Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Messing around with graphics settings to see if I could improve performance... 48 fps on a surface, in external view. This used to be more like 20-25 😸

The magic setting was this...

But I don't really know what it does.

I also got multiple CTDs after this, but I think that's because I've been undervolting my graphics card 😹 I will sneak the volts up a bit and see if it stabilises. Side note; I've noticed that in space I get 60fps with tiny percentages of GPU utilisation... planetary surface, maxed out.

Also I randomly discovered the West Leeds Yacht Club, a player faction that sounds like it might be based in my neck of the woods... Or it could be Leeds, Alabama, near Birmingham, Alambama. Because America never was great at coming up with names 😼
Try, upscaling to normal and sampling to x0. 85 or less, no ultra for you, stick with medium to high general settings in most places.

all that does is render the game in a lower resoultion then upscales it to your monitor resolution,it a neat trick to stop rendering at high resolution and helps the gpu

I was wondering that... but I'm not sure what it's rendering at prior to upscaling. The HUD isn't quite as sharp as I'd like, but on the whole the smoothness in planetary environments might be worth the hit.

If only 2020-2021 had had GPUs available for a normal price! But I refuse to pay 3x RRP so here I am with this old 1060 super 😾 At least it's smooth in combat, because it's only planets and station interiors that drop below 60 fps...

I was doing that before... this setting appears much faster and I honestly can't tell a quality difference either way.

Odyssey was not good for my fps on planets. If I didn't rather like doing the odd surface scavenger run, I'd be questioning whether I wanted to keep running it vs going back to EDH.

I am old fashioned so like to stick to the advice of always having 3 times the purchase price available when you buy a new ship, which would suggest you should wait until you have about a million credits before going for the Cobra.
Ooooh, that's a very good point, well made. Never fly without rebuy and the three rule.

I tend to forget that as CR are no longer an issue for me so it is important to remember when starting out.

Thanks for the reminder @aRJay !

Have not been back to Ed horizons since moving to oddy. Lots of choices to grind for every thing.... 🤔🤪👍🍻

Where did you purchase the Hauler? I'm in the bubble. Will have 300k credits when you read this and I need a ship more capable than the Sidewinder. I will consider the Hauler or Adder with my current amount of credits. Thanks for any help.
If you're talking about the Bubble https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Core_Systems, you're talking about 20,000 inhabited systems with close to half a million stations....
It won't help you much if I told you that you can get a Hauler at Ray Gateway in Diaguandri at a 15% discount if that means you need to travel 200 ly to get there - and maybe be unable to reach it at all in an unmodified Sidney due to its poor jump range.
So, tell us which system you're in right now, and someone will be able to find your best option.

I only read that 20k/500k stat recenty. I wonder if anyone has visited them all. Ought to have a rank - doing the lot would make you elite in "urbanics/suburbanics"or something.

Doubt it... I'm still finding (uninhabited) bubble systems where I can get first footfall, so there's a lot of places commanders just aren't going. ~18 months ago I even found an unscanned planet in an inhabited bubble system, can only assume nobody had been there since surface scanners! Those little 20k pop systems on the edge seem very ignored.

Got a hunch that 90% of players go to the systems google recommends to do grinds ¬_¬

Hmm.
But don't you get first footfall even if I've already visited the planet in Horizons?
And hasn't Oddity allowed access to bodies that were previously unlandable?
I don't know all the ins and outs of it.
I'm still learning Horizons after... how many years?!

Was going to continue pummelling pirates on the Tanya account but:

Time to fire up the DBX and poke around.

Oh yeah, there's first discovered, first scanned, and first footfall. It's been a while since I could get a first scanned, and I've never had first discovered within the bubble.

Yet. There might be one out there that nobody's ever honked while passing through 😹 But whichever you get, you get your name on the planet for that, so I still go out of my way if I notice one that I can tag.

AFAIK, there's only about 5% of bodies that were previously unlandable and now are; it's a very narrow range of atmospheric densities.

I don’t know about first footfall but yes Odyssey let’s you land on some planets that were inaccessible with Horizons.

There is some rule also, in the more populated systems, non of the planets are available for first footfall. I am not sure whats the threshold/trigger.

The way credits are being handed out now, I am half expecting that he be asking about the Anaconda by his next post.

I'm in Alliance space at the moment and one of the FC voices has an accent I can't quite place. It may have a slight - very slight - South African twang but I may be wrong. Any ideas what it is?
