ANNOUNCEMENT Welcome to the new forums!

All things that should have been sorted out before they shoved us over from the old (read: working) forum to this pile of steaming manure.
While, as usual, FDev -could- have done more testing, it's difficult to test everything which a large userbase will encounter. And it's actually pretty impressive how much is working/carried over from the original forum.

I do largely agree with your assessment though; as far as I'm concerned the old forum software did the job quite nicely. Change just for changes sake should never be done, and changes which -remove- features (without adding compelling new features) should be very very carefully considered. Personally I haven't yet seen anything in the new forum which justifies it as a compelling feature over the old one. The actual look-and-feel is subjective (I don't particularly like the new layout but unlike many I'm ok with the white-on-black) but the functionality can be objectively assessed.

FD didn't do it to add features though, they did it because the previous software gave poor performance and because the version of vbulletin they were using had reached end-of-support.

Just to clarify one of the points raised about the forum theme, we can absolutely (With your feedback) look at changing the Elite Dangerous theme to make it more appealing to everyone. What we currently can't do is enable the option to pick the theme in the Elite Forum (i.e. let you choose the Jurassic World Evolution theme). It's a functionality that's not currently there with the subgame sections. It's something we'll be looking into but we have no time frame of when it could be added or if it is possible.

In the meantime we would very much appreciate suggestions for theme changes so we can make it work better for you :)

Alas the old forum software, whilst maybe OK on the public side of things, had passed it's sell by date on our side of things. The new system gives us much needed improvements and gives us room to do more stuff down the line later if we want to. It might take a little getting used to initially and there will be a few mishaps now and there as we all look to make things great again but in the long term the change over will be worth it :)

Unfortunately, that lack of functionality makes it unfit for purpose.
You guys wasted your money on this one.

As to theme changes, it absolutely needs to be black text on a light background, though some people will say the reverse. It's not a "nice to have" feature, it's vital. If the software can't deal with that, then it's the wrong software. I can't honestly believe you didn't test that before buying it.

To be fair, it works using OAUTH.
That is, when you login to the store it generates a unique code which is then used to log you in to the forum. So the forum will never "know" your store login details.

Just the fact that I now have to use the complex password I had for the store rather than the slightly easier forum password is not good. Browsing the forum in a public place where shoulder surfing can happen, or (if it does this) having the hashed password stored as a cookie until it is cleared on a mobile device that might be stolen, etc, not very palatable.

OAUTH itself is not immune to problems, either Mobile app Hijack

My understanding from the announcements was that linking the accounts was optional.

What I would like in order to feel comfortable logging in is the ability to link the forum account to a new store account that is not the one I use to play the game, or the ability to log in without the accounts linked at all. Can someone at Frontier make that happen for me?

I remember when we couldn't even have avatars .... so all things considered, I am sure I'll cope ... but being able to choose from a selection of themes would be nice ;)

If this is the case why not have just one unified theme that was a compromise between bright white and dark grey/black?
Research done in the '70s found that the most comfortable presentation colours were dark green background with yellow lettering. This lead to green blackboards and yellow chalk. Doesn't work too well for people with red/green vision deficiencies, but I found it quite restful.
I believe the modern fashion for using a black field is to save battery power in mobile devices, but it looks more like a victory of design over practicality..

When uploading a new avatar, you can click and drag it to where you want it displayed.

As for the animation issues, it's something we're working on.

Really?? Because I have gone to the edit pages multiple times, dragged my avatar to where it should be, and it never saves it. It still looks fine when I go back to the editor though.

Keep up the good work people! Think I'll take a break from here until it gets a bit more usable. I'll leave you with my notifications, which I'm sure others will already have reported :)

Edit: And why is my avatar not animated? Hopefully you'll put together a list of known issues. Except you don't even do that for the game. Sigh. Bye!

You could let us choose a different theme for the Elite Forum, by just setting a default at the top level and not forcing subforums to use a specific theme - but you choose not to. You could also have done it by making it a forum-per-game (rather than lumping them all together as you've done) and setting the default for each, but again you chose not to do that. So it is possible. How about removing the sub-forum themes and let us choose our themes, then you go and badger XenForo to allow you to brand each subforum accordingly, and re-add the enforced themes once it's possible to change them?

Honestly not sure how this didn't come up before the (alleged) "upgrade". Or if it did, how it wasn't deemed a bigger issue? I'm also guessing no-one bothered to look at it on a mobile device either, but that's a whole other issue.

I also can't believe your "fix" is to use Stylish. You're honestly recommending this ? 🤦‍♂️ (And again, please tell me how to even do that on my iPhone?)

You understand that's the most important side, right ?

Unfortunately, that lack of functionality makes it unfit for purpose.

Very much agree with this. Dark text, light background.

Fair enough; I perhaps misunderstood the drivers behind the change.

However, the selection process for the new software -should- have required feature-parity with the old software from the users' perspective. It appears that this is, unfortunately, not the case.

So, it turns out that by going down the unlit stairwell without stairs and looking in the locked filing cabinet marked “Beware of the Leopard”, there is a way of logging in without going through the Frontier linked account, i.e use your old Forum name and password. Just visit the xenforo login page https://forums.frontier.co.uk/login

Why make it difficult to find? Why make it seem like there is no option but to link accounts?

Most importantly for me now, how do I unlink the accounts? Can someone from Frontier do that for me or tell me how to do it?

When in doubt, go with the standard - black text on a white background. Search engines use this, news sites use this, blogs use this. The forums are for reading and writing text, not for simulating the cockpit of our spaceship.

Got me logged in without going through the store page, meaning I'm logged in at work! Back to browsing forum whilst pretending to work!

I just realized via registered members section there are "only" roughly 200k forum accounts.
It makes me wonder how many active pilots there are at times.... the bubble has more planets I would think.

I personally like the look of the new forums.

One question: is it possible to unsubscribe/block threads or forums, e.g. some of the foreign languages, so new posts inside these threads/forums are not listed under 'New posts' ?

A filter on languages would be a start... They have filters for some other things, though not for the obvious, language, game etc.
