Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I discovered recently that random friends in the friends list is a big no no, I cleaned mine out recently and that has really helped. I'm now instanced with nice people rather than toddlers. Other than that, there was a calm period just recently, because most of the worst offenders went off on a carrier tour of tourist spots in the galaxy, they just got back and are likely making up for lost time; Which might explain your perceived increase in frequency. I've noticed a marked quite period whilst they were gone, and I'm based right in the centre of the bubble next to an engineers system, but also as mentioned have just cleared out my contacts.
My friends list only contains some people from this forum, mainly some regualrs from this thread and a few Buckyball racers.
Most of the places I frequently visit are close to one of the engineers, if not in the same system.
How long was this calm period, by the way?
I'm wondering because these three ganks were the first ones I experienced ever since I started flying in open about a year ago.

Oh a week or so. From what I can gather, the thing with the fiends list is that these folks use alt accounts, so one instance is used as a radar whilst the killing is done from another account. I think picked up a few rotten apples whilst learning to fly PvP with some lovely folk who are engaged in that activity.
Now I've decided to just make sure that I do interact regularly with the people who I befriend, and not gather contacts who I never interact with.

I had one ganker who knew exactly where I would fly to from the system that they ganked me in, faster than could have been done with a wake scanner and they never carry wake scanners. The only way that could happen is either they are stalking from a contact and have already seen where I tend to go, horrible thought, or they just followed my friend icon on their radar from another account.

That was one of the reasons why I wiped the list.

I'm still engineering, minimaxing my krait builds by getting into the saddle and finding out what they can do! :D

... On my explorer adventurer phantom, I've just upped the shields from 700Mj to 1000Mj because 700 was not enough to protect me from a ganker who waiting outside my corolis home station with a fully combat fitted python mkii armed to the teeth with frag cannons, and the shield could not survive them repeatedly pulling the trigger from point blank range as I few out.

Takes a lot of skill to just pull the trigger that fast from point blank range without needing to do a thing. [said with a heavy does of irony in the tone]
Another option if your build can stand it is to go to 2 pips in Sys 4 pips in Eng and hit full throttle and boost as you go through the slot the Phantom can be a faster ship than the Python II and can boost more frequently to get you out of effective Frag range.

Staying close to the station and manoeuvring to get it between you and them should also help.

If they don’t watch their range and you have report crimes on the station might get involved.

Hi :)

I wonder if they even take up the effort to scan you/look at your equipment before attacking you...
Okay, two occasions caught me in my newly bought Python Mk II, with weapons and all, but almost completely unengineered, more PvE-oriented.
But one time, I was in my at that time shieldless iEagle, trying to compete in a BRC race... With how my life is at te moment, that ruined the only day where I would have been able to complete a run or two, as it completely threw me off my focus.
Most times I've been attacked by players it's more or less instant, no social dialog, whether they scan you beforehand is debatable, it varies.
I've befriended quite a few players in the past, sadly most of them haven't played Elite for months if not years now. Most of them were a friendly bunch though there were a couple I befriended after being ganked by them that I kept on my list out of curiosity. One person in particular ganked me in Deciat while I was in an unarmed Courier. I was actually testing out that system with the intention of seeing if the tales of nefarious commanders in that system were true...obviously they are or were! :D
It's interesting, this one particular commander stays in or around Deciat and never seems to leave the surrounding systems / area, (when they are in the game the same times as myself) that's where I can usually find them on my friends list. (if I wanted to)....so I imagine for most of the time they are 'career' criminals. I sometimes see this player in live CG systems too which leads me to think they might practice this form of gameplay there too in open, that's ok, there are various ways to avoid them. It just seems pointless to me as there's so much more to enjoy within this game imho....each to their own I guess as the saying goes. 🤷‍♂️
I don't do much open / socialising in the game most of the time anyway*, if I do CG's I'll mostly play in solo. While I'm in the bubble at the moment I might re-visit some of these systems in open in a cheap ship, no weapons ect. just to test out ganker activity and the methods / tactics they use, and how to avoid ....might be fun as well as gathering some useful information! :sneaky:
*The in game chat system I personally find a bit cumbersome too, which to be fair maybe due to my lack of use of it, but usually it's also because when there are many players in a system chatting the text gets updated so quick I can't type fast enough to reply or send messages. :ROFLMAO:

Since we can't name and shame - a certain religious figure? There are a few PvPers around who will actually respond to a friend request and give you a rematch, and the location notification always goes both ways.
If they just kill me and don't respond, they go immediately ro my naughty list.

And - I'm not talking about actual RP pirates. The ones I had interactions with at CGs proved true to their words, nobody got hurt.

Isn't it true that gankers have multiple accounts therefor generating more revenue and making it less likely that Fdev would do anything about it. We law abiding citizens have no choice but to go solo, I think they have a tiny manhood problem.

The gankers I encountered so far were already offline by the time I returned from the rebuy screen...

