Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Do you think it's a hardware or software problem? I don't recall which ones you have but I'm a newb beyond magnet modding my X-52.
It'll ne hardware. alas.

It's one of these and I'm hoping a spanking new one arrives tomorrow.

I'm just wondering about binds now. It's a USB connection and a like-for-like model. I'm hoping the game will just detect it as an existing peripheral and keep its current bindings.

So as for what I'm up, space combat ain't it :D

Doing a few ground missions to bide my time.

I'm colonising. I was finding the Corsair a way better "Loader" than the Cutter. The better thrusters meant I was having way more fun "pancake flipping onto the landing pads" and almost delivering as quickly, (yes twice as many journeys) but, as sad as I am to admit it... I've switched to using the Supercruise assist and Auto Docking Computer for the first time ever (since 1984), and I still have 60 loads of steel and titanium to deliver. Riveting this gameplay.

As soon as this initial outpost is done (and the clock stops) I think I'm going to switch to building a pirate outpost from purloined items only ;-)

Hi :)

Great Video! (y)
I haven't a clue how you people compile these videos, I wouldn't know where to start. 🫡

Jack :)
Hey Jack,

the first step would be recording some footage.
You don't need any fancy software for this, windows has a capable screen capturing mode on board. You can access it by pressing the Windows button and G.
The next step is editing these clips you have shot in game.
And even there, Windows has a tool for the task, MS Clipchamp. It is quite easy to learn, perfect for your first steps.
Once you like what you see, you can post it on YT.

Many thanks for the kind words - I take a lot of screenshots as I play (80,000+ to date, though many are just “log” images, capturing info on where & what i’m up to in the game - else i tend to forget a lot^), quite a few on external camera for more scenic stuff, also doing specific shoots and recording video when I find things of particular interest - so sifting & sorting through the couple of TB of recorded video i have on archive was the main challenge in making this video! :)

I record with OBS, for both first person and external camera - I find it gives good quality recordings at a reasonable data rate, also keeping up with encoding while the game is running on the same relatively modest 6-core PC system.

Editing & post is on my trusty MacBook - I use QuickTimePlayer for selecting/cutting down and doing simple edits, before importing and doing more intensive editing/compositing/grading work in Final Cut Pro, rendering & exporting for upload. Additionally I use Motion for motion graphics & more complex visual effects work.

I finished watching all 5 seasons of Babylon 5 and now I'm watching Halo season 1, they really need to continue this series. I think it's a great show.

I've learned to keep some sort of a backup around, I just can't bring myself to use a keyboard and mouse.
Nice. A B5 rewatch is still on my list.
Hi :)

Yep, that's what I eventually did. I'd had a Thrstmaster T16000m for quite a few years and I'd 'repaired' it twice by taking it apart and cleaning it after the main axis movements started to get 'flaky'. The main fire trigger started playing up eventually, intermittent trigger failure, I took the joystick apart again but the trigger works on a sealed 'pot' that can't be cleaned, at least I couldn't do it.
I messaged Thrustmaster about it but they don't supply those particular spare parts (or any parts actually when the joysticks warranty runs out).😒

Still for the price at the time it was good value (£38). I bit the bullet and bought the modern DUO version, though apart from external cosmetics the sticks are basically the same as when they were first released.
So...Just under a couple of years ago (I think) I bought the DUO version in a sale that came up, I paid roughly £84 for the two and free postage came with it so it was a saving compared to buying two separate sticks which was just over £120 for the two and postage on top of that. The price has risen again slightly this year.
I've still got one stick still new in the box as a 'spare', I'm using the other one, and it's still accurate in it's functions after hundreds of hours play so far.

I still use a keyboard for mostly the planet scanning stuff and other one key press functions, the mouse I use fires the bio scanner, and I use it for on foot movement as well as bringing up the system and galactic maps plus pointy and click stuff. The joystick is mainly used for the main ship movement, speed and weapons controls. I use all three control peripherals as it's my belief that it evens out any ware and tare generally. For example, when firing the mining weapons I use the right mouse button, the mouse in this respect takes a hammering, but it takes the place of the joystick fire button, so less use of that joy's main fire trigger.

Though you can find it a bit cheaper on Amazon uk. maybe around £10 cheaper when I last looked.

Jack :)
Interesting. I've sometimes wondered about the dual stick approach.

