Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

9329.54 ly from the nearest station and 4% hull. Regardlss of whether or not i make it back, next time i'm gonna bucky out here, and take the slow way onwards.
Evrything else is in the green, but i'd rather not lose the data i've collected so far.Think i'm going to have to trade the srv for HRP.There's quite a lot of neutron stars, which would increase the risk, but on my way back out they could prove useful. For now it's 207 jumps.Does anyone know if you can deploy the scarab from space?Don't really want to risk anymore surface landing if i can avoid it,and i might scrape out enough for a half light or so over the course of the journey. That .54ly worries me.:D

Would HRP be of any use? Maybe a repair limpet controller would be better bet as you can use them on your own hull can't you? (yes you can). From the Wiki:

"The Repair Limpet Controller is a Limpet Controller used to repair the hulls of damaged ships. A single Repair Limpet restores only a portion of hull value, and multiple Limpets may be required to fully repair a ship. Repair Limpets do not affect modules, which can be repaired with an Auto Field-Maintenance Unit, though they can repair a damaged (but not a fully-broken) Ship Canopy. If deployed without an active target, the limpet will attempt to repair its mothership instead."

In any case, just call up the Fleet Mechanics / Hull Seals and they will come across and patch you up. (Like the Fuel Rats but with different limpets.)

O.K.Back to the glossary:)
I've seen it about a lot and always assumed it equated to hull repair package.I now see the error of my ways.

You could ask somebody to meet up with you and repair you.
Also, HRPs are a stupid idea for an explorer. ;) They're heavy. If you crash into the ground a lot, simply bring better shields. And if it's heat that did most damage to your hull, well, HRPs are useless against that, anyway, because IIRC the heat damage is percentage based. Having more hitpoints would simply mean each damage "tick" takes off bigger chunk, but overall you die just as quickly.

edit: Ah, sorry. If that's what you thought it meant, then okay. We learn every day.
Like Para says, bring AFMU and repair limpet controller. You only need a couple of limpets and if the damage is critical, you can always craft more.

My alt is out by Colonia and I'm on PS4.

Lmk if no one else willing to fly out is closer.

Thanks for the offer.Alas i am currently confined to solo,so i'm going to have to tough it out.I appreciate it,though.
Hull Rats info was interesting,too.

Ah yes of course the curse of the console. So it is a case of nobody going to be able to repair you if you don't pay the extortion fee online sub to your manufacturer.

Good luck. [up]

Hmm... in between curiousness on combat ranking and making money, my thoughts are also turning towards that Anaconda purchase. Nearly 400m in the coffers but I'm still sitting on that fence (story of my life). I think it is really going to boil down to "do I really want one?". To Anaconda, or not to Anaconda; that is the question. I might get a couple of Fed ships instead.

Fascinating game, this - there's always something to do! I haven't played that many games that have this factor.

3600 hours on PS4, good headway on the PC.
And I STILL don't feel I've touched half of the things I want to do.

No regrets about starting from scratch on the PC, enjoying all the unlocks, things I've forgotten, things have changed.

I do miss the exploraconda I built on PS4, but I'll get another one, Tijuana Taxi III. And a Corvette. And an Asp Scout. And a several Rescue T9s. And... Lol.:D

Yes it is fascinating.

Of course you should try the Anaconda, but not with only 400,000,000 available, it is a wonderful ship in many ways but has some exceedingly annoying issues.
However there is no ship that looks the part so well when you limp back to dock after a battle or crash with sparks everywhere and fires glowing visibly through the mangled hull.
Plus if you can live with the tanker like view and supercruise handling it is great for long jump travel.

Well, that was a white knuckle ride but i managed to land safely. What a ride it was though.
I lost a further 2% hull whilst testing the offesive capabilities of a mollusc, and another to a neutron star exclusion zone,so i was literally at 1% for the second half of the journey back.It was well worth it though.Best of all,the data was enough to get me to explorer elite.
I'm going to have to learn to ride the neutron stars now, there's too many of them not to take advantage of,and they will shorten the trip considerably,so i've heard.

Neutron stars are easy. Turn away from the star and aim for the very end of the jet cone. Approach it slowly with about 20% throttle, enter and once you're supercharged, simply accelerate out of it.

Stay away from White Dwarves, though. Their cones are too short and if you're unlucky and the bucking currents will spin your ship around towards the star, you will be immediately thrown into the exclusion zone and you WON'T get out. Not worth it for the small range boost.
Neutron stars, though, totally safe.

Thanks.
With regard to neutrons,do you have to select a target when you're in the cone? And what % increase in range does it give?

Yesterday I decided to test an old hypothesis I had, being that it takes a certain lack of moral to become rich. Therefore I bought a Type 7 and went to transport some slaves. Bad idea. Even though this is "just a game" I simply couldn't make myself do it. (The low payout on the missions also might have played a role...)

Instead I build an ASPX for core mining, using a Coriolis setup with a few personal tweaks, and started practicing. After a couple of trips I managed to come back to the station with a not-empty cargo! Yes Sir! On the first trip, I only brought the limpet controlers, and no limpets. Doh! It took me a while to figure out that restock and advanced maintenance are not the same. For those CMDRs who has lived in the Elite universe since the dawn of time, that might be obvious, but I thought learning astronomy software like PixInsight and Maxim had a steep learning curve! Maybe not. There is quite a lot of implicit stuff you just need to know in ED.

Well that also makes this game so challenging, and now I'm off to see if I can fill up my cargo with opals and diamonds. Way better payout, and much less ethically problematic than transporting slaves. I even brought a nice big laser for some of the annoying pirates. Blast time!

I had intended on taking my Adder out on an exploration trip.

But I got a little distracted...

See, it turns out some of the NPCs are carrying very valuable diamonds, and well, I couldn't resist! Every stolen diamond sold is another rebuy in my bank, and then some! I have also developed a taste for rum. So maybe I will put that expedition off for a little longer...!

Thanks.

Definitely not whilst you are in the jet:

You can select the destination before charging (in fact the Nav computer does that if you are using NS jets in your routing) but you need not, although you might want to if you are using the neutron jump planner (in which case remember to SELECT not plot route). You can just charge - move out of the cone - open galaxy map and see all those long blue lines. ;)

Having returned from setting up my new business venture in Robigo (see sig), I have decided to give the new fangled core Mining a go.

Hardpoints. Yep.
Internals. yep.
Scanners. Yep.
Limpets...Yeh, had to go back for the limpets.

Very good, all seems straightforward. I'm just terrible at spotting core asteroids.
So it's out of the bubble for me, we shall see if I fare any better in fresh systems.:D

@Para Handy

That GIF is spot on! [up]

At least it shows your state of mind the first time you enter one of the jets. One of the first things I stumbled upon by accident in ED was a neutron star. Those have always fascinated me, and the one I found had really turbulent jets. I had no idea about fuel scooping, but it came natural to me just to try and fly into one of the jets, just to see what happens when you do that. In real life that would lead to almost instant death, and surprise-surprise: In ED I was alive for a few seconds, and then heard Verity panicking shortly before everything went black. It was great fun while it lasted though!

Since then I've tried to use NS jets without any problems, except for the wear and tear on the FSD. NS jets should have a big sign saying "Enter here!", but on the other hand space doesn't leave much room for planting such a sign. Again, ED is quite realistic in many aspects.

Speaking of fuel scooping, this was a pretty good system. You could almost cut a block out of the corona between the two stars:

Stunning image!

Oh, and speaking of WD scooping ... a) yes I know it's not really worth it, b) yes I know it's deadly, c) I don't seem to be able to help myself.
