Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

They don't need a reason, there is a fix; make the docking computer's values for the lateral thrusters match the actual values for the lateral thrusters.

I don't even care whether they improve the thrusters or not, but the computer should not destroy the ship due to a data mismatch 😔
I am not 100% convinced that the docking computer issue isn’t down to the computers taking the opportunity afforded by the thruster issue to continue their homicidal campaign against us.

As I have been bitten more by the other effects of the weakened thrusters I would prefer that to be the fix rather than just dealing with one of the symptoms of the problem.

There is a better fix - well two routes to the same fix:

1. Turn off auto-launch

2. Fit a standard DC instead.

Yeah, I know that's a bit "git gud" which I deplore but seriously, there is no issue undocking manually if you use the provided graphical indicators and avoid adjusting pitch.

1. Turn off auto-launch
I once tried turning off auto-launch because I thought it would be more fun to launch the ship from a space station manually. The major problem I encountered immediately is that ships don't have rear view mirrors, or any easy way to quickly check if someone is behind you. (I suppose you could switch to the free camera mode but that's less than ideal.) Thus, when launching manually I sometimes collide with another ship that's behind me, because I can't see it.

I do. I can fly the ship just fine on manual.

But I shouldn't have to. The autopilot should not crash the ship - that is a game bug, and a bad one, and FDev should be arsed to fix it. It is absurd that it's been over a year unresolved with this feature not working properly.
I like to think that the autolanding/autolaunch isn't actually a computer that's flying the ship. Instead, it's a system that allows the flight controllers in the space station / settlement to remotely control your ship so they can land it (I think one of the flight control messages you get when you start the autolanding is something along the lines of "you can hand over controls now"). And sometimes some flight controller is just incompetent, drunk, or probably both.

1. "Radar" screen

2. Surround sound

(First takes time to be happy with, second is really great*, I can hear ship moving behind me - no sound means it is not moving, even if there is a radar icon behind).

* Elite's soundscapes are excellent - well except for the lift muzak - it is isolated too high up for my liking (though it is probably OK in non-surround).

1. Turn off auto-launch
Due to the fact that some ships come without a docking computer and most stations only have the standard version at hand, I every once in a while have to leave a station manually. I survived so far, but I don't like it.
My main issue is that, even with the camera limpet, I don't find a viewpoint that provides me with the necessary sense of size to get the ship out of a station without decorating the mailslot and the toastrack with some scrapemarks or getting mildly stuck on some potruding feature of the station. Not having control over all of the ships thrusters doesn't help in that regard, either. (My controller doesn't have enough buttons / triggers to use all of them at the same time, which meant that the standard setup put a toggle on one of the stick press actions. Which doesn't work that great, as you often will accidentially press the stick while frantically trying to keep your sights on an enemy during a fight or trying to evade an interdiction. Thus I had to relocate this to a key on my keyboard, which is not really in reach while using the controller.)

!. The radar screen still has some secrets to unveil to me, thus its use in tight spaces like a coriolis is limited.

2. Surround sound is great, though I often find it difficult to accurately locate ships around me in those echo halls...

I agree that the soundscape is great, very immersive.
I tend to turn off the music in games, as I find it more distracting than helping with the immersion.

You don't need to use external camera - the game provides an icon for the centre of the station that you use to raise yourself up to the centre-line of the bay, as long as you don't adjust pitch (so you stay parallel to the station axis), just upwards and lateral thrusters and rotation as required to align yourself... I made a short video for someone a little time ago to show this alignment method - maybe that would make it clear...

You can take even all the big ships out without any scraping using that visual cue which the game provides.

I'm back into this little 8ugger! load of fun at HazRes.

I think you don't understand my issue. I am simply not used to navigate solely on instruments. I need to know where my ship ends.

The height usually isn't a problem, but I don't have a feeling for how wide my ship is, thus clonking into walls I can't see. If the radar would be able to show more than a little dot for the station, maybe something similar to the landing pad graphics for the mail slot, then I surely would be able to leave the station without having to pay for station repairs and repainting my ship afterwards.
And I think I mentioned before that I have to use a more than awkward workaround for switching between lateral thrusters and rotation. I have to take at least one hand off the controller and reach for the (pushed back) keyboard to push a key to toggle between these two options.

Good demo 👍 …tho admittedly this is with a Cobra, not a Cutter - let alone Beluga or T7 ;]

Great idea this 👍

If they run into the back of you, that's technically their fault. Won't stop getting a fine for it though!

Well, here is a quick video I just made using an Imperial Cutter - I don't have a Beluga in any fleet and my account with a Federal Corvette is out farming Guardian weapon and ship blueprints so the cutter was the largest at hand. I do have a T9 in my FC but that is out towards Colonia.

If you need to see it using a Corvette, T9 or even a Beluga ( I can always buy one) then I can do it but this Cutter should do. Now that I think on it maybe I should have done it in a 'conda to prove you can exit without scraping your bridge or keel. Maybe another day, I need those blueprints. (P.S. Best watched at HD - it is posted at 1440)

Shame it was a busy port but you can see the radar showing a ship coming from behind and to the right, unfortunately OBS and YouTube don't do surround sound.