I've tried an Xbox controller for the Scarab with mixed results, but I'd definitely go with mouse and keyboard for FPS. I'm not some kind of barbarian Philistine.
I’ve been fairly quiet here & elsewhere the past week or two, busy making another video for a JustAbout competition - the idea being to make quite a splash on YouTube this week, with a collection of player-made video’s on the theme “This is my Elite Dangerous” …so here it is, a montage of things i’ve played & recorded the past years :]

The competition is open for entries until the 21st, so there’s still some time to enter…

I actually thought you used dual sticks too. Maybe I'm thinking of another person's setup pic. Interesting joystick. I feel like it's slightly lacking in button options though without a throttle.

But as aRJay also mentioned, I've tried several X-52's and the keybinds were unnaffected. There's no reason why they should be really. Not to my knowledge.

That's probably closer to the edge than other player systems I've seen on here but I see there's a few named systems around.I may head up to that area while looking for places to surface mine. Away from any bubble riff raff who may take a shot at me.
Yeah, every time I've seen someone on the "there's no systems left wahhhh" vibe I've looked where they are and they are closer than I am. As for named systems the Hipparcos catalogue goes beyond 200 parsecs so in theory any bright stars even more than 600ly out should have name...

I've only found this once before, Frutexa Sponsae.

I only just now saw what stick you were using.
I've found Logitech having a rather good spare parts support. I had a Logitech headset for more than a decade and when the battaery was getting weak, I was still able to obtain a new one via their website. It was just the microphone arm breaking a few years later that I was forced to retire the headset, as they had run out of stock for those microphones. But that took almost 15 years to happen.

Well, I sure hope Tyres's new joystick arrives today! 🙏
I've just been looking in on the Logitech site UK just to see what peripherals they make nowadays, I'd love a set of their Z906 5.1 surround sound speakers, but at £400....I I keep looking in on their site and the PC hardware retailers / stockists periodically here in the UK, just in case there's a sale on somewhere with these speakers....😣...no such luck at the moment! :D

What am I doing....I've just landed my Cutter at Herbert Dock (Wolf 906) to sell off 300t of Platinum, then moving on to somewhere else so I can sell off other stuff I've mined.
I'm also keeping my eye out for any new information from Frontier concerning this colonisation feature, as it seems to me to be all a bit quiet and in limbo presently. 🧐
On my way in to the bubble I landed at a players ongoing system colonisation build and cleared out some remaining commodities I had, and sold them off at the colonisation carrier....I wonder if that player notices!
Dammit!....I've been to three different best buy / sell stations indicated on Inara now as having the best prices for platinum, all three of them indicated prices in excess of 280,000, but at each station they were all around the 270,700 mark when I landed there.....grrrrr. :D

As I've mentioned somewhere here, I've got two Titan Drive components stored on my carrier, so I might also visit the engineers for a couple of suitable drives to fit a Cobra Mk5 and the Corsair, ready to fit for when I eventually buy them.

Edited... for grammar....and a typo.

Jack :)

Amazon delivery. A time slot has been given but it's anyone's guess :D

Won't be able to Christan it until tomorrow, alas.

Must admit i lusted after admired this system for years (it has SPDIF which i needed to get 5.1 out of a G5 and then later, Mac Pro), despite the rather steep price-tag - until i realised that it will only play one input at a time... so my heart is set on a G560, which can play line-in/USB & BT concurrently... if they ever come back into stock here... and my wallet is feeling rrreally healthy at the time ;p

My last two Amazon deliveries, last Monday, were 1 hour and 7 hours before their arriving before time. Both surprised me by arriving in ordinary cars.
Self employed wanna be white van men, from what I have heard some of them can't speak our lingo:)

I have driven for several parcel companies on the inter depot (HGV) side of things and the home delivery side you do not want to know about:)

I have used a Z906 surround system on my pc for years, the audio is amazing. Unfortunately I think something weird is going on with my MOBO audio as windeys (and the mobo's sound app) only seem to want to use the left and right channels. This is really weird 'cos I can play a BluRay and get full surround sound (THX, DTS Master Audio, etc) via those same jack-plug type connectors. Presumably the Cyberlink BluRay player app on the PC bypasses something in the MOBO's audio driver.

The Z906 works fine using the optical connection from the PC but I don't think the optical output carries proper surround channels from Elite. I do have memories of other games in the past giving surround-sound via the audio connectors.

I also have the second TOS-link input connected via an Amazon Fire 4K thingie - that works great too.

I am going to try using a Soundblaster X4 to check that the audio input channels are all working properly on the Z906.

BTW - I see the Z906 is now over twice the amount I paid for it 8 years ago, £400 is a lot of moolah so I hope it is a MOBO issue and not the Z906 failing. It is amazing that there are not more 5.1 (or 7.1) speaker systems tailored for PCs - leastways I don't think there are.

Also - that G560 thing is a virtual surround thing (2.1) isn't it?
