We still can't input Coordinates for planet surfaces. Why?

Sandy's last word on it was over a year ago and he said that before they would consider doing it there would need to be 'gameplay to support it'.

Really?! I have requested this a couple of times. Now I know why it is still not a QoL thing.

It's attitudes like this, lack of vision, that makes ED the mess it is.

Try this.

Just put in where u at and where u goin.

Oh there's a bloody third party tool for this?

Mystery solved, we know why it isn't in game yet.

Every single time someone goes to the trouble of doing FDev's work for them like this, they take it as a cue to say "well now we don't have to do it" and resume looking for more colourable things to slice off the game and sell back to us piecemeal on the store.

Y'all remember that time the third party devs got sick of FDev's crap and shut down all their services for a few days? Best thing that ever happened to this game, really lit a fire under their backsides, and the only thing I didn't like about the whole affair was that they brought them back up afterward.
Never forget they are a profit driven business and will take advantage of all the generosity and free labour time you're willing to give them for no reason other than you're sick of waiting for them to do it themselves.
Add that not everyone is willing to go through the hassle of installing half a dozen of these extra tools made by who knows and drawing extra resources (I'm certainly not) just to use features that should be in the game as standard.

Bring the whole thing crashing down, the uproar alone will force FDev's hand. If you're good at something, never do it for free, they're laughing at you all the way to the bank.

A little hyperbolic for effect but you know this all to be true if you remember the event I'm talking about. People badly want these features and the only reason FDev won't provide them is because someone else did it for them. Mods and enhancements are one thing every game gets from its community for but the devs to shamelessly use them like this says to me in this case they should stop for their own good and the good of the game long term.

I remember that shutting down of the 3rd party sites and just how quickly Fdev scrambled to appease them.

You make very valid points. In one of the 3.0 preview livestreams someone in chat asked if the new galmap trading features were meant to replace eddb and the devs said that it wasn't meant to replace edbb et al, but to complement them, and that intended use was to use them together. Seems like that's ingrained from the very top of the design tree.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of their comments on the subject, only cements it further in my mind. They see these things as ways to save money and time by getting the community to expend their own labour instead. It's a windfall of win wins for them. They don't have to pay anyone to write the code, they're not responsible for ensuring compatibility and maintenance after updates, many of them are strictly web based and therefore console compatible without having to go through MS/Sony's verification process. I'm thinking half the reason it takes so long for some quality of life features to make it into the game is because they like to wait and see if someone will get fed up and write their own tool for it instead, and the ones they do work on are the ones that can't be accomplished easily by third party devs or would just be too egregious to leave out.
The only people who can resolve this are the third party devs and the community as a whole. Shut them down, stop using them, demand the real thing from FDev. And I by no means wish to belittle the hard work of the people who do these things, I wouldn't ask you to throw all that away were it not for good reason and ultimately in your own benefit in the long run.

Well, at least they're slowly adding some of these sort of things in. Hoping to see this sooner or later in the game. I don't use third-party tools nor sites other than one of the ship build ones.

Thanks for the thread OP. While technically had before, it is important to keep raising this subject as a QoL issue, a core-gameplay issue, and the building out of the virtual world in space that Braben originally envisioned.

It's 41 pages long. :p

No way am I wading through that. Are there any particularly pertinent comments from the dev team about the subject?

Yes, the dev's have stayed away from it, but backdoored the API fixes for this to the third-party dev's.

Lots of good ideas, though.

Lack of vision on ED's part, that's just funny, cuz it's not your vision? Yeah it was a pain the fist few times, but I learned it, just like landing at an outpost or a hi-g world. As for third parties, most love doing that stuff and almost always better than any info central the game maker puts out. Please do slam ED until they put BIG floating neon signs in space, Land Here, don't forget auto pilot and auto land on moon. So when I get back from the bar, I can just smile.

So like me, every time you find yourself doing something in-game where you would actually want to fly to specific coordinates, just remind yourself that you shouldn't be irritated because whatever you're doing doesn't actually exist.

Yeah, absolutely no gameplay reasons at all. I think I just leave this here:

I wonder if Ed would actually agree with Sandro? I think his face says it all. :D

It would be nice to at least have a LAT/LONG coordinate overlay for the planet/moon in the systems map when you zoom in. This will help in 2 ways; if you're on the ground you'll know (roughly) where you're at and at least be able to eye-ball a bearing to head to and if in the entry phase you'll know where to point your ship.
This feature shouldn't require too much of dev resources as the overlay can be modified straight from the planet/moon model and layer relabeled (i.e LATLONG_Overlay).

Should look something like this while zoomed in on a planet/moon

That's because it isn't intuitive. Ed is completely justified in his confusion while trying to navigate to coordinates on the planet surface, the majority of us feel like this every time we try.

Additionally, Frontier does not like text entry. Note what Ed is using to play.

Not sure about that. I use a controller for convenience as well, but search for things on the galactic map or text chat just fine. Well... depending on how much I've had to drink at any rate. I'm a better pilot. ;)

So they've ignored what the community wants, which doesn't seem to be even that much of a technical problem, and opened up the API in the hope someone will write a piece of software to do the very basic thing that should be part of their game?

Although from what I can gather, the output to the log files isn't fidelicious (my word, no you can't steal it) enough for people to do anything constructive with.

Double fail?

I would like this feature as well, but entering text on the console sucks so I'd appreciate it being implemented with the ability to see lat/long as a grid from the Planetary Map and place a marker down on the surface, in addition to being able to do text entry. That way you can zoom in, find coordinates you know, and place a marker there. You could also go into the planetary map while you're on the planet, place a bookmark on the current location (maybe a class of bookmark, like "Logged Surface Coordinates"), and be able to come back to it in the future.
