Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

1. The graphics are darker than in Horizons
2. Where are the "first discovered" and "first mapped by" tags? I looked for them in the system maps and I see none
1. Yeah, I had to adjust some settings cos the NPC pilot names were not showing up well on the comms panel.

2. It doesnt pop up by itself in the info panel anymore when you mouse over the planet in system map. You have to call up the info panel from the right menu (right menu pops up only after you select an object afaik) after you select the planet. Obviously, this is much slower. I dont like the change either. Fixing what wasnt broken.

Meanwhile, I muted the in-game music and just play the original Blade Runner soundtrack via spotify on my PC instead. Fits the darkish setting at the outpost bar much better than the crappy music the bartender always chooses. Hell, it fits painite mining and deep space SC better too.

A question for the more experienced space-leggers. I have no upgraded weapons or suit right now, the ground missions offered to me are Threat Level 4. In an un-engineered ship, a Threat 4 is big trouble. Is it the same for ground missions? Also, what happens if I fly to a settlement/planet, land my 1 billion ship and die on foot? What happens to my 1 billion ship? Do I re-spawn back on the ship or at the station?

....
  1. What if you remember did you alter to fix that?
  2. I am afraid a lot of the new UI stuff is like that more icon based and feels like much more clicks required, I am not sure how much dislike is due to the new UI not being what we have grown used to over the years or it being less efficient.

1. I upped the Gamma a bit and also the HUD brightness level in the Graphics option page. I think it helped a bit but I was specifically trying only to fix the NPC name in comm box (the pale orange they used blended in with the black of space).

2. More clicks = less efficient. I think its logical. Its like my rant on modern cars, why do I need to punch a touch screen thru 2 or 3 menus when a physical button solves it with one tap/click/twist.

1) it looks better (in the minds of the designers)
2) it matches the expectation of the millenial customers who are used to doing everything by tapping on a smartphone screen (at least in the minds of the equally millenial designers)
3) a new user feeling/UI can be done simply (from the POV of the designers) in software instead of actually designing and building new buttons and a new faceplate
4) reliable buttons are expensive
5) all the button does nowadays is to send an electrical signal to a box somewhere in the car, so why not cut out the middleman (and the cost for the button, and the cost and space for the wiring) if you already have the (touch)screen in there for the radio/satnav in any case

If you get the impression that I don't especially like automotive UI designers, you're not entirely wrong.

That is all in preparation for self-driving cars. In the end it will be like the screens in commercial airliners - an info and entertainment screen, where the job of driving the car is left to an auto-pilot most of the time. So physical buttons would be a waste, because you aren't doing this kind of stuff anymore in future, your auto-pilot will be in control. I just hope that the auto-pilot is aware of that a freaking kangaroo is not getting out of the way, whatsoever - and avoids it.

There is much stuff automated nowadays which was deemed too complicated in the past - an example is the automatic in my VW Amarok - even in an off-road situation this automatic is doing fine, I never expected before that an automatic gear shift can handle 4x4 tracks that excellently. But it just does, no need for gear shifts and differential control by hand.

Odyssey has it's flaws (STILL no carrier jumping!), but it does look pretty:

I am still waiting for Odyssey to finish downloading. I have checks 15 hours left to go, providing I don't get data throttled in 3 hours when Verizon wakes up. IF I get data throttled, I'll be back down to 2 Mbps and will not be in game till Saturday sometime. Right now I just got bumped up to 14.8 Mbps and then it dropped down to 1.2 Mbps XD My mileage varies you see.

Dont worry, after one week and fartillion of 30min game time trash reviews, everything will come back to normal.

Noob question.
Can I select a star system and switch to its system map to plot the route directly to something within?
To say I hate the new UI would be an understatement but this is just taking a wee.

You could in the Alpha* - just the annoyance is you have to use the RHS sidebar to open the system map.

* I have not run pewpewdyssey yet - I did let the thing install yesterday and update today.

4 is very true.
One of my issues with touch screen controls for things like cars is you have to actually look at them to operate something which means you aren’t looking at what your car is doing.

Years and years ago someone said that airliners would soon have a flight crew of two a human and a dog, the dog was there to keep the human away from the controls and the human was there to feed the dog. Hasn’t happened yet but that could be down to unions or lawyers.

You need to have the system map either by its being a known system or having been there and FSSed it it can be done in Odyssey the system map icon is towards the bottom of the ones that appear on the right of the map and I used it just yesterday afternoon to get to my current location.
So the capability has the same restriction as in Horizons it’s just that the UI has changed.

I could do that yesterday in Odyssey and you will probably be laughing at me, but i like the new UI more heh. I am probably used to having a ton of icons for specific things from EvE Online.

Left side are Galaxy Filters, Right Side are System Specific filters. That is at least my impression

A silly, probably obvious question., if I may...

I bought Odyssey, but I don't really want to install it at this point. I note that Horizons is a separate client and can still be used, which is great though.

If I start up the launcher, can I still just run Horizons as usual, and not install Odyssey?

I've not had any spare time to go and play for a few weeks, so I've no idea what is or isn't possible at this point 🙃
