Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I’ve been back in the bubble for the last week I should be able to pick up some Prismatics tonight. Think I’ll fit the largest I can to a spare Krait I now have, strip the rest back, fly it to Colonia and fit them to my Python.

I have 2 choices on my return. Build up my combat (currently 31% Master) or just head off into the black.

I guess I’ll combat for a short while, taking a slow trip back to Colonia will satisfy my solitude thirst.

I might even buy some ARX tonight, just to upset the ‘ARX is the devil’ mob.

Im thinking of doing some long distance passenger work, a bit of space tourism.
It will make a change from ferrying criminal 'masterminds' around Robigo (a fool and his money).
Looks like I'll be using up some of my materials wealth on the Beluga. Better seek some advice on that.

I'm wondering if my joystick is hindering my combat. I seem to "overshoot" my aim and it doesn t quite stop panning when I centre the control.

Fixed weapons are impossible.

It's probably me being a complete chump so I might try keyboard/KB&M and see.
What's the stick?

Not all sticks are created equal, and even then a little bit of tweaking can make all the difference.

My boiler blew up this morning. I've had to cancel my VirPil order to help pay for it. :(

How do you fly with so few buttons? :D

Anyway, you might find it worthwhile to set up some response curves to dampen inputs towards the centre of the axes. That will make your ship less twitchy in combat and open up fixed weapons somewhat.

The simplest program is Joystick Curves. You will need to install vJoy first for it to work. Make sure you put the virtual axis into test mode to map them in-game. If you don't, and just move the stick, the game client will just map the stick. That confused me for ages.

An alternative is Joystick Gremlin. It too relies on vJoy, but is much more powerful, and more complex as a result.

I like a nice parabolic curve; others like an S-curve.

Ah - if you can take donated goods from outside, there is some stuff that sells much higher than P/P/P. Assuming you can sell VOs or LTDs, one or two tons would do the job - worst sales price for VOs is ~180 k per ton, LTDs sell for at least 280 k per ton.
If you do this, you would need to sell it inside but not get a rank, and then go back outside and buy the module though? I guess for me I can easily ignore trying to map the start area, though I will honk all the systems before I leave.

As far as I understood it (which is probably wrong):
  • don't have any rank
  • meet with a CMDR outside and acquire the goods
  • take the goods back inside and sell them. You will gain the trade rank, but as long as you don't dock outside, that won't matter
  • buy the DSS inside and use it

That assumes that you actually can buy the DSS inside, which I have actually no idea about. I can't see a way to buy the DSS outside and return inside - once you have the money to buy the DSS, you have a trade rank which will prevent your return to the inside. Unless, and here I am very unclear, the condition is that you have to dock again after you obtained the rank, i.e. if you are docked while gainig the rank on the outside, the lock only closes when you dock the next time after that.

Testing that might be very tedious, at least for the "newbie" pilot, as you will have to clear save after each failed attempt.

You can't buy a DSS in the noob-zone stations which is why I speculated that (perhaps) you could scoop donated cannisters, dock at a station outside the zone that sells the DSS - sell the goods, buy the DSS and head back to the zone. Since you get promoted for selling that much commodity value then you would have been promoted BUT - the question is since you have not "docked after being promoted" maybe you have not yet lost the permit.

As I say, convoluted and not worth bothering about but I might test it out on my next clear-save. o_O

I decided to give double-painite-hotspot mining a try. I enjoy the deep core stuff, but I wanted to do something new(ish).

So I refit my old multi-role Anaconda, doing as little as possible to convert it for mining. I don't use the ship much any more, so it needs a new purpose anyway. I took off a couple weapons and replaced them with mining lasers. I took out the SRV rack and Fighter Bay and such like stuff and put in cargo racks and limpet controllers. And a refinery. And off I went.

I was reminded once again of what a useful vessel the Anaconda is. It can be easily configured for any task, and will do the task well.

The first place I tried had a small overlapping area, but it didn't seem to produce the desired results. I found almost no painite there. So I tried another location and this one worked out better. Not every asteroid had painite, but the majority did. I goofed around for an hour or so before I got disconnected (Mauve Adder error...lol...these error names are so silly). When I logged back in I decided to call it a day anyway, and headed off to sell. One pirate attempted to interdict me (sent me a message), but he never actually caught up with me.

I made over 50 million, even being as lax and inefficient as I was.

I found the process less interesting and less fun than core mining, but easier to do. It's probably less variable, too. It requires very little brain power, so it's good for a bit of relaxing while making some credits.

I shall do more of it, I think, in preparation for Carriers, and for anytime I don't want to think too hard :)

It's quite fun to fly into the middle of a heated battle at a CNB, and without engaging anyone just target lock one of the ships and then try to stay behind it. It's good practice of your flying, and you can enjoy the view of all the eye candy without being blown to pieces. (Don't bring any cargo!)

Grinding Imperial Navy ranks. Then moving on to the joy that will be grinding Federal Navy ranks. :cautious:
I found a trick recently for grinding fed rank. Find a station with feds that is being repaired. In the mission board you'll find a lot of similar "go fetch" mission, where they need some sort of commodities. Typically to or three different ones. Then take your largest ship and go buy those commodities. Next go to the repair station and take the missions. Instead of having to "go fetch" you can now sit there handing in the commodities they want, getting rep. The missions run dry, so go to another (fed infested) repair station when one runs dry. Going back and forth between a couple of stations that way, will quickly get you your rank.

Love a bit of rep grind ;)
But seriously, I'm going to try for a cutter when I get back to the bubble, any tips for grinding imperial rank? I am currently going on a round trip from colonia to sag A to the bubble if it helps.

It's been a while since I tried it, but if Mainani and Ngalinn are in boom states, then doing data missions between those two systems was a relatively easy imp grind. That was how I got my Cutter, but I must admit, with the risk of being literally killed, that the Cutter was one of my only disappointments in the game. Big white plastic thing that handles like a Conda with weak thrusters ;)

I've not even bothered with the Cutter on my PC account.
It has its uses, I just don't like the flight model much. 🤷‍♂️

It's kind of like one of those toys you saw as a kid in the toy store, and for a while all you could think about before going to sleep was that without that toy life would be meaningless. When you had finally begged enough to get it, it was dull and broke easily, so you quickly went back to your trusty Lego. Only difference being that the Cutter doesn't break because of the big blue bubble surrounding it, making it even more dull. ✈

Toying with the idea of swapping my 'Conda's (large, oversized, overcharegd) gimballed MC's for turreted ones with similar engineering... Looks like the DPS drops off significantly but my aim is so crap, it may help. Good or bad idea, do you think?
