Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I logged in to check where the carrier was and I noticed discoveries being made as I was in the hanger, like when you travel through a system. Am I collecting data as a passenger?

Not that I'd expect many creds from that.
If you're a passenger in a ship and you get close enough to a body to 'scan' is, you get discoveries.

It probably shouldn't do that, but it does.

I just love jumping into a system and finding you're practically inside a secondary star. Good job the Mandalay runs cool.

Is it just me? When I exit the overcharge on the SCO, I always hit a gravity well.
Gravity Well (formerly Slow Down) can be triggered by your ships speed being too fast for the ‘shape’ of space usually this is caused by entering the gravity well caused by some more massive body distorting space. But when we drop out of Overdrive we are going faster than the FSD can go in that bit of space which is so like the effect of a gravity well that it triggers the alert.

Definitely not just you.

I passed through one a couple of days ago, as the jump was finishing, at the point where you approach the main star the star just kept expanding till it filled the screen then disappeared and the main star appeared, (red it was), when I checked the radar and FSS'd there was a secondary star very close behind me.

Ah. Thanks!

I have resisted spending any ARX on a ship, because honestly I wish it wasn't a thing. It still bothers me, the whole concept of paying RL cash for ships.

But the community seems to have accepted it, so who am I to buck the tide, right?

The Cobra MKV comes available in a couple weeks, and I'm considering returning to the bubble to get one. It looks like a very nice exobiology ship, and it might give me a reason to spend some time.

Decisions. :)

I know exactly what you mean. But I justified it to myself on the basis that I have had years of gameplay with no need to spend any further cash. In terms of what I have had out of it, this game is a bargain, the biggest bargain of my gaming life, despite encompassing an enormous variety of games over the past decades (which, oddly enough, began in the 1980's with Elite!). So I figured it was a nice way to give something back to the developers, to encourage them that it is worth continuing to write new content for this game. I felt better that it is not 'play to win', as there is no winning and the ships become available in game a while later. So I made my first-ever in-game cash purchase and bought the T8 - was looking for a more interesting outpost hauler anyway. Have not looked back, love it and happy with the decision. With a specific role in mind for the new ship, I think you will be, too.

I have sort of compromised in that while I have bought ships for Arx the Arx were bought nearly two years ago so what I spend them on has no financial impact. The Cobra V will clean me out though so I will have to consider what I do next. Plus there have been hints of paint I want as well so the Cobra might have to wait a few months or I might have to pay for more Arx.

If you do buy a Cobra V for Arx you can deploy it anywhere you are in the game as long as there is a Shipyard this includes your FC if you have one or anyone else’s if they have fitted the Shipyard Module. So don’t let that force you back to the bubble.

I was uneasy with it at first, then I realised; Elite doesn't have any subscription costs. If it doesn't find ways to tempt a payment or two out of each player annually, it's going to struggle.

I sort of do think it should be cosmetics only, but... if having a 3 month period on each new ship where it's pay-to-access means there actually are new ships, then I prefer this to having none.

Edit: side note, bring back the Chrome paint jobs (the shiny ones) and the lunar tiger commander suit to tempt more money out of me 😸 Not sure I see the point of limited time cosmetics in a game where almost nobody sees anybody else's cosmetics. We're getting self-satisfaction, not style points...

I think the way FDev handles this is really good. Even the prebuilt ships are far from being pay-to-win, which I think is the right way to do it.

I think the same. I wish I could spend some money to buy some Arx.

Exactly. Creating these ships isn't cheap if you don't want to create a kitbash of existing parts or make a copy of an existing ship with just some internal layout changes.

Cosmetics... To be honest, I struggle a little with the livery choices. For some, I wish I could apply them to other ships, too, others just don't cut the mustard for me.

I just logged in to make sure I remembered how to fly my ship. It's been a month or so since I played, heh. I had to update all my 3rd party stuff (EDDiscovery, Elite Observatory, etc), but everything seems to be working.

The system I happened to be in is an undiscovered place, so I took off to scan it. It turned out to have just 1 bio signal on 1 planet. Observatory told me it could be either a Bacterium Auresis or a Stratum Techtonica. One is worth 5 million credits, the other 95 million.

I got the 5 million :p

Cool little planet, though.

I do think there's a lot of "meh" livery options for the price. Some of that is personal taste I guess, like I don't really want a neon palm tree paint job but maybe others do 😹

The premium ones, e.g. Chrome and Midnight Black, I would consider an "all ships" pack for 2-3x the price of one. I would be more likely to stump up the money if I felt like I could theme my fleet with it, no matter which ship I pull out of the hangar today.

Meanwhile don't get me started on the cost of suit visuals. Imma pick up one or two on discount, but they are still quite expensive for how often I will actually see them.

Yeah, that would be nice.
I could see me spending a few hours in a livery editor, though. Even if I had to pay Arx for it.
