We need the ability to form in-game clans

In case you missed it: Leaders kick those players off the clan. Simple.
Eventually these derps will either get the message that that kind of game play is unacceptable, or they will eventually find other derps to join (and pull towards a small part of the galaxy instead of letting them roam free)

I do no think that kind of player/clan/group would go from a 'I'm gonna cause havoc' mentality to an 'ooh, I can play barbies with my space base' mentality.

A clantag can make it easier for single players to find attachement to others. Those who are passionate gamers will anways form a group, with or without label. But people not like this will come across someone having a specific label and think "hey they may fit with my mentality" and start asking them and playing with them to find it out. How does one even force his mentality over me just because he is in a clan? LOL I'm confused and still think it's sarcasm what you wrote -but then in the internet, I am not always sure about that.

But yes clanexclusive features are a not so good idea, because that will more or less force people to join clans/communities or whatever they may be called, so the maximum of this should be some form of label and maybe a sticker for the ship for some visual identification.

Player owned bases is what basically the subfactions should do, and a proper economy system wher peoeple can upgrade bases by importing and exporting what a base demands to increase its wealth. The subfactions are the way to channel this "ownership". it would then also help to create probably more PP characters from player generated factions due to how people would feel more attachement to a specifc subfaction.

After that ramble, I think player owned bases would be awesome.

I would counter player owned bases with player supported outposts on planet surfaces.

I would love to have a mission to seed an outpost somewhere.... maybe we could even pick the location ourselves based on our own exploration (I dunno, not sure if feasable). We dump off the npcs and we service their needs.... do a good job they expand. perhaps others help, perhaps not. eventually you would reach tippoing point and they become self sufficient but you can still help them thrive.... if not they die off.

this is great because it is mode neutral, it is great content (imo) and you still do not have control of anything, but perhaps rewards could include such thing as reduced / free berthing fees for your ships etc if you do enough work. (berthing fees being a thing i would like to see, but only when there are mechanics in game to avoid them)

importantly however it is still not MY outpost..... anyone else can still visit and dock there so long as they do not fall foul of the laws of that system. (which the npcs would determine based on the type of settlement they built)

What you're suggesting, I think, doesn't sound too bad - one out-of-the-way base for each clan, tops. But I suspect the majority of those who are pushing for clans would not be satisfied with that. And I'm still suspicious, because - as Kristov says - clans often have a toxic effect on games, regardless of devs' intentions.

I agree, which is why I suggested this idea would be 'at most' what the dev's would offer. Absolutely nothing more, no matter how much these clans beg and cry.
If they limit clan sizes to say, 100 members, then the most that would happen is that you would see sister-clans pop up around the galaxy. Again, this doesn't affect current game play because the sister-clan might end up on the opposite end of the galaxy (which would offer absolute 0 benefit to the original planet base)

Once a clan is formed, let the ED servers pick a random land base, rename it to the clan name and activate the clan community goals on it. Let it expand and grow in size and turn it into something spectacular that other players can visit and marvel at.
Ah heck (just thought of this), expand the clan-community goals to an everyone community goal. Let the clan-leaders plan for a base expansion (ie, additional landing pad) and put it out for everyone to supply the resources to build it. It would be a clan-driven community goal. If a solo player likes the current layout of a base and would love to see it grow further, they would contribute to the community event. But like I said, offer no reward bonus for it (so in essence, it ends up costing you money to contribute to the clan-goal).

I would love to see what each clan could build, to visit a land base and see the different layouts of bases, to see massive fuel storages, hydroponics domes, control towers and landing pads scattered all around.
I was wrong to say that it offers 'absolutely no additional benefits". It would add 1 major benefit.... accomplishment.

If you're just keeping things down to a clan tag, the yes, it is that simple. I think that's an ok idea.
When it gets more than that - having bases, supplies and common assets - you have to be careful about who comes into your clan because spies and thieves will be a thing. And the best of them will do their damage before the clan leader has chance to boot them.
 
Clantags are already available, reset game, choose new name, have all clan members do the same.
Done.

Honest, people are blowing this up more than what it was intended.
Let me strip this down for everyone.

The clan base of operations is basically this:
- Starts off as a small land base (exactly the same that is being introduced in horizons)
- As your clan gathers resources, you can 'grow' the base in size.
- The base has your clan tag as its name
- Clan based community goals that will allow your base to grow and function (eg, flu outbreak, gather medicines to maintain current base size or Collect minerals to add another landing pad)
The End

No expanding to other systems, No unfair abilities, No anything else.
Like I said, really really simple. Just a common ground for your friends to gather and work towards a common goal.

