 30FPS when on foot.
I was mostly at 90-120 FPS before Odyssey.

Some people actually believed final release would result in a 60% performance increase. That's not optimization. That's a miracle.

Not really, with no optimisation at all, you could tank something down to 10FPS, with optimisation you could jump up to 200FPS showing the same stuff.

If you are working the graphics card to re draw everything a hundred times, when you only need to draw it once, well, you gonna lose a lot of speed.

This is why I am absolutely convinced someone forgot to implement the Occlusion and Frustrum Cullling.

I've played a few Early Access games that give you access to dev controls that allow you to disable things on the fly, one such being Occlusion and Frustrum culling. I did testing myself plenty of times with those. You wanna know what happens?

With culling turned on, you can be glistening along at 120fps, disable culling, and suddenly you're looking at 40fps.

This kind of behaviour in Odyssey REALLY makes me think they messed up the culling, because when even a 3080 can't keep the game above 60fps regardless of resolution, something is clearly wrong.

if you think it's bad try VR
it's basically unplayable now...
I agree, Odyssey is simply unplayable in VR.

I have just been testing VR using a low demanding scene, in normal space flying around an outpost. In Horizons I get full 90fps at around 60% GPU usage the exact same scene in Odyssey GPU is pinned at 100% usage and struggling to even hit 45fps, sometimes up to 60fps. Same graphics settings. Even in SC with almost nothing on screen it tops out at 75fps.

My specs:
HMD: HP Reverb G2 (set to 80% resolution scaling in steam VR settings)
RTX3080 (water cooled)
Ryzen 9 3900X (water cooled)
32GB RAM
