Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

What am I up to? I am returning to the game after a few months away in the Old West. Still love RDR, will always play it, but also still love ED, will also always play it, so will try to juggle the two.

Logged back into ED earlier, realised that I was in a Beluga, so had my Orca shipped to the station at which I was docked, sold the Beluga and a few other ships. Now I am in the Orca with 100m cr in the bank, with various top level, engineered modules stored. Had the idea to buy an Anaconda (and see what all the fuss is about), but obviously am almost 50m short. So it is either run some passenger missions to make up the difference or buy a Python (also never flown one, see it as Anaconda-lite). I basically want a multirole ship which is good in a fight. Will likely do the passenger runs in the Orca (it boosts to 550, no idea whether that's good but it feels fast to me), love the ship, until I can afford the Anaconda (it'll be quicker than learning mining, and I'm impatient for the new ship). Thing is, I'm struggling with the basics, suddenly - the display looks very difference, I am being offered 'ARX', I think it was, and don't know what that is, and apparently some of my key bindings are now duplicated. So all in all I have a lot to learn, and some ro relearn. But I am glad to be back.

I look forward to rejoining this friendliest of threads.

Welcome back!

The Python is my go to ship for cargo mission hauling. It has 280 tonnes of space and, in a system where I am allied, it makes great money. For instance, during my Empire grind, it was common to get 10mCR from one short haul and 13mCR on a return.

As for ARX, they are sort of in-game earned currency that enables you to buy ship colours, kits etc. It replaces paying cash directly for such stuff but you can buy ARX for real life money also.

...sold the Beluga...

Don't let that Rick guy hear you say that!

Thing is, I'm struggling with the basics, suddenly -

Yeah, a lot of the default keybindings and available controls have been modified whilst we where out of it, so there's a certain amount of re-training to go through.

I am being offered 'ARX', I think it was, and don't know what that is...

That's just the new 'cash money store currency' - you buy it (or acquire a nominal amount each week through arbitrary awards for in game activity) to buy stuff in the web shop (paints schemes, ship kits, what have you) with instead of paying cash - to basically unify FDevs transaction arrangements across all platforms (as I understand it, console jockeys are pretty much required to go through some virtual currency exhange).

From the forum responses to ARX you'd think FDev went round to everyones house and personally kicked their dog, so, you know, business as usual there o_O

Welcome back, fly safe. Or dangerous. Y'know, its in the name n'all

@Simon Templar , a very warm welcome back, sir! I hope the usual furniture rearranging that happens once in a while at Frontier’s whim doesn’t inconvenience your return too much.

May I put in a word for the Krait MkII as a possible alternative to the Python? I have both, and I must admit I tend to use the Python more for trade missions than the Krait, but the Krait has a much more entertaining flight model, and is a fierce combatant when fitted accordingly. It can also carry a fighter bay!

Welcome back.I hope your are rested,by the sounds of it you are keen for the fray.In your position i would have chosen the python simply for landing pad accessability, although if you love the orca, theres no need, really.

Whatever you choose, have fun flying it, and don't get too bogged down in arx, basicaly game currency for use in the cosmetics store.
I just got beaten up and spat out by a black hole, then spent 40 minutes repairing the ship and changing underwear.
I plerked 1 arx for exploration, and 8 arx for the repairs.(it said other, but that's all i did).Once the store launches tailored accessories for the mannequin, i might be able to afford a new breechclout.

I think HoloMe not stocking underwear is a big oversight

Nice detailing.

Not enough time tonight to make a significant contribution to either my 'main' exploration effort or my 'alt' Colonia adventure, so just a quick side trek on the latter this evening - quick 10 jump 'bounce' up from Hillary Depot to visit a couple of systems I discovered back in the day, to get them surface mapped as well.

Managed to snag a fresh two body system on the way, too.

Netted a couple more million creds (inc bonuses), and also found a couple of Gas Giant moons (happily, right next door to each other) with geological features - Water Geysers and Methane Lava, iirc.

Never seen either before, so next play-time looks set to be a return to buzz around those in my fighter and SRV

Ooh, those are good numbers. Thing is - and I get that this appears shallow - I have never particularly warmed to the look of the Python. I do need to sample it at some point, though. My Orca is such a cash machine - I pulled 30m last night, running some passenger missions and exploring in the margins - that I want something which is a big step up. I can defend myself in the Orca, but not against the big boys (my engineering favours the engines, so I can depart at a fair pace when needed) so I'm thinking that maybe the Anaconda is more of a step up which could prise me from the Orca? Thing is, I want to explore in it as well as straight trading, and have heard that the view out of the Anaconda is disappointing. So will likely just save, buy, and think about it.