Actually, they are correct, Lily isn't being honest, and it's already happening in Elite Dangerous right now. RoA, you go into the systems they claim in Open, they'll kill you, simple as that, they've been up front about it too. They aren't the only group doing that in Elite Dangerous either, we also have groups who go to every CG simply because they know they can find lots of unarmed trading ships to gank, that's their entire reason for being at them, ganking, nothing more, nothing less. The CGs will be hundreds to thousands of light years from their home systems, so it's not like they are defending their own turf or something. Smiling Dog Crew has been rather active at this as has The Code, going where ever there is a CG and actively ganking people just because they can and they find it amusing.

Now, the groups defending the area they call home, or pirates operating out of a central system and hitting the systems with a radius around that, understandable, acceptable even wanted to an extent by David and probably most of us over all. But those groups needs to be giving warnings, not just ganking a single T6 with 3 wings of Pythons and Anacondas as is currently done by many of them.

Naturally, we can all bypass that by simply playing in Solo or Group, but many of us WANT to have some interaction with other players so we try to play in Open as much as possible, but we shouldn't HAVE to switch to Solo or Group to avoid this kind of behaviour, you may consider it fun to be ganked by multiple wings of big ships who don't say anything and just destroy you, I don't, most people don't, we find it annoying to be polite about it.
 
Ah, my favourite topic. I'll refer all of you to the guilds/clan mega-thread. There are some excellent (and some not so good) arguments for and against in there.

Right now people can make player defined subfactions. Also NPC's belong to these subfactions. So by logic, players should be able to alos "join" subfactions. which then by the fact that players can generate these subfactions do exactly have the purpose of "clans".

Add some group-chat into the mix and that's exactly the sort of player grouping/clans functionality I hope will come. No control, no territorial possession. Just an affiliation and sub-group of the community.

All we need IMO, is simply better tools for existing player groups.

I run a small "friends-of-friends" group and it's rather annoying that I have to be online to accept join requests.
Thankfully, it's rare that I get new members, but I can only imagine what it's like for the larger player groups.

It's worth emphasasing - player groups are already here. Some are infamous. Some are renowned. The vast majority you'll never see, hear of or interact with.

The toxic groups are already in the game, being toxic. Fighting against an expansion of features for player groups only hurts the groups. Adding features won't hinder your game experience in any way (barring development time has gone on that, rather than something else which you might have preferred.)

Seeing groups like the Fuel Rats have made David realize that not ALL groups are like The Code, they aren't all out to just gank anyone they can and cause grief to other players for grins and giggles, instead, they are formed out of a desire to HELP other players in the game simply because, they expect no recompense, they ask no toll or price, they simply want to help.

THAT has made David rethink this situation, so we'll probably see SOME limited group tools in the future, but don't expect too much. We have very large anti-social groups already, FD is very much aware of them and their actions, and they don't really like the affect it has on the community overall, that kind of negativity is EXACTLY what David hates, so anything they do will be tempered by that knowledge and how it can be abused by them to cause grief to other players.

I like the idea that FD will put their own spin on player groups. Player-created minor factions I think were a good step in the right direction and I suspect we'll carry on in that vein.

Could he enjoy clan content, such as described in the OP, without joining a clan? In my experience of guilds and clans from over 15 years playing these types of games, the answer to that is a square no.

Making it official, just so we can have a tag is cool. But that's not what the OP is talking about.

Remember, most of us are saying this because the CEO of the game has said it many times. This isn't the game for those who want Eve style clan content. And it's highly likely it'll never be.

I adhere to an identity tag. It deprives not a single individual from any of the content and offers value to those that desire it. Besides, a simple example ( GuildWars ) offered AI as an alternative to players on about their instances. Much of OP's proposal has no content which could not be achieved by AI. Nullifying the idea of marginalizing solo players.
The question is not about equilibrium between the modes, but about the base content game-play. An identity tag does no harm.
Inflatable bases were announced already, carrier ships are incoming. OP's idea is coming at one point or another, in different shape and form maybe, but the ground structure is already being made.

No, it wouldn't keep them happy. It would keep you happy - but that's not the same thing. (And I refer you to our previous conversations on the topic in the mega-thread.) The idea is to be a grouping inside the wider community.

You think its a viable solution, because you have this pre-conception that you refuse to let go of about all player groups existing only to exert control and power on other players. You think they'd be happy in an environment in which corp-style groups could go at each other hammer and tongs without ever involving you. But your pre-conception is (generally) wrong.

In the vast majority of my experiences, player groups are generally quite harmless and mind their own business. The problem is that the trouble-makers (and I'll not deny some are out there, and would continue to be out there) tend to achieve a higher profile precisely because of their anti-social ways.

