Grats!

I did my first AX ground mission today, a reactivation mission in a Thargoid controlled area.

These missions show up in your ship mission board, when you are in a system under Thargoid Invasion or Thargoid Alert (I went to an Invasion system, HIP 19157). There have to be Military settlements in neighboring systems that are owned by one of the factions present in the station. It's hard to search for that, so I just went with finding a system in Invasion state and hoping for the best. I got lucky, and there they were.

Payouts are pretty high (for an on-foot mission) and material rewards were good. These missions take a bit of doing, so I guess that's why. It's still a bit anemic, if you ask me :)

After accepting one of the missions, I headed out to the abandoned settlement (in a Thargoid controlled system). I took my Challenger because it's set up for AX combat against Scouts, so it's already very tough and pretty fast.

I was interdicted twice on the way to the settlement, but I just outran the attackers.

Once at the settlement, I tried to find a flat place to land that was about 1.5km away and out of sight behind some terrain. I landed ok and got into my SRV. I had a Scorpion with me, but a Scarab would have been better on that terrain. Anyway I dismissed my ship and drove the SRV closer to the settlement. I parked it 800m out and walked the rest of the way in.

There were Revenants patrolling, so I watched for a few minutes to determine their general patterns. I had to locate the PWR building (it is on the left here, and the door is on the other side, facing the courtyard).

Once I located it, I carefully snuck past the Revanants and sliced open the panel. This was the most tense moment in the mission, because the Revenants were right behind me the whole time. They did not see me, and I got into the building in time.

Once I got in there, and made my way to the power room, I discovered that the game had NOT auto-loaded the mission power regulator into my backpack. It was back on the ship!
Screenshot 2023-05-31 083016.jpg

My SRV had been destroyed by one of the patrolling Thargoid ships overhead. I got a message. Yay. I think I will not bother with the SRV next time. It doesn't take that long to walk, and my Challenger is tough enough I could have landed closer.

Sooo...I had to run back outside the base, get some distance away (1.5km again), and recall my ship hoping the circling Thargoid would not notice. I ran over and got the stupid Power Regulator, recharged my suit, and dismissed the ship again (it got shot at, but it's a tough ship so no worries).

Then I ran all the way back to the base. The door was already open so I just had to zip inside without being seen again. No problemo.

After the power was back on, I tested the Karma L6 out on some Revenants. StealthBoy said that a G3 Karma L6 would one-shot Revanants. This is important because if you don't one-shot them they scream and alert all the others, who then swarm you. You don't want that.

The info was correct. I have an unmodified Karma L6 that I bought at Grade 3, and it worked a treat. Took those things out like nothing, and none of the others noticed.

I finished the mission (had to pick up an item from a locked container), and turned it in.

Interesting you used an L-6. Did it make any difference whether it has noise suppression on it? Do suit quieter footsteps help with these missions?

Food for thought although I still doubt I'll be partaking.

No, the Revenants do not respond to noise. I didn't even crouch, I just ran everywhere.

Like I said, the L6 is perfect for this, because it takes them out in one shot.

Not that you actually need to kill them, anyway. It's not terribly difficult to avoid them. Stealth for the win :)

Careful with this - if they are close together, the rest will notice if you kill one...

...though you can use an Executioner to do a one-shot relatively clean kill btw - if you hit the red light on their tails ;]

Stealth is definitely the quickest / cleanest way - unless you want to have a bit of fun playing them ofc :)

If the material rewards included, say, 5 genetic research, it would be worth it. It's a lot harder when you're trying to be careful not to undermine factions you're supporting.
Congratulations, nice job. (y) I'm very close to Elite in combat, it's been quite the slog, two rebuys and a half dozen "get the heck out of dodge runaways".
Only two? I'd say you've done extremely well. I've killed myself by ramming asteroids more times.

Well I have reached Colonia after a gentle stroll in my Carrier with side trips and Bio hunting in a Hauler it took me about 25 days.

I was a little surprised at how unfamiliar flying in an inhabited system felt until I checked and found out that I was out in the black for over a month before heading off to Colonia.

What worked out well was that during that period I had done some mining and had enough Osmium lying around to unlock my first engineer out here.

I will have to keep reminding myself that I am not going to get first discovery bonus so should be more discriminating about what samples I go for.

One of the first things I did ended up going weird, I had found the Haulers fuel capacity worrying while Bio hunting a system so I added an additional fuel tank when I arrived. Flew back to the carrier and was impressed that it hadn’t used enough from the new tanks to need topping off. I then set the carrier to jump to Tir and then found I couldn’t do some things from the cockpit of my ship. It turns out my ship wasn’t on the carrier but presumably back near the base where I did the outfitting. Perhaps it was just a glitch and a re log would fix it.

No I ended up on foot in my carrier in Tir so took an escape capsule back to the last location which was fortunately the base where I added the fuel tank, escape capsules are dull, at the base my ship wasn’t present but the nice people at Inter Astra could get it for me in 5 minutes. It was with great relief that I jumped back to my Carrier where all the things that hadn’t worked because I wasn’t really sat in my ship now worked properly.

So what I am intending to do for a while is unlock the local (ship) engineers and hunt round the Pioneer stores for scoped versions of some of my weapons. Oh and get used to seeing other ships around.

I liked Colonia while I was there but the one thing that stopped me staying - probably long term - was the lack of tritium.

Haven't been playing for a while, and recently I bought an old electric guitar, which is "stealing" my time now. I realized that if I had used the time that I have spent flying spaceships, playing the guitar instead, I would be a "semi-Clapton" by now.

The current game doesn't really ring my bell anymore, so if I'm slowly fading away, I just thought that it might be a good time to say "Goodbye, and thanks for all the fish". Playing ED in VR has been an astonishing experience, and it's been a rare pleasure knowing you all. I wish you all the best. Maybe I'll be back one day, if the rock star ambitions fail, and I might also take the occasional recreational spin in the Mamba just to see if Betelgeuse finally went supernova.

Have fun :alien:7

Congratulations and welcome to my world. Here's mine:

Guitar Wall.jpg

My first was the Stratocaster (Second from right). I bought it back in 1986 and got a really good deal on it. The second was the Epiphone Les Paul (Second from left). It is, by far, the best sounding and most versatile guitar of them all since I put in the TV Jones pickups and the Jimmy Page wiring rig. 24 tones out of that one guitar.

The black Frankencaster on on the far right I built for my daughter. She's a huge Kurt Cobain fan, I it's an exact replica of his sans the neck (right down to the same oil filled caps, blender switch wiring and Seymour Duncan pickups). The neck is off an old Chandler (San Francisco) guitar I had back in the 90's that got destroyed. Long story.

I'll leave you with what my father once told me: A guitar is like the perfect woman - it will never ask anything more of you than you can give it, but it will give back to you EVERYTHING that you put into it.

Good luck and keep playing.

Well, gee. Have fun out there, and be safe, and always have a pick in your pocket. And get some new strings, those are so old they have no high end at all! :)

I, too, am a guitarist and singer. Music's always been part of my life (I still play every Friday, doing a Livestream for my few but adoring fans). It enriches you, for sure.

I'm sure you'll be back to ED at some point, even for just a visit. We will miss you on the forums.

Here's one of my guitars, to send you on your way.

I'll reserve a stool at my carrier bar should you happen on by in the future. Good luck!