Thank you for the ARX explanation. Lots to learn! I apparently have a balance of 5000 ARX off the bat, so can afford to play around with it I guess. Probably on making an Anaconda look snazzy.

Thank you, and lol at the dog kicking. People do love a moan! I did almost adore the Beluga - felt like flying the USS Enterprise, really did - and in ways I miss it, it was a sort of frigate meet deep space science vessel - but it was just a little too unwieldly a little too often for me. When I'm more solvent I'll likely pick up another.

Thank you very much, delighted to be here! Krait MkII is a good idea, thank you - I briefly had one when they came out, but never got it finished and swapped it out for something else, so it is a love with unfinished business. I have various class 6/7/8 modules all fully engineered in storage, took an age but does mean that once I buy a chassis I can pretty much get it finished immediately, which is a first for me. Realised last night that just one stored PP is over 50m cr! And various 2m weapons. So with now 130m cr in cash I could go to the Krait and then Anaconda. Although I fear what will happen is that I will buy the Anaconda, hate the view, sell it and buy something else. But Krait is still a good entry on that list. Thank you. And I do love a fighter bay, preferably with a pilot who reminds me of Brienne of Tarth.

Thank you! Confess I don't understand a word of your last sentence, but the rest is very helpful, thank you. Black holes can be a shock, my first experience was the one down by Maia. Nearly got me. My own 'that's no moon...' moment.

I do love the Orca, for the next one up I'd like it to feel a real step up, and pack a punch. I am keen for the fray - have never been out to Colonia so fancy something which can handle a range of roles so I don't get halfway and think 'I brought the wrong ship!'. Krait v Anaconda, currently.

While you're all here, did those fleet carriers ever turn up? Were they billions? Did any of you get one?

In the recent beta we were testing the new NPC fighter pilot game mechanic which allows us to recover the pilot at the rebuy screen, the mechanism works fine but a lot of salt was shed over whether the cost was too low or too high or should the mechanism even exist.

The view from the Kraits is superb and they feel very agile, the view from the Anaconda is dominated by the hull stretching in front of you and it doesn’t feel as agile.

Simon, the Orca is great to fly and make a good void opal miner. It's both quick and agile despite its size, something which you want in a core mining vessel. With 96-128T cargo one load of opals are 150-200 million, so if you want to quickly try out an Anaconda, I can recommend outfitting the orca for core mining. It doesn't take that long to learn the basics, and I find it both fun and enjoyable.

Double painite mining is simpler and pay more, so some people will say core mining is pointless. But as this is a game I want to have fun during it also :)

Okay that's a good shout - just have never tried mining at all (still have a mothballed Keelback waiting for my mining initiation) but if the Orca has the chops might try that, thank you. The economy has moved on apace in my absence!

The Orca is what I prefer to use for core mining. Have tried Kraits and Python but don't like them (too slow and not enough agility). Looking at a ~20 min guide should be enough to know what to do. It'll take you longer out in the field to get to know the "right" asteroids but I find that fun.

You need:
Detailed surface scanner
Prospector limpet controller (A rated, size 1 is enough)
Refinery (As small as possible for core mining)
Collector Limpets Controller (A or B rated, 2-4 total is enough)
Pulse Wave Analyser (A rated)
Seismic charge launcher (Medium hardpoint)
Abrasion blaster (fixed small hardpoint)
LIMPETS! (Fill up your cargo in advanced maintenance - I usually go 3/4 full and eject when I need more room)

Rest cargo, though recommend to still use a shield. Fuel scoop is optional but can be useful or required depending on where you mine.

Here is what I plan to try next time: https://s.orbis.zone/574i
Using 6 Limpets instead of 3, will see if I prefer that to the extra 32 cargo.

Also
Seismic Charge Launcher medium hard point required
Abrasion Blaster fixed mount

I have two mining ships Rockhammer is my original ship an Orca configured for surface mining but now being tweaked to do emissions and rescue work at USSs I also have Abdial my Python which is setup for all forms of mining.

Welcome back :) What is it about RDR you love so much? I played it for a bit, got maybe halfway through the story, and lost interest. Maybe I'm missing something!
