I distinctly remember not wanting to shoot the people, too. I guess it's a slippery slope
When i started playing Elite some years ago it was all about the exploration, the mysteries, the detailed
simulation - just flying a ship was an incredible experience - it was a complete counterpoint to the good ol’ fps combat i’d merrily played for years on our venerable old UT2004 server… much as i love a bit of beer, pizza and happy fragging, i wanted to play something completely different… then, one day i saw a review of Elite Dangerous on Ars Technica - in fact, i just saw a pic from a Cobra’s cockpit and realised it was a new version of the 1984 game i recalled being very popular in our school’s computer lab at lunch breaks
So i got the game xmas 2017 and got busy, trading my way up to a ship i could explore with, then heading out towards my first Elite & access to Jameson Memorial… I also got into pirate/bounty hunting for a bit, because, well, if you can fly a ship & it has laserbeams and stuff… one might as well have a bit of fun with ship combat?
Still, for me Elite was mainly about space, mysteries (i began to encounter Guardian sites, and ultimately… Thargoids), exploration and a very detailed and experiential kind of gameplay… i took roleplay and ethics quite seriously - i would bounty hunt, but wetwork contracts turned my stomach…
Then, sometime in 2020 iirc, we heard of this new thing called Odyssey - the idea of an on-foot layer to all this sounded almost too good to be true!
…ok, so it had its teething problems at first - but it did add a whole other dimension to the game :]
So once again i headed out exploring, this time with genetic sampler in hand, to catalogue the galaxy’s thin-atmosphere organics… in fact it took almost the year before i even got started with settlements, Dominator suits and conflict zones…
Looking back now, it seems that it’s all come full circle - an ED CZ is almost a UT ONS match, but with more contemporary, nuanced gameplay …but also with considerably longer respawn time ;p
In fact I’m starting to ask the inevitable question: “just what was i thinking when i started all this?”
So i’m out exploring again - at least until something genuinely new & more interesting in the game calls me back… ;]