There are other ways of controlling the bad eggs - not least of which is through a more aggressive adoption of anti-social policies within the game (which should apply to individual players, as well as player groups). Whether Frontier would commit to that is another matter. So, in short, there are better ways of making sure that individual player experiences are good without hiving off chunks of the broader community away from the "not interested in player groups" players.

The devs have stated quite clearly how they expect 'bad eggs' to be dealt with by the community...they are to be ignored, avoided (mode usage), or beaten upon until one side or the other wins...or one of the first two choices occurs out of boredom from beating on each other. Choice is good!

This can be done through PVP which will cost all parties money to be involved with OR you can do this through PVE and receive in game rewards for your efforts...again..choices galore!

And how does having a clantag cater towards or versus this? That has nothing to do with what a single or group of pilots already does, can do or will be able to do.
The clantag does not change what people does, it does in bets case it even helps you to identify hostile people earlier when you can already see this guy belongs to that clan of gankers to get the F out of here before he gets too close.

Some kind of 'clan' or 'group' support in-game is coming. I do not know in what form, and how it will be different from more traditional 'guilds' in other MMOs', but there is already some allowances for it in the basic structure of the game. For instance clan-tags exist already in the database. There just is no ingame hooks to them for player-groups to self-administer these. Most our members in Contrail got the [CTRL] clan-tag after our name by sending a request and a confirmation-code (to verify one is in our group) to the support staff.

Also, whatever shape the clan/group-support will take, it will also include minor factions in some manner or another. As a host of player-groups have received on request a minor faction in their name that control the controlling station in a system.

How this all will develop in the future is not easy to predict, as FD tend to want to do things their own way and not necessarily the traditional one. Though the low-hanging fruit would be to have some kind of group-management built into the game that resemble what we have in for instance War Thunder and World of Tanks. That would at least serve to relieve the support-staff the task of adding and removing clan-tags from people as they join or leave a group.
 
Frontier could offer someting limited, like a small asteroid base only a group could buy, or a small moon base you could own... Without giving clans the power to buy something like a Coriolis!
 
One thing, the whole 'boss people around' bit and the 'groupmind/sheeple mentality' bit...those are things that happen, I won't deny it, I've seen it, I've accidently joined groups over the years in small games that turned out to be just those. I always quickly left said groups because, at the end of the day, you CAN always leave them, you don't have to stay, you don't even have to join in the first place, it's ALWAYS up to the individual.

I'm part of a unit that's been gaming together in online games for 20 years now, various games and genres of games, from first person shooters to RPGs, we play all sorts of games together and we have fun. We're a very competitive group of players generally, we lead leaderboards, win leagues, that's what we do, and in combat that is for a purpose, our comms are mostly silence. 20 years, we don't need to talk much, but any comms will be important and rank matters.

Outside of those rare important drops, we could give a rat's furry rear end about rank or anything of that sort. We're friends who've been gaming together for 20 years, we talk about kids, grandkids in a few cases, SO's, work, politics, whatever, doesn't matter. Our FIRST priority for any possible recruit to our unit is very important to us...you have to be someone we enjoy bsing with. Being good at the game, we can teach you that if it's important, but we can NOT teach you how to be someone we like to with, so that's our primary concern. You have to be good with listening to us as we get high or drunk and get stupid, we have to be good listening to you do that as well. We don't tell you how to think, what to do or how to play the game, unless it's a combat drop for a reason(league/ladder rank game), do whatever the hell you want, WE will, you can count on that! I belonged to a guild in DDO and SW:TOR that is the same, only in that, the guild leader was ALWAYS the first to die and his wife was always lost somewhere, so one of us would have to get the guild leader up while someone else was playing guide for her, and we had a blast. We had so many party wipes it wasn't funny, but that's why we had so much fun together, it wasn't serious, it was a GAME and we were just having fun. -)SiN(-, group I played BF games with, some of the best teammates in the world, some of the WORST human beings on the planet, loved gaming with them. During combat that counted, it was just like a real life combat op, the rest of the time, oh my gods we were HORRIBLE to each other! Tking was the LEAST of the things we'd do to each other, and we had a blast the whole time, cussing each other out on voice comms, laughing so hard we could barely play the game.

THAT is what most units/team/groups/clans are really like, just a group of like minded people who enjoy bsing with each other while they play a video game, that's it. You can find the other types, the 'do as you're told and shut your trap otherwise' units, they exist, but you have to want to do that, no one forces you to do it. And in most games, the units can't force anyone to do anything, just doesn't work that way. In Elite Dangerous, they can't do it either, even now The Code and Smiling Dog Crew can't FORCE anyone to be a victim of their ganking, you can easily avoid them by going to Solo or Group, or simply avoid the area they are, your choice.
