Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I need to stop stealing things.

Took a mission to a planet 200kLS away (should've looked at the distance, I know!), got to the crate I wanted then immediately ignored it as I spotted to some graphene. I was sure noone could see me...

Suddenly, I'm under fire and sprinting for safety. Again. Mission failed.

The thing is, I don't mind stealing from settlements as the residents with their abrupt, rude and unfriendly 'tood makes me want to give them a hot lead enema. When I get a shotgun, I might just embark on such an endeavour.

You can mount 7 missiles racks on a Fed Gunship. And play Ride of The Valkyries on your speakers. Just saying.

I am not sure if they tweaked some stuff with the latest patch. I have been taken underfire at least twice with no warning or scan demand pop-up. I din do nuffink..

Greetings!

I am still in the Synaisa sector, focusing on systems that are at least 2800 LY above the plane-so far I have scanned 100 previously undiscovered systems in that sector.

There are some stars that are one way destinations with a conventional ship-you can reach them with neutron boost but you’ll never come home alive on your own (without a FC to rescue you) since the destination star has no neutron star to use as a boost to jump back and is out of range even with premium jumponium. Virtually all of the 3000ers in this sector fit this category.

Regarding exobiology, if the planet has only bacterial colonies, I tend to skip them. It takes a very long time to find the three required samples for these.

As for neutrons, I have found lots of previously undiscovered ones in this sector alone. It looks like non sequence objects like black holes and neutrons, as well as very hot stars like O and B types, abound in the center of the galaxy.

Regarding the neutrons, one poster stated that they can be made to look like in Horizons by turning off FX in the graphics settings. I tried this and it worked. But at times the game crashes when using the full spectrum scanner, and the galactic map tends to flicker at times.

Odyssey is a great concept but it can and should improve. Still, I could not have imagined the progress Elite would make when I played it in my Commodore 128 (in C64 mode) in 1986. At that time it looked gorgeous and was instantly hooked. I spent a lot of time playing it after homework and chores were done. But I only reached “dangerous.” I could not imagine that one day it would be possible to land on planets and travel across a whole Milky Way.

Fast forward to 2019. When I first played ED, I was still thinking that it was like an improved version of the original (I knew nothing regarding the added features). So I thought that the galaxy map was just one of the 8 galaxies like in the original, and that the ships were fixed at 7 LY jump range like in the original, just to name a few. But as I learned about the game ( and yes, it does have a very steep learning curve, as I found out), I really grew fond of it.

I remember the wonder of playing those old 80s games. The graphics might have been monochrome and basic but maybe because I was a kid, the imagination went wild and the immersion somehow felt more intense. Much much more rich and intense than any 8k VR or mutlimedia ultra ninja trick that modern technology can reasonably hope for.

There was just something magical. My fondest memories of gaming was driving the highways in Autoduel* with 80s music playing from the cassette deck.

Lets see what 2040 will bring us from the gaming world. One thing I am sure is that we wont be able to play offline.

*I still dream that someday someone can do for Autoduel what ED is doing for Elite 1984. That Car Wars franchise is sitting wasted for too long.

There isn't a graphics card or CPU built, now or in the near future, that will make things look better than that the imagination can produce.

I remember well when my son was quite young, he and I played a game together, some sort of marines fighting game, the name escapes me. But it was on a floppy disk, and I upgraded my computer to the latest and greatest that used 3.5" floppies instead of the old 5.25" ones. So we could not play that game anymore.

After a couple years or so, I wound up getting an external 5.25" drive. He was all excited that we might be able to play the old game again.

So I booted it up, and we tried playing it, and after a bit he said, "I guess I remember it being better than it was."

Such is progress.

I have gone back and checked out a few of my old favorites, using simulators and whatnot to run these ancient games, and yeah...I'm spoiled by the games of today. :p

Puppy update: my new co-pilot is doing well, but my gaming time is rather decreased. She requires a lot of supervision right now. Yay?! (she's adorable, though) :p

Went mining.

It seems there's been a tweak on prospector limpets - you almost have to stop before launching one as otherwise they seem to crash into the cargo hatch.

EDIT I'm sure it wasn't quite so strict before the last patch.

It seems my little copilot arrived just in time to distract me from Odyssey. I'm in a sort of waiting frame of mind, hoping that the next patch will really fix things up. I've been having a bit of trouble carving out time for EDO this week :)

I want to do some more exploration, see some new vistas, make some discoveries, but at the moment the messed-up textures are driving me batty. I can't stand how they look, and sooo many planets are affected.

But, this still looks good to me :)
