Well,it happened!
I switched to econ mode and set off for the BH about 40 jumps away, still picking up sector FD's. 3 jumps in i found my first water world, a couple later my first ELW.The next system over had geo's with another bonus, so things were looking good.Best of all it had standard earth gravity,on the nose.
The terrain was a little bumpy, and it took a while to find a landing zone, but i finally disembarked, conscious of that reassuring drag of 'normality', only staying long enough to scan and collect a couple of samples and admire the view, before heading back to the ship.
Taking off at a shallow angle,i went looking for more suitable ground, and spotted a crater not far away with a distinctive mound at it's centre which didn't appear too steep. So i landed atop the almost flat surface and started down in the scarab.
The incline was at first gentle, the gradient gradually becoming steeper.
Even freewheeling, soon we were bouncing down the mountain at a fast jog.The terrain was beginning to be broken up by small hillocks like waves, and then the first unexpected mogul, lip curling up, and it's only when we are airborne and the flyving starts that i remember that its a steep learning curve and i went over the edge at 1G.
All pips to engines ,desperately fighting for control of the helm, boost and slam, time it just right,c'mon recharge, dammit, slam.
Still just about got it,but the hang time is stetching boost recharge, and then i see the cliff edge approaching and i know this one is going to hurt, but it's still do-able.
We're over and free falling, boosting away from the rock face as hard as we can, trying to stay level with the incline, pick your spot and ..slam
Whoops, hull 50% and we're tumbling, the sky and mountain rotating.
A lucky bounce and gentle thrust correction, and we make contact again.
25% hull .Sky mountain plain wrestle each other ,still fighting for control, the level terrain of the crater now tantalisingly close. One more bounce and i think i can make it.
The mountain claims its prize.