Got to say, I'm enjoying the PP2 thing. I'm still doing what I want to do (Core Mining and bit of RES bounties a bit or Rares) but doing it in a different way. There was a way to do Core Mining and Rares for max credits that no longer fits with PP2 if you're optimising the merits. No point going to the same Core mining spot now as its in the wrong power. So I'm also paying more attention to System economies than I did, I can see I'll have to develop an interest in system states too. I've joined the Discord for my power and made some contributions to the standing orders but I have largely sat in an adopted system and have been very slowing pushing the control level up.

It seems like Observatory is going through some changes. I completely understand and respect the dev on this and have to give him kudos and rep for swallowing the costs up till now.

Unfortunately, the tool no longer does what I want it to which is a shame.

After a bit of reading, ED Exploration Buddy may well be what I'm looking for.

Tomorrow, I'll download it and it and put it through its paces :D

One thing I want to do on top of this is looking at adding some Windows TTS voices which can be used in EDEB.

Not an EVE Online fan then? ;)
I’d long eyed EVE with interest, the exciting visuals of ships, space stations and epic battles having grabbed my attention - though noted that the game itself seemed to mostly consist of maps & spreadsheets, with those epic battles being more like old Warcraft than “Star Wars” in terms of gameplay?

…then one day some years ago i came across the Ars Technica review of Elite Dangerous - i’ve still not gotten around to actually installing EVE :]

That's exactly what I've done, no social discourse or communication, straight into the bin ! :D
There's no doubt about it, when players behave in a reasonable way in open I've always had a positive experience.

Ok, as to the topic question, What am I doing now....🤔...Well, I've just sold most of my mined materials and metals, I've also been topping up my materials and data in readiness for any engineering modules I'll maybe need in the future (I'd used some up for some of the Mandalay's modules). Incidentally, I haven't done any collecting of mats for ages, so I had to scratch my head a bit to remember where to get some of the rarer ones. I was in a system the other day (in the course of doing a trading mission) and got interdicted by a few Anacondas, after destroying them it suddenly occurred to me it would be as good a time as any to collect some materials from the battle. I could only see a couple of materials floating in the area which puzzled me...until I realised I'd chosen to ignore a fair few mats in the contacts menu, and hadn't re-set them, (from way back) Anyway, once I'd set it to 'not ignore' it was like a snow storm on my scanner!....there were (I counted them) 40 imperial shielding showing at one point, I only needed about 5 of those to top up my materials count to 100 so the rest went to waste. It was roughly the same for some other stuff I collected later on. I seem to remember seeing some time ago that Frontier had upped the number of materials etc. but hadn't needed any then so I'd forgotten about it.

I'm playing the game at the moment, but I'm also waiting for the DPD driver to knock at the door this morning to deliver some stuff to complete my other computer build I've been slowly doing over the last few months. Some 32GB of Corsair ram, a copy of windows 11 Home and a Thermal Grizzly Kryo Graphene Thermal Pad for the cpu. The pad is a bit of a luxury, but I thought I'd try it out as although I've used the paste a few times I'm always bothered I've used to much or too little, so this should be easier to apply....hopefully. :D
So all being well I should have an AMD / Ryzen based computer up and running by the end of next week!....🙏

On another point, am I right in thinking we've got another Frontier Unlocked Livestream this evening (27/11/2024) at roughly 6pm?

Jack :)

Right, I've given this a spin and it's actually a pretty good alternative to Observatory. There are a couple of things to get used to (naturally).

  • Firstly, it doesn't use the natural voices that Observatory did - for the reasons the dev had explained. It seems that it uses the Windows desktop TTS functionality if you want audio announcements. That, therefore, restricts the accents/languages you have installed with Windows. However, there are voices you can download ( settings --> time and language --> speech --> manage voices then add voices (Windows 11)). EDIT: Once a new voice is added, you'll need to reboot.
  • Secondly, the exploration audio announcements are quite verbose; it will state each "feature" of a newly discovered planet and all possible flora variants on a planet with life. This can be a bit much but it may either be a) my unfamiliarity with the tool or b) just getting used to it.
  • Lastly, and this was the most important factor for me, was the vocal prompt for flora colonial diversity distances. It does do this but it states you are "leaving the colony" rather than "you have travelled xxx metres".

I'm still working my way through what it can and can't do but, so far, yeah... cool bananas.

Oh, also... where Observatory listed each possible flora on a planet in tabular form, you need to mouseover the relevant icon in the "bodies" tab in EDEB.

Yes, please keep us posted on that, I use Observatory every time I explore. I should go by his website and make a donation.

...on the subject of friend requests, nice enough though it may seem to receive them from strangers, considering the apparent use of them to stalk potential victims in-game - would anyone here be inclined to accept this one... and why? ;p

I'm not a big fan of "drive-by" invites to anything. Reminds me bring invited to an mmorpg guild without first having a "chat".

But then, I'm a suspicious, sceptical cynic by nature :D
