Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Personally, I don't like laptops. Gaming aside, I just find them too restrictive - especially if you're just using the rig only. I like a fulll size keyboard, a mouse and a bigger screen. I also use a desk at which to sit. Sure, you can buy all those peripherals but there's nothing quite like the hum of overworked fans and RGB shenanigans down by your knees :D

I bought mine to replace an older PC which was my secondary machine when I gave that to my brother. I don't actually use it much, it only gets used for EDO occasionally, though it is a teabagging workhorse at times. In the main it is a security blanket, comforting me that I have a machine if my main PC goes bottom-over-bosom.

The biggest issue with laptops for gaming (in my mind) is the misleading advertising, saying it has a RTX3060 for example when in fact it has the mobile version which is very much more max power limited - which is what caught my eye in that linked Acer Predator advert.

(I'm assuming I can make the laptop talk to the TV if I am ever allowed back in the house, but can get a monitor if needed - at least the (dry, decorated and heated) garage means I can store things without offending wife or kids at my presumption!)

I should think all have HDMI outputs - mine does and also I use the USB-C to drive a monitor when I want to have the larger screen.

Yep, you should be able to easily make the two communicate. Bluetooth would probably be the easiest method but an nice HDMI cable would do very nicely.

teabagging
Um... don't Google that! :D

As in, the linked Acer max power looked good? (Incidentally, 'bottom-over-bosom' is my new favourite expression!)

:ROFLMAO:

Yeah - I didn't seek out specs but if its GPU is 150w then that is good - many mobile gpus are like 80w (I think mine is around that) - so you get the gpu going power-limited and so slowing down.

phrase due to nanny filter. ;)
Ah, brilliant, thank you for the clarification - computer specs are literally just numbers on a page to me, sorry to say. Useless.
And lol hadn't thought of the nanny filter. But actually, I like the new version so much I'll use it anyway.

Good morning, all. Inordinately long time away, sorry, for which I can only apologise. Life took over somewhat, some deaths, some ensuing legal issues (we really should all hire a solicitor when we hit 50 and make sure that our affairs and wishes will make sense to those who follow), some business issues, some kids taking exams, some building work, all conspired to keep me away from much of my gaming and all of my fora. Hope you are all well?

Anyhoo - what am I up to? Squadron life was skittled by the console/PC split (we were mostly Xbox), although we have sent an advance party over to PC so the squadron still lives on, albeit somewhat reduced (we were #1 on Xbox with over 100 members six months before the split, have the shiny dashboard trophies to polish when feeling nostalgic) but now my life has cleared up a little (although eldest offspring takes A levels next month, so stress and worry are constant bedfellows!) I am back in the gaming saddle. What am I up to, game-wise?:

Two days ago I triggered the decommissioning of my beloved fleet carrier (the Templar's Rest, give her a flyby if you see her, she will be left marking a pristine world nearish to our homeworld, so I can still visit), in order to cash out and try the account port to PC. I will have just under 10bn if the decommissioning works (never tried it before!) so can resume squadron life on the PC side. Assuming I get a PC. To whit, ignore if you wish but can I ask a technical question, especially I guess of you UK chaps -

Will ED run on a laptop? And have you ever used box.co.uk or scan.co.uk? And would ED run on any of these, do you think, and why the massive disparity in price? And is £1500 a realistic budget for a gaming laptop to run ED? I do have a particular set of skills - some of them not a mile off Liam Neeson's on-screen ones - but sadly the hardware side of computers is nowhere near my wheelhouse. If any kind soul could point me at a £1500 laptop which would run ED (or tell me that I need to let the mothballs out of my wallet and quit dreaming) then it would be very much appreciated. I found these few but am flying in the dark without the talent or connection to The Force to get away with it. (And yes, needs to be a laptop ideally as I live six weeks a year in Portugal and would want to take it with me!! I'll also do a bit of work on it - price charts run on anything.)

Lovely to be back, and am serious about the PC switch, this time. Even have approval from 'er indoors!!

(And on the whole 'is Odyssey worth it' question, it's very subjective. Many love it. I tried it a few times and was underwhelmed, prefer walking around in other games which do it better, personally, so I am strictly a pilot in ED, but if you're even pondering it I'd dive in and try it. Majorities tend not to agree with my niche opinions on such things, anyway!!)
Hey, welcome back!

Built a DBX just for Exobiology; small footprint so I don't have to use the included SRV much, good view from the cockpit, large jump range (nearly 70lys) and cold running for scooping and fsd charging. Working well but it's confusing the authorities.

Ship rarely gets above 14% heat on the surface so this guy followed me around for 30-40 minutes. Previous planet I had a group of 3 watching me for 20 minutes or so. Getting kinda creepy now ...

I have been using laptops all the time I have played ED on PC, the first one was from PC Specialist and has performed valiantly for most of the years since I bought it in 2016 but performance really wasn’t up to running Odyssey so with it starting to get problems with the keyboard I got a new one from Razer both were bought via Amazon for the convenience of return and both are 17” screens so have a decent sized keyboard the old one even had a number pad.

Of the ones listed the Acer is probably the best but keep in mind that the mobile versions of the graphics card are not as powerful as the desktop version of the same model.

A nice thing about going the laptop route is not having to figure out if the monitor you like is going to work with tower sat under your test hoovering up all the dust.

I watched a YT video "review" of Ody ground CZs yesterday. It was interesting in that, to summarise, it viewed them as being disassociative with the rest of the game.

I could see what the reviewer was getting at but, for me, it just didn't feel that way.

Each to their own, I s'pose.

As the saying goes "one man's meat is another man"s poison" and Ody seems to similarly split opinion.

I love it. And the rest of Elite is still there anyway *

* I'm such a white knight :D
Diversification, good business model, keeping your eggs in different pies.

Internal sense/consistency is important for a game and I still cannot get over how a hand weapon cost more than a jump capable ship and why people are fighting over a small building using troops dropped from multiple spacecraft which logically can flatten the entire settlement by itself.
Its about keeping the infrastructure in tact???

USB and HDMI ports are your friends ;)

Now you can sell it to yourself as an essential rite of passage. The hurdles are the journey!
If the game isn't hard, I'll stop playing...

Nice screenie!

Hey everyone! Long time no read/write...

Glad to see this thread as busy as ever.

I've been out BGSing in an Anarchy system since the middle of February. I'm almost finished retreating the Federal Democracy which had been in control of the system when I arrived back then...Its been an excellent journey.

I've learned a lot about the BGS and how to manipulate it. But I'm glad its coming to an end soon. I'm getting stir crazy being tied to one location...I'm about to be free...again...
