Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I distinctly remember not wanting to shoot the people, too. I guess it's a slippery slope

You always such a fan of gun engineering Mr. Tyres but first see how effective the storebought G1-G3 is. Safest to shoot from the hip versus aiming down the sights

I decided to head down to the earthbubble. And pending survival, go to a couple of places down south. Heading along the plane at Y=-2000 then play nebula pinball with a dolphin way up high, camp out in the smojais. Head for the cat's eye. Head downtown and buy a mamba and 2T champagnes for a reward.

Hmm. I almost always go ADS when shooting.

When i started playing Elite some years ago it was all about the exploration, the mysteries, the detailed simulation - just flying a ship was an incredible experience - it was a complete counterpoint to the good ol’ fps combat i’d merrily played for years on our venerable old UT2004 server… much as i love a bit of beer, pizza and happy fragging, i wanted to play something completely different… then, one day i saw a review of Elite Dangerous on Ars Technica - in fact, i just saw a pic from a Cobra’s cockpit and realised it was a new version of the 1984 game i recalled being very popular in our school’s computer lab at lunch breaks :)

So i got the game xmas 2017 and got busy, trading my way up to a ship i could explore with, then heading out towards my first Elite & access to Jameson Memorial… I also got into pirate/bounty hunting for a bit, because, well, if you can fly a ship & it has laserbeams and stuff… one might as well have a bit of fun with ship combat?

Still, for me Elite was mainly about space, mysteries (i began to encounter Guardian sites, and ultimately… Thargoids), exploration and a very detailed and experiential kind of gameplay… i took roleplay and ethics quite seriously - i would bounty hunt, but wetwork contracts turned my stomach…

Then, sometime in 2020 iirc, we heard of this new thing called Odyssey - the idea of an on-foot layer to all this sounded almost too good to be true!

…ok, so it had its teething problems at first - but it did add a whole other dimension to the game :]

So once again i headed out exploring, this time with genetic sampler in hand, to catalogue the galaxy’s thin-atmosphere organics… in fact it took almost the year before i even got started with settlements, Dominator suits and conflict zones…

Looking back now, it seems that it’s all come full circle - an ED CZ is almost a UT ONS match, but with more contemporary, nuanced gameplay …but also with considerably longer respawn time ;p

In fact I’m starting to ask the inevitable question: “just what was i thinking when i started all this?” :D

So i’m out exploring again - at least until something genuinely new & more interesting in the game calls me back… ;]

I understand where you're coming from.

When I first tried the on-foot training scenario, I absolutely hated it. I just died. A lot.

Must admit i managed it the first time, even though i tried what i thought was a less obvious route into the base of brigands… and fell down the wall of that very large crater …i eventually made it into the base via a back door with almost no oxygen, managed to recharge and then killed them all, one by one… :]

Then I decided to mod a weapon. Not quite sure why...

And suddenly... well, look at me now: an a-jay, squared away, jarhead robot with the thousand yard stare. Sort of :D At this moment in time, it's still my favourite aspect of the game (although I'm taking some r&r for a short while).

…actually some good old fps can be a lot of fun - it’s actually not so much about leaving your scruples back in the ship, but getting into quite dynamic, fun gameplay - and an almost endless learning skills progression curve that delightfully defies boredom, imho… welcome to the club! ;)

My current favourite is shooting enforcers twice with the L-6 while jumping, then switching to the Executioner and headshotting them before landing. It's very rewarding when it comes off!
Enforcers are bullet sponges. I used to dual-wield Aphelions in CZ's and they took an age to take an Enforcer down. Nowadays, I swap to an AR-50 once their shield is depleted and they go all no life signs detected much quicker. Bodacious.

With sharpshooters, an Aphelion is enough and time is of the essence as they never miss - if you stand still (and sometimes hit you from a million miles away and you didn't even know they were there, the scum) - but their armour is "Tin Foil Suit of Just Barely Keeping Radiation Out" AC -10, STR -20, DEX +5

Enforcers are bullet sponges.
Hence the high-DPS weapons - everything just dies; enforcers require special measures.

I hate sharpshooters with a passion. I'm looking for an Intimidator with a scope - it acts as a choke, affording one hit kills out to surprising ranges.

Edit: Apparently it might no longer do that. I have to check. For science!

In and out of game I am reworking my controls, which may involve bricks under the wheels or a longer (& stronger) gas lift or maybe chair mounts.

Outside of the game I was watching the Olympics opening ceremony and was gratified and surprised that one of the statues that popped out of the river honoured my exploration/bio hunting hauler. OK it was actually a statue of the explorer and botanist the hauler was named for. Though I hadn’t expected them to look like a pantomime principal boy.

Hey I don't easy discount how badass my grandpa Rupee Noon was but his claim of beating over 500 high CZs in his G3 duds seems to have been a fish story. Or more likely, a mixed truth with some stretchers under the influence of Onionhead G. But,

He did do it in his storebought duds and felt like a sellout upgrading a tormentor to G4 near the end. Penny however has no such holdups nor anywhere the persistence nor the record. Kids these days eh?

Now cutting to the chase, where I guess Penny is chasing the bubble now from Sagittarius A. This was my pitiably brief stop there last week. Next time I got to get some real fireworks of that puppy. But it sure is massive inn't

DOLPH HELMET administered self repairs and leveled out near Y=-3000 to exit the lower left of the centre region into Empyrean Straits. Still a pleasant tour and taking basic scans of things with pit stops for rock collecting and flora blasting. I am beginning to fantasize of buying a non-cetaceous non-hauler for an exobiological world tour. Current mythical name NOXIOUS WEED INSPECTOR

Great stuff (y)

Would love to have posted my video of Sag-A* but just discovered that the digital film got stuck in the virtual camera ;p

Translation: OBS has apparently been having even more encoder issues than it was reporting, and my reels to and from the centre and up to the void hearts today are slideshows…

my own screwup ultimately, but i guess, for once, i was more enjoying being an explorer than a photographer & checking my daily rushes….

Oh welll…

ED uninstalled i need a break.

I have OBS somewhere, but never came to set it up to be able to record stuff with it.
My videos are all captured with the recorder of the XBox game bar.
